Hi all, after some advice please, I have placed a couple of bow blocks and was wondering if some feedback on if I am doing this right could be made please. The bulkhead positioning was going ok until I realised quickly thankfully that bulkhead 2 was 9 MM. Too short to slot down correctly, thankfully no glue had set so I recovered the mess up. I decided to do the bow blocks before all the bulkheads so I had a decent grip. Thanks indeed for any feedback. I have been reading the site primer on blocks but I went for balsa as it was easier for me to work on. Terry

HMS Naiad 1797 by albert - FINISHED - 1/48

That's amazing, it makes you realise as well just how superb the craftsman were in the 18th and 19th centuries to have made models for presentation to the crown when a ship was placed for contract. Your work is just a pleasure to watch, such skills are becoming a thing of the past now, so long may ship models reign to keep something of the past alive. -
Went into town this morning for to look for a birthday present for the wife and found this rather splendid book in a charity shop and bought it for £2.00. Spooky as well as in the future this is the very ship I intend building as my "big model" once I have learned enough here to be able to cope. Has some wonderful ships plans. A good mornings work.

Thanks herb, I am starting to realise that now, I don't know if I am missing something but ven finding the measurements for what the masts will be is confusing me, but hopefully over the weekend I can get the bulkheads in place and squared off which will then get me on my way. That's if there are enough hours in the day left as its fish tank clean weekend which grabs a lot of my free time.

That's brilliant thanks hornet, I measured up the bow piece against the ship skeleton and it is not a flush fitting but I can I think get away with rubbing some of the wood off where she sits into the bow. I did wonder about planking first as it would make it quite difficult with the lack of planking experience I have to get good cuts. The Lego and the black edges are a great idea and one I will duly carry out. I'm just doing dry runs now until I get a few bits of Lego. Many thanks for your time. Terry

Thanks all for your replies, I have ordered some titebond glue now, was just using a commercial wood pva glue. Question please, is it better for me to plank before I add the bow facia or should I plank and add the fitting after? The bow fitting is not a perfect fit at the moment and that was direct from the kit. I had problems last night fitting bulkhead 1 as for some reason the bow semi circular fittings were preventing the bulkhead sitting neatly. I placed it where it needed to go but I think I may have done something, I filed things lightly so the bulkhead clicked in, so just a case of squaring it off now. Thanks all Terry

Well, after finishing the Longboat my impatience got the better of me and the Supply box was initiated, so far I have mounted the 1st section onto a straight board so that I can this time get things symmetric, unlike my Longboat build where I never realised and put it together sitting on my lap. Work is heavy now so I will do what I can as and when so to speak. In the meantime, can anyone advise on the best wood to create the bow profiles with, I have heard that some Balsa does not go well with PVA glue, my aim is to make life as simple as possible when I start the planking. Regards for now. Terry

Well after three months of learning loads from this site and attempting to move along I have finally, apart from the odd touch up, sort of finished my Endeavours longboat, I will post a few more pics as I would welcome critism ect as to what I could do better. I have made many mistakes along the way and the rigging is as best I can make out from the awful kit instructions, but I have never enjoyed doing something so much before.

Seriously talented people for sure, there are loads of good ideas I will hopefully fall back on. The micro work you do is amazing, reminds me of the guy who builds statues ect on the tip of a matchead. Great thread this one.

Many thanks Doug, I have duly ordered one, I am going to go for the windows option at the stern as well, that really does set it off. I think I saw them on the cornwall site, little 4 pane metal ones. Must admit, I am not sure about the kit ladder, I think I will be hunting other bits down, this happened when I use to build aircraft, I think 50 per cent ended up being bought or self made. regards

Wow, how clever is that idea, she looks lovely indeed. How long will it be before we are all using 3D printers to make models.

