    Greetings fellow modelers.

A belated thank you to Keith, Kev, Andy and Ron, for your comments.  How has an entire month gone by unnoticed?

I am sure you are correct on this point Kev.  It wouldn't take more than one or two complaints from clients about a sore bottom for the guide operators to fix that.  Thanks for checking out my log and for the nice words.

Hello Ron.  Thanks, I didn't know about these epoxy rivet decal sheets, but I can think of many possible future uses.

    Finished

I've been working on this Rangeley model in fits and starts between outdoor projects and other activities.  But it is finally complete.

A couple of minor details have been added.  A fly rod and reel made of wood, brass and paper.

And a tackle box of wood, styrene and brass.

Exposed rock ledge is visible everywhere in Maine and I reasoned it would make an appropriate base for the model.

Both ends of the boat got stern/bow lines.

I chipped high points off the rock until it sat flat without rocking and then attached felt feet to keep it from destroying our furniture.  Also, I epoxied a label to the underside.  The hull received a final coat of paint and everything was epoxied to the rock.

Thanks to all for stopping to take a look and for the “likes”.   And I especially want to thank everyone who has left comments.  Your thoughts, suggestions and support are always greatly appreciated and I thank you so much.

    Be safe and stay well.

    Update

fitted the skylight, the mainsail sheet and the two uncompleted companionway hatches....
I`m trying to get the aft name sign and the port name reduced to the right size. The windows / excel tool allows to get the display in a rounded, bent shape, but only in a too large size. This is to compensate the tapered aft-section. I intend to print them on transparent self-adhesive foil and cut out the text for bringing it on to the hull surface. It looks like my printer has no built in decline function

Ranger is now completed. It's taken me well over 2 weeks longer than I expected due to illness, hospital etc!

This has been a beautiful model to build and very, very easy. Nothing here is at all taxing and she's perfect for anyone who's never built a model before, as are all the fisher kits. I do very much like this one though. I do find them easy after doing six of the fishers though! Anyway, here we go. These photos are very self-explanatory.

Here she is, now finished. The little boat on deck does come with the kit too.

Time for another update. I have continued forward on the deck with fittings and equipment. Nothing has been permanently mounted yet. I want to see everything together first, to check that the proportions looks good.

In this photo, we can see the top of the windlass. Nothing else of the area in front of the fore mast can be seen above the railing. I need to make an educated guess.

I have decided for something similar to the layout shown in the following photo. It is from another schooner from about the same time. It shows the windlass, a companionway and a hatch. There are also two bollards at the railing, similar to the photo above.

For the windlass, the kit contained some nicely made brass pieces.

However, I don't feel that the roll is accurate enough. So I decided to make my own pieces.

The result, thus far. There are still the handles, and the mechanism for turning the drum to install. Maybe I will wait with that for later, so I won't break them when working with other things.

I'm still thinking about redoing the windlass drum. It may be a bit too big. I will look at how it looks together with the rest and decide later...

I've now completed the quarterdeck rail and the transom rail. I pretty much followed Chuck's instructions and sequence, including cutting down the transom frames before doing the quarterdeck rail. Not everything came out quite as straight as I would have liked. One change that I made from the sequence was to drill the holes for the gunport eyebolts and ringbolts before mounting the rail uprights, since I was sure that nothing good would come of trying to drill over and around the deck furniture and fixtures. I also added the eyebolts and ringbolts at the transom ports, as shown on the plans.

I had made up the fairleads, but somehow managed to vacuum them up and then compounded my stupidity by throwing away the laser sheets with the spares after completing the six needed. I will now have to scratch build them before moving on to the guns.

The next step is the cabin. Again, it is an interpretation from grainy photos, combined with details borrowed from photos of similar ships or models.

I'm currently working on a skylight.

    Hi Marc,
Just looking in and your model is looking fantastic. You are a braver man than I, rigging the model with sails. After rigging a previous model with square sails, it's a task that I want to avoid from now on! But your sails look great and they're a very nice addition to your model. Good luck going forward.
    Cheers,

Well after a bit of a hiatus I have finally started back at it. I have to get rolling on the Norske Love because this just arrived in the mail this week.

Started planking the forward and after decks so they will match the lower exposed deck. Added a bit of colour to the captain’s cabin floor as well.

