You have the model and instruction sheets, use that stuff as a pattern and guide to scratch build that sub. When you get done, you can say I built it all and invested about a year into the build with little expense. Piet could probably provide some guidance if asked.

Mike, you are going to have some rounding when you bend anything. Even the excellent work that John showed above the corners are rounded. As you suggested you could pound the corners square, but that would tend to cut the inside corner through unless you were extremely careful. You could also make it larger and file the excess material off to give a more square look. Lastly the only real square way would be to butt and solder two flat surfaces together at 90 degrees. If you solder from the inside of the corner, you could get a square outside.

I find that the plank tends to ride up at the back when I am cutting thin planks for hull planking. It can be avoided but I decided to make sure by adding a device to hold down the back of the plank. It adjusts easily for height and horizontal position.

Well...I am humbled by the level of skill and detail that this boards members exhibit in their work.  It makes me want to not post my work on my first plastic boat model!  I mean, seriously - some of you are true artisans...but I figure we all start somewhere!  Besides, I really enjoy doing something creative...and the more mistakes I make, the more I will learn.

So, with my learning helmet on (I am very new to model building - very very new) I am going to jump slowly into my 1:196 scale USS Constitution project.  I have just enough space for this, plus, it will help me learn about old boats as I progress.

With that - here is my Day 1 learnings on the 1:196 scale USS Constitution ('my baby Conny')

    - The ship hull seemed much smaller than I had assumed once I have it out of the box
    - Some of the cannon had snapped off the sprue and were floating around
    - It is obviously a pretty old mold, but after I filed down some of the more obvious sprue burrs, I dry fit the hull halves and main deck without too much difficulty
    - No broken or cracked pieces (yet) - all seems in tact.
    - As this is a plastic model, and I am still new to painting/detailing (I have a mix of both enamels/Acrylics), I want to maximize my ability to get the best detailing I can without killing myself
    - Plan to put on primer today (Hull - flat black; Deck - flat gray)

Its not every day on the internet that you see the CEO of a company step in personally and address the complaint of one of the companies customers! And even on the rare occasion we see this happen, seldom do you hear more than some platitudes and vague generalities.
Its refreshing to see this kind of response, an actual precise explanation from a person that could have very easily pretended not to know about a problem.
Model Expo has been an important part of this hobby and I wonder how many of us would be making models today if the company had not been there over the years offering tools and kits? I wish all hobby companies were as attentive to their customers.

Since the buck stops on my desk I want to answer the question.

Constitution is a daunting kit to manufacture. It has a myriad of parts. Yes, we make most of it .... meaning we laser cut the wood and cast many of the casting in house. We do all of the final assembly. But the problem lies in making sure that every part is accounted for and is available for assembly when needed. Right now we are waiting on 5 mm (3/16") Walnut deadeyes sourced in Italy. Our last shipment did not contain them. Our supplier ran out. They will be available next week and we'll be making another 25 Constitutions, which are not enough as demand for Constitution continually surprises us. We frequently run into problems such as these even though we try hard to keep enough material on hand for at least a 90 days supply for all 30 kits we produce. It ain't easy.
Thanks for your patience .. but this is unlike making pizza or other simple products.

Just remembered that there was an old Scroll Saw floating around the shop, don't know where it came from. Knocked the crud off and took some photos, thought someone might be interested. Uses coping saw blades and has a two speed pulley setup. Hooking it up to a power supply and a new table should be all that is needed to put her back to work.

Might file or grind that screw head to a smaller diameter. I would probably go to a one slotted screw so I could reduce the head size smaller.  Counter sinking the screw and using a removable plug would allow you to dismount the Cutty Sark, for whatever reason, without damage.

I have purchased cork gasket material at auto parts and farm supply stores. Might be hard to find today, I have several rolls in the shop but they were bought over 20 years ago. Needed some a while back and found that it had hardened up and became brittle, soaked it in warm water and the cork came back to life. You can get a paper type of gasket material and cut it to size, soak it in water before you use it, makes it soft so it will take the form it needs to make a seal. Might be able to find some "O" rings to fit inside bottle caps.

Pipe will be fine, Nenad uses hard water in his house. Nenad has shown some unique fixes and methods during this build, so far it looks like he is producing a worthy model of the Cutty Sark.

I've used pieces of the plastic wrap one uses for bowls, etc.   Cover the opening and press it into the threads on the bottle then put the cap on.  Seems to work but I don't use paint much so I'm not sure of the longevity.
