Hi Jeff, What I did with mine is use a needle to make small pin pricks to the ends of the planks which showed up beautifully when I varnished the deck without them being too much.

    Shipyard Update:
    Bowsprit and Jib Boom:
Me and the shippy's been working on getting the Jib Boom into shape for the TopGal rigging to attach to.

A traveler has been added to the Boom (for a Jib) with the tackle under.
A couple of pictures of the parts, welded and on the boom, and then tackle attached.

The above: I cut a slot in a ring, formed a hook and a loop, slid onto a piece of bar ready to weld up. I was hoping the hook and loop would rotate on the bar, but that went out the door when the solder ran.

Traveler in place on the boom, will do the job. Shipyard spent hours to get it to this stage.

End of the Boom taking shape with traveler tackle rope, 2 Horse ropes over the end. I counted another 4 more ropes to go onto the end.

Traveler blackened and painted black, rope attached.

Traveler tackle attaches back to the middle of the Bowsprit head.

A couple of items onto the Bowsprit

Added two(2) thimbles back behind the Fore-preventor stay to hold the ropes coming back, similar to on the Endeavour Replica.

Added Tackle to the Jib Boom end for extending the Jib Boom out when retracted.

Probably add the rope/blocks on the end of the Jib Boom next.

OK ~ as with the deadeyes and most of the blocks, I cheated with the anchors -- I bought over-the-counter items instead of trying to make my own. The ones I got are quite acceptable and probably better that I would have made myself.

    Jim,
There is no such thing as cheating.  I like to think of it as using the available resources to fit your needs and accomplish the goal.  I would think in our cases the goal is making an eye pleasing piece as a result of a hobby interest.  You certainly have met the goal.

Good to hear from you Steve and I hope all is well with you.  You'll be pleased to know that your Bounty build is still my go to reference point for my build.  All the best with the RC Plane and yes I would love to see some photos as well.

Thanks for the comment, Derek, and to the others for the likes.

I was right in my remark at the end of my previous post ~ I DID hear the foremast shrouds calling . . . and they kept me busy for a couple of weeks. I have to say I'm glad that I've now got all the lower mast shrouds in place as I was finding it a bit tedious. On a really good night I would get 4 shrouds (2 each side) done but on 'normal' nights it was more like 2 shrouds. (there are 22 on the fore lower mast)

Deadeye lanyards waiting for the fore stay and preventer before being finally tensioned and trimmed.

In order to relieve the tedium of  the shrouds I diverted to a few other projects. I made the basic platform of the fore top, had a go at rigging the port side cat tackle and assembled an anchor. OK ~ as with the deadeyes and most of the blocks, I cheated with the anchors -- I bought over-the-counter items instead of trying to make my own. The ones I got are quite acceptable and probably better that I would have made myself.

    The cat tackle  >>>

Here's what comes in the anchor kit >>>

The only thing I found a bit tricky was getting that brass rod to bend into an acceptable round ring.

. . . and then having some fun trying to serve the ring >>>
Still have the bandings to be fitted to the stock.

    Shipyard Update
Bowsprit Horse and Stay Sail Netting:
Put together the above as an off-boat construction.
Mix of AoTS and Replica details.
Thanks to Steve "Shipaholic" for sending me the netting some time back.

Above is the netting sewed around the rope sides with timber ends (overall 45mm long x 11mm wide)

Added knots along the ropes either side, and loop at lower ends for lashing to bow head eye-bolts.
The electrical board comes in use for "pinning" items to work on.

    Lashed in place.

The Bowsprit Boom in it's "pull back" position whilst all this going on to make sure the horse and net cleared.
Added a lift behind the Fore Preventor Stay.

Might try the Top Gallants next.

The repair has gone well - you'd never know ....

However mounting the driver boom proved to be a bit of a nightmare.  There are a number of traps and I fell into all of them. The main thing is to avoid the rigging fouling the lanterns and their supports. I didn't. I drilled the holes for the eyelets about 1.5 - 2mm too low. Fortunately the mistake is under the hook and the rigging and is not noticeable though I will probably try to repair it.

This shows more the chaos of my work table than the boom.

Make sure the driver boom clears the middle lantern.  Mine didn't.  The plans show the boom parallel to the waterline.  Best make it to be at a very slight angle.

Without the saddle, the whole process would have been far more difficult.

Could I please get some advice from those builders more experienced than me?  I'm planning ahead a little but I'm looking at the design of Chain Plates provided with the kit (left in the photo).  Firstly, I think they are what I would call straps not chains and I don't think that they look right.  As you can see I've made up some others and I intend to attach this by one link to the Deadeyes and I would blacken them before fitting. My dilemma is am I right or am I overthinking it and which of mine look the best alternative?

Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated

Morning all, been working pretty well this week and I have completed the nightmare called the Cutwater.  I'm sure that all the lessons I've learned constructing this will save me in good stead for future builds.

After this I turned my attention to the steering gear and for the first time tried my hand at seizing ropes.  You guys make it look so easy!!  It was fairly easy to seize the rope on the Tiller while it wasn't fixed but when I'd fitted all the blocks I used a little CA to hold the ropes together but when it came to seizing my big fingers kept getting in the way.  I can only hope that this process gets easier with practice.  Here are the photos.

As for detail, just trying to make it look authentic as I can. Which is a challenge at times with the scale at 1:60 !!

The mast collar were one of the few "metal" items I used from the original kit.

Hi Guys current progress is slow I'm afraid. I've set up and got to grips with my Airbrush and I was going to try it on a cheap Bluenose kit I have but then I thought better of it and decided to make all the small fiddly cleats and belays which has been fun.  I made some holders by soldering croc clips to brass wire.  I bought a large plastic box to house a turntable I've also made.  The Box contains the spray, which I have to say is much less than I expected and doubles up as storage for all the paint and paraphernalia.  I'm really pleased with it as the finish on the cleats etc is great.

I've been having a torrid time trying to create the Cutwater Braces etc for the bow as the plans and instructions are severely lacking (not for the first time!)  However, between McKays book and other builders on this site, notably Steve1234, I've managed to bring something together but it's still very much work in progress.  Also they say the camera never lies and seeing the photos I've got quite a bit of paint to touch up.

The main and mizzen shroud lanyards are eventually made off and the excess trimmed.

Since the bowsprit is now in position I rigged the bowsprit shrouds and bobstays.

In the pic above the boomkins are dry-rigged just to check the fit.  They won't be staying there until the time comes when I'll have to fit them. They look so fragile and vulnerable sticking out the front and they're now back in the 'safe box'.
(The 'safe box' is so safe that a few things that have been hiding in there for a while are no longer 'findable'  and I have had to make replacements -- I have no idea where the originals went!)
    O.K. ~ I'll be off now, I think I hear the foremast shrouds calling . . . . .