During my research for this project I had a lot of trouble finding good step by step reference photos on how to tackle the bow/fore-peak and stern sections. In this log I hope to concentrate on these sections and present my understanding of how it should look and problems I encounter along the way.
The next three photos show construction of the fore-peak bulkhead. I first soaked the section in water for a couple hours and clamped it in place to get the necessary curve (no pic so much for detail images). Next the bulkhead was covered with 0.7mm X 5mm mahogany strips.

I stained the bulkhead door trim mahogany and painted the doors green to match the panels’ mid-ships. To paint the doors green was not in the instructions just “artistic license”.

Added brass door handles, also not in the instructions. These were left over eye-bolts that I bent and passed through drilled holes in the doors. Super glued handles on the back of the door to secure them but then thought maybe I should use a drop on the front also, mistake as you can clearly see super glue remnants on the front of the doors. The bulkhead is currently rubber banded to a tape roll to keep its shape while waiting for install.

    Until next time Cheers

I have focused a bit on the stern. As I have already described, I have filled in the cut-out for the propeller. There are a few other things that I think I need to modify compared to the kit.

The plan does not show typical pintles and iron bands, instead there seem to be a rod running through a series of sockets.

I have found some pictures that indicate a similar construction. However, I suspect that this might be a change made after the installation of a motor and propeller. I will go with a more traditional mounting of the rudder. The picture below shows the typical coloring and decoration of the transom of these schooners. Meta was no exception.

As I did with the white line on the side, I will however make the white border in wood of another color.

First I made a jig. I use 1 mm walnut for this. They were soaked for a half a minute in hot water, and then put in the jig to dry.

    Th
The two holes for mooring lines in the transom were made by drilling a larger hole, in which a 4 mm walnut dowel was inserted. Then the real hole could be drilled in its center.

The bulwark is now completely planked. I have added a strip of mahogany as a contrast color in place of the painted white stripe on the original. This wood was actually part of the content of the kit. The first of the kit material that I have actually added to the model. Otherwise, I have only cut things away and replaced them. 😄

I have also installed the false deck. The kit supplied deck had warped and cracked, so I didn't want to use that. I only used it as template and made a new from lime wood.

The bulwark supports are also from lime. Since I don't have a detailed plan, I made an educated guess about dimensions and spacing. They are closer together along where the shrouds will be attached.

Finally! Actually a bit earlier than I had expected, the last plank is installed. The progress of the planking has been good, and I have been able to put a bit more time into building than I thought.

There is still a bit of cleaning up to do. Some of the scarf joints has sticks out a bit. But overall I'm satisfied with the result. The picture below shows the worst part in the worst side light.

Just a little update with the masts of my Cutty Sark. It was quite the process getting the masts, tops and crosstrees assembled. I tried to prep them as much as possible before the paint came out. I decided to paint/stain them as they now appear on the actual ship in Greenich. They were first stained and varathaned and then masked off for painting. In the past I have always painted by brush and Humbrol enamel paint, but decided to invest in an airbrush and acrylic paint instead. The primary reason behind this is because of the many, many blocks which I will be painting in the future when the yards are assembled. What a time killer! Airbrushing them will be way more efficient! So with a brand new airbrush in my shop I opted to airbrush the masts as well. A bit to learn but I am very happy with the results. And no more "holidays"! A super investment that only took several decades to find out....
Here are some pic's of the results.

In this picture the masts are stained and varathaned, and some are masked with tape and saran wrap.

Here they are spray painted which went super slick.

The finished product with the deadeyes and mast bands painted.

    The underside of the tops.

    The topsides of the tops.

    The crosstrees.

This is my new airbrush. It came as a complete set with the compressor as well. Beside it are a bunch of belaying pins. I can't believe I used to paint these by brush. And two coats at that!

    Thanks for looking in.

    Hi All,
Just popping my head up after a long while with Cutty Sark. I have been in the shop from time to time, but that was for other projects. I have been working lately on CS's yards and they are now done except for the paint. I am now poring over the Campbell's rigging drawings, Longridges chapters on rigging as well as Underhill's book covering the same topic. All three are invaluable. Less so the drawing that accompanies the kit. That said, not everyone is a rigger and the drawings are adequate for a completed model.
Here are some pic's of the yards in place. They are dry fitted for the moment, so not all are level.

Thanks, but keep in mind that they are dry fitted for now. I simply wanted to get the various spars together to show some progress on the masts. I have Longridge's book which stipulates the rake of the masts. Thanks for looking in.
