    Wow, Eugene,

    very nice model !
will the intended kit really provide all the bits and sub assembly parts to build the cutter as you are demonstrationg here, How about the sails ?

It is time to work on sail and mount it to the yard. Was thinking since there is only one sail, it will be a walk in the park working on it but turns out not to be that way. Most likely the reason is that my skills are a bit rusty these days. But practice makes it perfect so lets start or what old Latins would say.. repetitio mater studiorum est.

Before i start, need to mention that kit plan does not provide much details how to mount the sail, what techniques to use to attach the sail, etc. Also, few threads on ship modeling forums showed different ways to attach the sail and including not that much detailed pictures from the process. Not having enough details about the whole process leave me with an opportunity to put a personal touch to the model. Which i did, so lets get it going....

Here is beginning of the process. Sail was mounted to the yard with assistance of few pieces of scoth tape to keep it stretched until i attach at least few lines of ropes.  I did not spend much time getting historically correct rope size, instead i decided to go with the rope size i think was available 400+ years b.c. and what i had in the shipyard...

Below picture is during rigging process; i ended up running 5 loops of a rope around the yard and freeze it with a touch of cyanogel.

During the process i used scotch tape to help keeping the sail stretched and on the yard...

Then i had to make four "eyes" (need to spend some times learning the proper ship modeling terms, dough) that will be used to run the rope thru and it is used to assist in rolling up the sail. Good old nail helped with correct eye diameter. First i run four runs of rigging around the yard, then run the line thru the sail and around the nail, back thru the sail and again around the nail making a two-loops eye. Small amount of cyanogel to freeze the eye..

    Finished

and with a test rope running thru..

All four "eyes" completed. Had to test the fitting on the mast...

Then i ended up making blocks, actually only two blocks needed on the ship. Tiny, 3mm blocks are very hard to keep on the bench during seizing process..

    Blocks attached to the yard..

After attaching two blocks on yard and running four lines of rope thru "eyes", here is a final sail/yard product..

Next i will need to complete the mighty ram... Had some challenges with soldering, copper, etc but will cover this process in the next post.

    Happy modeling..

    Good morning Nils.
    Just stunning.
All these little bits you are finding are just amazing and gives the Algier a look of it's own.

Nice find the fancy decore. They are spot on for your Chebec.

Umping ahead to the rear portion of the boat while plugging away at the deck.  In order to make painying easier(airbrush) im building as much as i can off the boat.  Here is a mock up with some of the molded plastic decorations in place.  Lots of flashing on the plastic bits to remove.  Most of the plastic parts are going to be gold.

Thanks for the advice Dan! I will be doing just that on the next deck.

I feel that I am finally back to where I was before the accident! I finished putting on the shot garlands!

Compairing it to what I had before, I think this is much better.  What I didn't realize was that the space between the shot garlands were actually roughly in the middle of where the corresponding gun would go.  I already had marked where the guns should be on the model and figured out that I had marked out everything correctly! That was a huge relief and 0 work had to be redone.  That means the gun placement as well as the hatch placements are correct.

Next, I am thinking of varnishing the deck,  then  remaking the bulkhead sides I removed and gluing them in place.  I am not that happy with the ones I already made and think I can make them better.

    Thanks!
    Jeff

That is a good idea!  I will have to try that next time. Thanks for thr advice John!

I had already purchased the sanding sealer and this is the outcome:

I like it a lot better than the varnish as its really clear and brings out the wood really well! The nails are more pronounced but not too overwhelming.   I need to dust off the black pained  haha!

I am happy with the result. I will get better at applying it the more I use it.

    Update :

fitting the decore rings around the gunports. The port side remains closed to the sea with decore shield plugs.
All oarports will have hinged, small doorlets, the port ones closed and the stb. ones open, because of the sweeps in place....
The wales have been painted dull black, the mermaid decore in golden color....

    Nils

the center of these butons will be cut away with a jig saw....., and remaining deburs faired carefully with a diamond file..

the rings and the lion decore are made from buttons for clothes

For the gold paint I`m using a Swedish product, Panduro, its a waterbased acryllic gloss coat, which gives far better results than the former used Humbrol gold enamel

the plug shields have a shoulder, whick lays against the inner bulwark planking. The spacing here had to be quite exact, in order to get everything in its place

Thank you for all likes, appreciate that. Today finished bow section build. Now will work on the deck furnitures and railings. Might anyone knows how to make small barrel? Want to add them to the deck, did not find any tutorial for that. Few photos.

Well the clamps are off and the work on the BARGE is done until next weekend. I have another personal build I want to spend some time on and a kit design project just getting underway. Keep an eye on MSW for news on that coming soon...........

I taped together a couple of pieces of thin cardboard to make a small firm envelope to store the flags, inset and sweeps' artwork and the chip board laser cut piece. I'll leave them safely in the bottom of the box until they are needed.

    Hi,
What I understood is those two parts (red circles) are continuation of the two timber of the bow section. Actually those area have to be wooden
Why did Mamoli prefer to finish and complete the end of a wood with casting metal?
And from picture (optical illusion?) lion's head is seen as in good position (yellow line).
How? You will cut some parts of the ornament below lion's leg to pull down the lion casting?
Me too, I had to intervene in the ornaments on my build.

Thank you Christian. I am still considering how to hide these wires, i might will make some barrels and make there connection for thin steel wire which will go to the masts. Or will make invisible connection under the mast base.
Today working on the bow. I find out metal parts need a lot of drilling and sanding before they can fit to they place. Few photos.

at last i have managed to get a few days off, and a few hours in on the build

having been corrected and forced to see the errors of my ways i did a bit of a revamp on the signal deck, for the time being is will now leave this and move on back to the superstructure

i decided to define the port holes better than the original idea I had, and actually used the brass ones from the Amerigo Vespucci kit that i abandoned a good few years ago, they stick out of the superstructure more than they should but for now they will do, the liners for the square ones look ok, but one or two of them look slightly wonky

    Hi Nils.
Regarding the amount of oars men.
"By the early 16th century states and navies grew and required more men. They used more and more unskilled slaves and prisoners. The Venetians designed a new system "alla senzile”: 3 to 5 men per bench, handling one large oar. Only the lead rower needed to be skilled, the others just followed his move. This allowed larger ships, but the side men were much less effective. Maximum speed dropped from some 6 to 4 Knot (more or less: a much discussed topic), as compared with 9-10 Knots maximum for ancient triremes (cf. Olympia's trials). The "senzile" system was soon adopted by all Mediterranean nations, and older galleys were reequipped that way."
