EJ_L got a reaction from robdurant in Le Soleil Royal by EJ_L - FINISHED - Sergal - Scale 1:77 - 1669 Version
First carving has been completed and installed. A few defects but overall I’m satisfied especially considering my limited carving experience.

Ken, this piece is just basswood. I have a bunch of it laying around so I figured it would work for some of the simpler carvings. I'm probably going to switch to something harder like boxwood for the statues and ornaments that need to take on more detail.

What colors/stains will wales or trim pieces be? I would use contrasting colors to make them "pop", so if the wales are going to be a dark color, go with the provincial. If lighter than stain the hull dark walnut. If they are all going to be the same then pick your favorite! I think the light, special walnut stain for the interior is a good choice as it simulates a well worn white color that in my opinion would be appropriate for the interiors.

Here it is, the first completed quarter galleys roof. Starting to add the first of the decorative trim. I’ve also started to carve the upper wreath. So far so good.

Welcome to MSW! That is a great ship kit and one that many of us have built. You will be able to get all the help you will need and plenty of great ideas for building her. Best of luck to you and I look forward to seeing your work!

Hey,
After being fascinated with the detail put into models for years, I just started ship building, and I got Revell's 1:96 USS Constitution for Christmas. I realize now that it is going to be quite an ambitious project. The last model I build was an F-16 fighter jet over ten years ago. Needless to say I just glued that one together right out of the box, added the decals, and painted a few things. But I'm old enough, smart enough, and patient enough now (maybe?? ) to do a good job on this build. Most importantly I think, is that I want to have a great finished product when I'm done!
Any help is greatly appreciated, as I am not much of an artist

EJ_L reacted to Oliver24 in Hello from Romania
Dear fellow members,
I have always been fascinated by old wooden ships, so when I saw years back a finished kit by a family friend in Belgium, I decided to give it a try. However I never had the time and possibility to proceed with my plans till today, when I ordered a kit after some reading on the forum and doing a little bit of research.
I ordered from a local store an Amati Santa Maria kit. As far as I understood, this is an intermediate kit so I will definitely struggle with the project, but after seeing some youtube videos I decided to give it a try. My decision was influenced by the fact that I am interested in history and the story of Columbus and the discovery of the new world intrigued me. Also, I wanted to begin with a project which had a little bit of all the stuff: double planking, rigging and some easier mast developing.
After I discovered this international forum my determination got stronger because as far as I can read, there are wonderful people here who can guide me if I am struggling with some parts of the building process. Of course, I will open a topic about my work and I will post pictures.
I wish you all a Happy New Year!
Kind Regards,
Oliver

Hi,
I am german and currently working / living in Turkey. 53 years young and I love ships.
Schoner and Tallships my favorites, but I have as well a look on all old sailing vessels.
I made an apprenticeship as mechanical and a study as industrial engineer.
With some interruptions I am making ship models for 20 years.
Everytime with RC and from a kit.
Now I am trying on models based on drawing and without RC.
I enter in MSW to see, unterstand and to learn from you all.

Hi everyone,
I have been absent a few years. I just read the "Cautionary tale" story and it is a great one.
Let me first say, my disappearance was not due to taking on more than I can handle, not yet any ways,ha ha,,
I got distracted with other issues, hobbies and such. Then I was asked to build the constitution for theDistrict Atty, in my area,
He's a friend so I accepted, but being a novice, I decided to build the popular Revell 1/96 kit.
i was working on the uss syren blue jacket kit before I vanished, I got as far as planking and then the interruptions came.
So, it is possible I am one of the 12 mentioned ha, ha,,.
I started the constitution and that has been a long, and interrupted project too, Im rigging it now, and will post some pics of it in the plastic model forum.
Anyway, It is great to be back, I enjoy this website and when the plastic model constitution is done, I will get back to the Syren.
So Happy modeling everyone
Thanks!
