One more on the flat Tamiya "dry rubbing" technique in terms of the range of possible resulting surfaces - the cowling of the aircraft below was painted Tamiya flat black, and I rubbed it down with bare finger to this level of gloss - no additional processing, no clear gloss coat, just flat black rubbed down for about five minutes.

And you can see cery clearly the seam of where the center flat section is riveted to the outer curved section, because it's still dead flat. This is a detail of Dr.I cowlings you don't often see in kits, I used a small scraper to create it in this case.

So - you don't need to buy semi-gloss or gloss Tamiya paints, you get a better finish this way. And it does what was my original intent, which is making details clearly visible in the same way they are in the real-life versions.

In case you're wondering, yes the Axial prop is seven layers of elm and walnut like the original and hand carved. The Axial logo decals I made in Photoshop and printed on clear decal film with my printer.

Make it totally clear, here's the top view of the same piece, in some ways you can see the effect better in this image.

And here's one of the Model Expo 3 inch Ordnance Rifles, except that I basically scratchbuilt the carriage since I didn't like theirs. Why they use horrible-surface white metal on a complex shape like a field gun carriage wheel is anyone's guess. Anyway, this was painted flat Tamiya black, left for a week or so to dry, then rubbed down to this appearance, again I'm please with it.

    Brian,
That's so weird, when I double checked the website, it showed the big one....just the one I wanted.
I also had Hobby zones website open to verify the product.
I am so sorry for any inconvenience this may have triggered.

A small update, the frames/temp bulkheads have now been fitted in a basic jig.  The longitudinal temp stiffener has yet to be glued and will be done after I straighten a couple of the frames.  The eagle eyed will note a couple of frames not quite aligned; some of this is due to camera angle.  Gluing in the longitudinal stiffener will help keep them in place vertically, but first I need to fix/redo at least one of the frames.

This system works quite well and was well laid out by Dave when he did the artwork as I did not need to do much filing for fit at all.  The holes in the temp bulkhead (which will be broken away later) were for a toothpick to pass through to assist with alignment, but at this scale almost impossible to utilise and too fiddly.  Sorry all, I forgot the ruler again but this is only about 80mm long (just over 3") overall.

    cheers

Hi again folks; hope you all had a happy and safe festive season.

I have made a start on the two remaining boats to complete my build; the yawl and the skiff.  I am doing these part-time between the yard chores and HMCSS Victoria.

First, I would like to thanks DaveRow who has kindly designed the laser templates and cut the boat templates for his build but provided me with a spare set; many thanks Dave.  These are great, and make assembly a lot easier.  The template is 0.6mm thick so the keel is a lamination of 4 layers which creates a natural rabbet.  The rudder and transom piece are 2 x lamination but the remainder of the pieces will be single.  I don't think I would have achieved this level of detail without the template.  i will stage a ruler in my next set of shots to give a better idea of scale.

    cheers

Update  - all the guns & lids are now in place so she can defend herself. The tangs on the lid hinges were inserted in small holes drilled in the hull & with the ropes attached they are fairly sturdy. The ropes for closing the lids were simply tied to the pins on the backs of the dummy guns before gluing them in place. Happy new year to all & thanks for looking in.

Finished rigging the gaff today.  Nothing unusual or interesting about doing this.  It was fun and I basically created the gaff just like the boom.  One interesting feature to point out might be how the blocks are hooked to thimbles/bullseyes on the gaff.  The blocks were not just seized to the gaff.  This follows a method I saw on another cutter from the time period.  Just seemed more interesting than doing it the other way.

It has gotten harder to photograph now.  Its a much bigger subject to get in frame.

Next up will be the pendant tackles and shrouds....none of the falls or loose ends have been glued to their belaying points yet.  You can see them left a bit long on deck.  They are just made fast to each belying point and can be undone easily.  I did this just in case they have to be retensioned after the shrouds and stays are completed.  Some lines have a tendency to go slack as rigging progresses.

Tamiya omit several doors at the rear of the structure and add an extra ladder which is not in the other reference material. I quite like replacing the doors as when painted it is easier to wash them and then drybrush them to bring out the fact there are doors (hatches) not lumps. Finally the front adding the first of the Tamiya individual stanchions and a ladder from spares.

There are a multitude of range finders etc to be added yet but they will be painted off kit.

Great! This one is also waiting for me on the shelf! I visited the ship last year in France ( as well as the Hermione). And as soon as I have finished the Lady Nelson I will take on this one. So it's nice to have at least 2 other examples to learn from. Have fun and enjoy!

    Hello all together

time for a littele update. Of course am stil working on the hull. After a first sanding and planíng I have got a quite clean surface. Before I will sand another time with fine grained paper I will plank the bulwarks. It will give more stability to the entire construction.

Today I shaped the ship - that was quite funny but challenging. There is no pattern - you hae to measure from the plans and transfer the data to the model. I used a steel ruler and a calliper. It was exciting to get the same shape on starbord and portside But I think I got a good result. Next will be to prepare the decks and to plank them.

As always some pics to show the progress I have made so far.

    Cheerio to all

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1294137530/the-first-desktop-waterjet-cutter

... it's a desktop computer controlled water cutter. Most water cutters are as large as whole rooms and cost tens of thousands of dollars, but this one fits on a rather large desk. The advantage of water cutting over laser - no burn marks, and it can cut steel.

I am not sure whether this would be useful for our hobby ... water might cause ply to warp. But it certainly seems inexpensive enough for a rich hobbyist or a small manufacturer to buy one and try.

    Hello my friends

just another update. I finished the main first planking. Well... difficult and tricky but you can manage this. First of all - be patient. Second - patience. Third - don't hurry
Perhaps it would have been easier to use the 4/2 mm strips provided with the kit. But I did not like the size, so I used 7/1mm strips. Well, this was a good decision as I think. The inner planking will be done with the 4/2mm strips. It is bad that there is NO pattern how to cut off the planks to create the shape. But I love the challenge to get all done. You have to read the plans very very careful and - as said before - like a chess player think about the steps done in five or six days

Some pics show the progress - you all will know how it goes on. Planking the decks, planking the inner side, inbetween this shape the hull.

    Cheerio

    Hi Tony

    Thanks for your interest!

I took the images from the Anatomy of the ship Series from the Royal Caroline to make the starting front and side views (at the negining made using a pencil)  to start. Some of the drawings of the book were out of scale though, so I did further research on the web and begun to make the ·D final scketch doing interpolation and extrapolation.

I took a lot of time and corrections when it came to the time to fit it below the bowsprit. If I considered the size of the Crown from Giorgio's Osculati drawing, the Crown didn't fit in the actual space. Then another issue was the smaller Cherub.  I had to use all my "artistic" ability to work the proportions.

Then the Kit's Keel seems to be a bit unaccurate, so I had to adapt the dress a bit.

As mentioned in the earlier posts, we have been moving ahead with the build and the hull has been completed, including the copper plating.  The screw Built by Chris Ramsey) to the Maudslay design, does rotate but we did not bother with the feathering at this scale.    This design of the feathering screw did not require the whole screw to be raised, but was rather locked in the feathered position when under sail.
