Trussben reacted to westwood in HMS Portland 1770 by westwood - Portland Scale Ship Co. - 1:48 - 50 gun 4th rate
Just a test for now.
The deadwood has almost been sanded, and I've started fitting the frames.

What red did you use? The paintings seem to show more of a brighter orangie red?
Do you plan on straight main wales or in anchor stock style? Any type of templates for keeping the port surrounds at the correct width?

Officially underway on chapter 2 now, I have all the Gunports primed, block sanded and painted. Tomorrow I will start milling wood and begin planking from the main wale up.

Hi, guys
Thanks for the comments and likes!
After a short break, I finished installing all the perpendicular frames on the port side today.
It went quite easily and quickly since I had already cleaned them of char beforehand. I was just fine-tuning little things,
such as the area that sits on the keel is flat
and free of char, because even glue on char doesn't hold.
And here is the result.
Now I'm off to the heavier part to prepare the deadwood and the aft cant frames.

Today I got back to work on Portland, I faired up the lower counter and added some high build primer on all the gunport frames.
I used a solvent based high build primer to seal up the MDF, it soaked it up like a sponge. I’ve always been a little concerned about swelling when adding water based products to MDF, the primer also makes sanding and finishing the ports nice, it fills small gaps or joints in the port framing.
Ive also been working on planking guides that will attach to each bulkhead and assist with spilling, more on that soon.

Trussben reacted to ChrisLBren in La Renommee 1744 by ChrisLBren - 1/48 - 2025
Plugging away at the hawse timbers - here they are after a few attempts. Pencil marks are there for waterline reference. I believe I need to install frame 1 first and then hope they will fit the keel and frame 1 after some adjustments - otherwise do them over yet again !
I am on the fence with nailing the frames with bolts simulated with 22 gauge square brass wire which is the most common way to do it. I'm just not sure if I like the appearance. I have still not decided whether or not the hull will have openings as the lines of this ship are so beautiful I may want to leave the frames intact which certainly is one reason not to bother with the bolts. I could change my mind though. Any opinions are welcome.

Starboard side framing completed, now onto the port side.
Obviously it looks awful at this stage as it needs “a **** ton” of sanding and fairing but we will get to that soon enough.
