Prior to installing the boat on the display base, strips of brown felt were glued for a custom fit. Three days of rigging the buckets with handles and rope coils using Syren ULTRA scale rope completed the model. I did my best to tie sheet bend knots, although that detail is difficult to notice at this scale. This was an enjoyable project and I learned a lot. Thank you David for designing this kit and keeping an eye on the build. Ryland Craze and Mike Stuntflyer, our exchanges on paint strategies and finishes was invaluable. I hope the rest of you will continue to follow as I get back to the Mayflower- Model Shipways.

What a wonderful job on this Dory. Always a pleasure to be able to follow your precise and careful work. And the detail and care in the presentation turns a simple model at first glance into a little masterpiece. Bravo and thank you!

I have done all the bigger boxes, the smaller ones comes next. The WOP gives the wood a deep red / brownish colour.
Stay save.

Well done, Steve! All shipshape and Bristol fashion. I'm sure the skills you've honed will be very useful on your next model.

I, too, use the poor man's lathe as Keith describes and it's great. One additional note, the drill's chuck can easily leave marks or other damage to the dowel, so it's important to leave extra length on whatever you're doing. So if you need a rounded mast 8" long, make sure you cut the piece, say, 8.5" long so that extra half goes in the drill and you can cut it off when you're done. Otherwise one end will be damaged and you'll be upset! (trust me)

Yes, agreed. A drill will be necessary, but I don’t think she will need it for quite some time into her next project.

Keith, thanks for explaining the procedure! I understand what you're saying now. And, as part of my household tools, I actually do have a drill. It goes forward and backward, and the speed is regulated by the pressure I put on the trigger, so I'm assuming it can be called a variable speed drill. I will begin practicing with it! (Mostly, I use it to drill holes for picture hanging, or other little home repair jobs around the house, although I'm not very "handy" when it comes to house maintenance!)
Thanks again for all the encouragement. My new Phantom model kit arrived today. I'll probably take some time off before starting it, as the Kansas heat & humidity has finally abated somewhat, and the plan is to play a lot of golf in the nice weather!

My buntlines and clewlines are in place. One more shroud and my rigging on the square rigged foremast is complete. I need to reave and prepare five more shrouds, one for the foremast, and four for the main mast. Next I will add the stays, then the braces. Also a couple of jib sails. After that, more skylights and deck accessories like the windlass, bridges, cannons and davits. The end of my modeling is in sight. The paper object on the forestay is to remind me it is there, and help me to not stick my hand into it.🤣

Tigersteve reacted to hamilton in Bluenose by hamilton - 1:64 - POB - from Model Shipways plans
Another update on Bluenose - finished the hull. I first applied a few coats of yellow paint to the bulwarks for the cove and a few coats of white along the hull's waterline region, then masked off where the white waterline stripe and the cove (yellow) are located using 1/16" masking tape. The 1/16" strip is too wide for the cove, but....
I then used a mix of two slightly different shades of red applied one after the other in four coats to get a slightly weathered look to the hull below the waterline and used Bone Black (a slightly bluish black) on the hull above the waterline (three coats here were sufficient). The test for me is always having the patience to wait to remove the masking and reveal the full finished effect. The waterline stripe worked out very well, but the cove needs touching up here and there - the port side is a bit better than starboard and I think a bit of fine knife work will help to clean this up to a decent standard.
Next steps - finishing the mounting and adding framing strips for cabin and hatches on deck....nice to be moving on to more superstructural work! Bye for now and enjoy!

Before installing the rope for the beckets, the holes needed to be reamed out. The tip of the ropes were treated with CA glue to prevent unraveling while passing them through the holes. The instructions advise cutting a 4” piece of rope, but I ended up cutting 6”.
After knots were tied, watered down white glue was applied. When dry, the excess was cut with a sharp blade as close to the knot as possible. For the bow, a bit of excess rope was left after the knot. This looked cleaner than when I cut very close to the knot. Watered down white glue was also used to set the ropes into position.
Securing the base is next before rigging the buckets.
