Gerhardvienna reacted to gjdale in 1949 Chris-Craft 19' Racing Runabout by gjdale - FINISHED -Dumas - 1:8 Scale - RADIO
Finally got around to completing the wheel today. I painted the hub assembly, trim piece and wheel rim with Vallejo Ivory, sprayed through the airbrush, while the Horn Ring and Throttle Lever are chrome plated. After test fitting all parts, I glued them in place with epoxy – no going back now!
Here is the completed wheel and steering shaft assembly:
And another view:
And here it is side-by-side with the kit-provided part:
And finally, here are a few “glam” shots showing it in place in the boat:
I decided I wasn’t happy with the cutwater, so have re-made it this weekend as well. Pics to follow once chrome plating is complete.

Congratulations on a great looking runabout Grant. Your skills have definitely hit a new high - the steering wheel blew me away, among many other things .

Back to the 12pounder carriage, I made the small rear wheel. I used 6 mm brass tube for the "tyre", 4 pieces of 2mm brass tube for the rim, and 1 piece of 1mm brass tube for the hub. I had no 1,5mm tube, so i had to use the 2mm, and could set only 4 instead of 5 pieces for the rim, but it looks good, I`ll keep it.
All the little pieces in the soldering form
After soldering.....
Filed to correct width, and mounted to the carriage
Best regards, thank you all for watching, thanks for comments, hitting the button,

Hi johnhoward
Thank you and Cher for that, once more some new views from the engines. Especially the first three pics show the engines from another angle, I`ve never seen in any forum or website! There will be some differencies in my build, due to the conditions for sailing the ship by RC. But most of the components of the engines will be really close to the original one!
Meanwhile I made the drawings and .stl files for the paddlewheel bearing blocks, they will be 3D printed. This saves a lot of working time, and makes it easier to work with.
All measurings on the drawings are in 1/10th mm!
Regarsd; and thank you all for watching!

Great job Gerhard,
Bill just finished the rear wheel for 12 pdr carriage for our USS St. Louis model at 1:24 scale, twice the size of yours, which really shows how tiny your wheel really is. I'll post a photo on the USS St. Louis build sight.

This is Bill's version of the rear wheel for the 12-pdr Boat Howitzer Carriage for our USS St Louis model.
If you haven't seen it yet, take a look a Gerhardvienna's version for his USS Cairo scratch build live steam model at half this scale. It's really remarkable!

Just working on the bigger front wheels, lets see how many times I will have to make them. But as you said, try and error is what we do until we got it right

Trial and error as usual, Gerhard. With a little perseverance one can reach one's goal, as you have shown!

Isnt that why we are doing what we are doing?
If it were a fantasy build, nobody would care, but as we try to do "dowsized copies", they must be accurate. Just my two cents...............

Hi johnhoward
So they were meant as ventilation funnels, i got it now! The position of them should be good to see in the Bob Hill plans, but there is a difference for the ventilation grate. In his side view frames plan the grate seems to be roof shaped, as I made it, in his plansheet "Frame 72 with interior" he shows the same part flat as you made it. I can still make that change, would be no problem, but I must be sure to make the correct decision!

Hi johnhoward
Maybe I`ve dicovered some, in Wikipedia I found a pic from the Uss Cincinnati, with openings under the aft boat, and somewhat like a small trunk on the rear superstructure. Maybe this was a later modification?
Pic source : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Cincinnati_(1861)
On this photo I also discovered two narrow tubes(?) behind the big smokestacks, could this have been funnels from the engine? and; where were the four ventilation funnels located?
Questions, Questions, Questions.....
Best Regards

Hi Carl
Thank you! Took me more than one attempt to make it, the first tries were absolutley bad. Did not photograph them, but in the end it worked out fine.

Hi Nenad
Not too bad, learning by doing is all we do all the time...............
In that small size it is much harder to make such boats then in "my" 1:50 measure! I KNOW, the next will be alot better!

sorry I didn't get back last evening.........I had supper and Zonked out. .....tough day at work these two pictures were taken before the camera decided it needed a recharge. I was at my desk, so the pictures may not be too good. the blocks work well.......here is the what the lower one looks like.......the bottom main stay is doubled and will look thicker that all the rest.
the stay will terminate with a pulley assembly at the base of the fore mast......like this...
then I realized that doing the stays in this manner, would be too much for the mast trees.....causing them to bend very easily. I had to add the back stays to help me out. later, it ended up on my table.....I had to stand to better run the rigging. I didn't take too many pictures...feeding the camera.......but I ended up with this bit of progress.
here's a better shot of the main stay rigging.
.....and the pulley assemblies associated with them.
the mizzen will only have this one stay that is done this way.........it's not tied off yet.
the other blocks you see will be devoted to the braces. there is one other stay that I need to add to the mizzen........I may do it this way as well.
this is the standing rigging ......so far. I will do the rest when I get back to her. then I can start the running rigging thanks for looking in thanks for the good word Piet........and thanks to those who hit the like button