I was not going to open a build log until I physically started building the ship, however I wanted to open it now as I am currently doing my inventory check on the kit and have had to mail Jotika for a couple of bits to be sent, basically the rudder hinges and brackets. So today really is day 1 as such which sets a date for myself. On first views, I can really see a difference in quality from my previous build attempt with Endeavours longboat which I am hoping to finish at the weekend. The eye opener has to be the build plans, they are totally huge, although they really are something to look at, for me in my small space they are slightly too big, but I am not complaining though as they are quality items and hopefully Jotika will add the supply to their on-line plans system on their site where the prints can be printed on to A3. Ok now the headbanging, I am doing an inventory on the parts and right now it is a second language, thankfully I am working out the parts slowley and have lablled the plastic bags so I do not make any mistakes in the future, I think I know what the little metal wings are that look like mini batman symbols. I am going to seek a lot of help I think as I am so use to written instructions telling me what to do rather than follow print instructions, although during my days as an aircraft painter I did follow paint plans but they are nowhere near this level. Thanks to Frank I am reading the beginners planking tutorials and better ways to do things and on this build I am hoping to learn the art of bow and stern blocks. So bear with me all, I shall get things up and running ASAP and if anyone has any advance warnings as to what not to do before I move on it will be appreciated as I am working on the idea that you start at sheet 1 and work to sheet 6. I have seen some superb looking Supply builds on this site and although matching them is a distant dream, they really have given me something to work to in respect of taking my time and doing things as best as I can. Regards Terry

Hi Doug, can I just ask please.... The lifeboat on your supply, was this part of the kit? I got mine today and am doing the inventory check and there is not one with the kit, so I thought I'd better ask just in case this is a self build by yourself or an addition as such. Thanks for any feedback. Terry

Hi all Is it possible to do tied up sails on any model? I was thinking that i'd like to add sails to the Supply kit towards the end of her build (in about 3 years with the rate I work) but tied up to the yard arms, is it a simple process or would I need to totally rearrange the ships rigging to accommodate this possibility. Many thanks for any input. Terry

wow, she is a beauty, I have duly added this ship to the countless many I keep seeing in here that are just wonderful creations. Love these builds, they really do give you something to aim for.

Can I ask something please? in the pictures you show the setting of the battens for the first planking, then as you plank I noticed the battens come off, can I ask what the batten procedure does so to speak, is it a way of aligning the planks somehow. Many thanks. Terry

what if after the joints had dried you then added a very tiny bit of cotton to the front of each joint giving the effect of a wrap around tie. Must admit this is a good way if you the model maker has issues with their hands ect. I did see a few pictures the other day of a whaler being made which used the same process you are using, the guy then added a blob of PVA to each supposed joint, let them dry and they looked really good.

Hi Steve Yes I read your build log, you did a magnificent job, something I will fall back on a few times for sure. It is a step up for me so I will take as much time as it needs. Terry

I am in the throws of finishing my Endeavours longboat and after looking and looking I have ordered the 1/64 Caldercraft brig supply. I have spent hours and hours on the longboat and although not new to model making, I am totally new to wood ships and I wanted to test my patience, I loved it indeed, it is facinating. Any ways, I have looked through build logs and will continue to do so, in the meantime, does anyone who has worked this kit have any advice on anything it comes with that could be better changed, any of the kit parts. I am in no rush with builds so will take as long as it takes and do a build log. I hated the instructions on the AL longboat and dearly wanted some plans, I have not picked the supply lightly, I picked it because I loved the look of just a rigged ship and no sails and the ships history. I however cannot find any books on this ship so if anyone does I'd be grateful for feedback. I'm all excited now :-) thanks for any. Help. Terry

I used water infused by a t bag to stain my sails, they came out ok. You can make the tea mixture as weak or as strong as you like and it's cheap :-)

Hi Frank I have been looking through builds for Supply and without doubt you have done one beautiful job indeed. I am hoping to get the Caldercraft kit in the next few weeks and will use your build log as a learning kerb for myself if that is ok. I will take heed as well in certain areas for the rigging where following the kit instructions makes things harder later on, such as doing the ratlines etc first. Thanks for a great post. Terry
