Hi Every one, Its been awhile since my last update and most probably figure I fell off the ends of the world. Well the misses sent me a life line and  finally went back to doing some thing on her. I sort of been stuck  on the cables and how the messenger was routed. Ben from Ropes of Scale help me on the cable and Druxey gave me the ideal about the snatch block.  So  I went to work on making a snatch block for the messenger using Lee's measurement, from his  book The Masting and Rigging of English ships. It didn't come out to bad But I leave that up to you.

Hi Kevin I have to agree with you on the movement because Alfred's frames did the same thing when I was trying to sand them down. One of the things I did, is along the same lines but I made some temporary ribbands and use bread ties to tie then in place. Didn't think about PVA at that time You can get roll's  of this stuff, at a cheap price.  The photo's below show some of the temporary ribbands.

Alan you will know when its finished when you ran a plank across it and your fingers feel  nothing but a level  area from bow to stern. This and when  your happy with it. It looks like your have a lot of fun but she does look good from my screen. Another thing you could do is cut some small battans and planks and tie them to the hull at different  height and  this will help you figure out if its faired. Of course you already knew this about the above items. Gary

Looking good Alan. Now were have I seen this hull before? When it came to Alfred those many years ago I broke up a glass from a picture frame and use the pieces to help me with all the differnt angle's and tight places.  Do be carefull if you do. Can't ever remember cutting my self, not sure were I read this.

Well guys, sort of out done my self this time on updates, figure it was time to work on the mast to make sure it fit in place before I can't get to certain places. After a couple of daysI finally got the fore mast looking some thing like a mast, but still a long way to go with it but its a start. Have to say thank you to Alan and druxey for info on the mast and helping me bring it to life.

    The Trundle Heads.
    4 pieces in 2 layers-overlapping semicircles each 2.39mm thick.
The central hole is 10 sided to fit the Capstan Barrel.
    Outside diameter 20.14mm.
The shared surfaces are each scored (radiating from center) to form the 5  Capstan Bar Holes-1.86MM sq.
The score is therefore 0.93mm each side.
After cutting the 4 pieces to size, temporarily stuck them to a thicker disc of wood for easier gripping in the vise when milling. The Dividing Attachment for the Proxxon, again invaluable.
The cut-out pattern then stuck, and scores milled.
I found that a quick soak in alcohol and use of a hot hair dryer simply separated the pieces from their support.
The lower pair turned over and restuck to its support. New pattern placed and mortises for matching the Whelps approximated, at a depth of 0.53. with the mill. Removing from the vise, these were finished more accurately with a chisel blade.
The upper pair similarly separated, turned over and reattached to its base. A circular score,1.59mmx0.2mm, milled, with outer edge 0.59 within the outer edge of the Trundle Head.
This is for fitting an iron ring inset on the head.
Only after this stage, was the central hole roughed-out  with the mill to be finished with the chisel blade and fitted individually around the Barrell.

This piece was fun to make but the final result was not as good as it should have been. I have seen Dan Vadas’s  work- his skill and detail is astounding. I’m tempted to make it again at 1:24 scale.

    Capstan Pawls.
A pair of single iron bars that act as a brake. 11x1.6x0.8mm, bolted at one end to the Capstan Step, allowing each to swivel.

This is the sail locker, not the pump room.
I don't have a lot of experience with chisels, but lately I've been learning to use them and I must say that the feeling is very good, so much so that I prefer to do some work with these hand tools rather than with the milling machine.
The very important thing is to keep the chisels perfectly sharp at all times. and this can be achieved in a variety of ways, some of which are well explained in tutorials on you tube.
In addition, chisels must be of high quality, so it is better to invest a little more money in better tools than to make do with poorer tools that will soon lose their sharpness and ruin our work.
The kit of mini chisels of Russian origin that I bought a few years ago and that you see in the photos is really excellent and helps me a lot in the small joints that you can see in the construction of the decks.

Cleats for the topgallant lifts and royal lifts
    I almost forgot!
Wasn't there something else with the shrouds? There are a few details I'd better mention now.

The description of the monograph for La Créole itself does not clearly state how the lifts for the topgallant yards and royal yards are to be attached. As far as I could tell from the description, the lifts were attached somewhere in the area of the top. On the original photos of the Paris model of the La Créole, you can clearly see two cleats on each of the topmast shrouds. Until now, I could not clearly identify the ropes used there. However, after some research, my suspicions were confirmed. These are the lifts for the topgallant yards and royal yards.

Source: Monograph by J. Boudriot, detail of original model

The next step was to clarify the shape and size of these cleats, a total of 3 x 4 pieces, which I derived from the original photograph and drew.
I made the cleats from service tree. The following pictures show different stages of the production.

The last picture shows the result.

Attaching these cleats to the topmast shrouds will probably be another small challenge to master.

Hi Bruce d. I did finally get a reply which came from Henry Kriegstein late Friday but didn't get to it till today. Took the family to Cincinnati and just got a chance to look at it.  It helped me answer question about pillar's in the manger and was it possible that they may of been used as roller's for the messenger. I was excited to see this in their book, the pillar's in the  manger but  looked to be holding up the beams and not what you think of as rollers. Hard to really make it out from the picture for sure.  I would post it but would have to ask the Kriegstein first to make sure its ok.  If your interested let me know please and will ask them if it ok.  Gary
