John Allen reacted to Yambo in sharpening stones which are best for the price
I have much the same as Gaetan suggests but I have to admit I bought the diamond plate to keep the water stones flat. I use it as first stage for everything now!

Chris,
That will be a great shop when you're done.
My shop is roughly 10X14 which is a spare bedroom next to the master bedroom. Keeping dust to a minumum in the rest of the house is a priority . Having said that... I use a heavy duty (somewhat) shop vac and it seems to work very well. When I use a machine, I move the vac to that machine. As space is a premium here, I can't put in a dedicated system with associated plumbing. I also run air purifier pretty much everyday and it also traps a lot of dus
Here's the shop vac I use: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Shop-Vac-5-Gallon-5-5-Peak-HP-Shop-Vacuum/50159057
Here's the air filtration box I use: http://www.holmesproducts.com/deals/15-off-sale/holmes-allergen-remover-air-purifier-tower-with-true-hepa-filter/HAP716-NU.html#start=5
I hope this helps.

Hi Alex,
the "Standart" emperial yacht is a beautiful and interesting ship.
Also very nice Photo documents that you have. I am amazed that she`s going to be in 1:48 scale. That will turn out in appr. 2,33 meter model-length !!
Am eagery looking foreward to your keellaying to watch this project under way and growing at your shipyard

Your work on this makes it one of the best scratch builds on the site. Methinks museum quality. This buds for you!

Beautiful wood and craftsmanship. I'd hate to see all that covered by paint, but that's my opinion.

Thanks to everyone for the positive feedback. It gives me great encouragement for further work.
I decided to make wales from separated parts. It took me about 40 hours to make and stick 4+4 wales nad 1+1 black strake .

Don't scrap it I had a cat knock over my HMS Vic breaking main top mast, When moving it around I broke off the bowsprit, I then broke off the upper most tops of all three masts at different times. which I had to cutaway rigging and redo. I was not happy with the ratlines and cut them all out and replaced. It would have been easy to toss it, this was hours and hours of work.
I could have done two builds of smaller ships for the amount of time. Upside was do you really want to toss it I think you will be proud of your patience to refit, and you will never wonder what if if you send it to Davey Jones Locker

thanks for the continued interest my friends. I was hoping I'd have something to report, but my projects took longer than I thought...I even put up the Christmas lights along the roof of the garage. I get to my desk........but besides looking in on the site.and news, I'd end up tinkering with an Adam west Batmobile I have sprawled in front of me {I have already done the Michael Keaton version}. today being a holiday.......nawwwww.......even a holiday doesn't prevent me from tinkering we'll see what I kin git done t'day
oh crap.......another design flaw! I suppose they could enter the sort area by walking over the hold before they opened it Michael.......or climb in from the dump ramps. I guess it would be one more thing, left to the imagination
Carl........your too much
well folks.......best get crack'in! have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

John Allen reacted to mtaylor in How would the ships boats or anything else that was heavy be brought on board or lowered off? (Edited by admin)
Les,
There's been a few topics on that that some searching should get you to. Basically, they used the main yards and the fore yards as booms with block and tackles. Pretty labor intensive work.

Kevin,
The boats would have been launched (and towed behind) prior to battle.

Each cannon was usually loaded through its own port, by rope slings from the appropriate yardarm or perhaps from sheerlegs, and then transferred to it's waiting carriage.

Here are two illustrations from 'Seamanship in the Age of Sail' by John Harland that explain the operation of launching a boat from the deck of a sailing ship.
This is an excellent reference book for those members who build models of wooden sailing ships and wish to understand more of their methods of operation and handling.

John Allen reacted to Omega1234 in SHADOW by Omega1234 - FINISHED - Scale 1/300 - Luxury 60m Mega Yacht
Hi folks
I'm back! Life's been really hectic over the past few weeks, which has meant that I've had little time for MSW, catching up with people's builds, or working on Shadow. Hopefully, things will ease off so that I can get back to some normality.
Anyhow, over the past few nights, I've kinda reached a milestone with Shadow - that being the completion of the construction of the major components of her superstructure. With that milestone behind me, I can now settle down to detailing her interior accommodation and the myriad of above-deck details. Fun times ahead!
I hope you all enjoy the photos as much as I'm going to enjoy catching up with everyone's build logs!
Cheers
Patrick

Hi folks!
Just a quick update on Shadow.
I've been concentrating on getting the external superstructure built. So far, most of the general shape is there; well enough to see the beauty starting to come through.
Still heaps to go, but time's been limited lately.
Hopefully, I'll be able to get more time later.
Have a great weekend!
Cheers

Here she is lined up with the keel and all glued together. You can see the material that needs to be removed with the dremel the rest is ezpz!

Another quick point im using the flat edge to create the keelson edge. Then sanding away and down if that makes sense.

Thanks Mark! It came from the kit. I'm debating whether putting it through the laser was even necessary since as you saw the keel
s via the plans came out just fine (and the bow part was shaped funny). That deck also came from the kit as an etched veneer you can just slap on. The deck lines are worth saving though I plan to do the deck planking with strips but will use the resized image as a guide.
Again I've debated on whether to put this log in the kit or scratch section. Sultana honestly is 90% scratch this one is like 99.9% lol
