Great to see you and Daria able to make progress again. The ship is looking fantastic.

I also like the view from your windows. I looks like you have found a very nice place to live.

There may be a bent railing or leaning stanchion here and there if you look hard enough but I wonder how the real ship looked after a few fast turnaround winter Russian  convoys, getting beat by waves higher than the ship and beating ice off of the upper superstructure with axes and hammers! That's to say nothing of coming along side a tanker and refueling and the possible damage inflicted to more delicate parts of the ship.

I still say she is looking as she should and that is good!

Just felt like painting the ship, I like the 'pose'. Good practice for filling in the bits you can’t see, all about suggestion. I wasn’t paying attention when rigging the foremast, however if you don’t know Trawlers you probably won’t notice.

Just stumbled on to your log. How wonderful to build this model together! Terrific work, Daria and Mike!

The apartment move is over, so we are finally back to modelling!
Hull sanding took a while, and it was a big lesson about patience and persistence.

To make sure that planks would not start peeling off - we used plenty of glue. Maybe too much, it took forever to get it out using a nylon dremel brush (did not want to apply any moisture to that fiddly planks, they are very sensible to it):

    Before sanding:

    After:

There are some gaps visible, probably due to wood shrinkage.
But we liked the process, good teamwork  And she loves making something smooth, even though it is hard to keep going without breaks.

I trimmed the plank ends, it was too risky to let Daria do it - they can chip out, it is easy to scratch the transom with a scalpel, etc. A mistake in this area would be hard to fix.

But the result is ok. I am not sure what I think about this ebony, not very familiar with the way it sands and scrapes, kind of course and shiny at the same time.

To those who gave likes, thank you and thanks for stopping by.

Lou, not even an air brush in this shipyard, let alone something as exotic as a hole mobilizer.

Mark, this ship is going in the water.  If it made the trip from England without sinking a pond should be a walk in the park (he said out of complete ignorance).

Carl, thanks for the idea.  Do you think I need that much for a hole that’s not much bigger than 0.020?  I was thinking just a smear of body glazing putty.  My railing access is okay now that the upper decks are away on holiday.

Railings - bridge and top decks enjoying Mother’s Day

I swallowed hard and lifted the bridge/top deck assembly off to get access for the railing fab at the aft boat deck.  Turned out to be no big deal but I need to remember to be careful not to squash the wall railings during removal and replacement.  They are nice grab bars but don’t tolerate fat fingers.
The aft railing terminates at each side of the aft boat deck stair, terminates at the other ends with a short return near the davits and wraps around the aft bridge columns in between.  To get the location of the return I set all the boats in place to determine the available spacing between boats.  The other reason for knowing the spacing is to install the short railing sections between boats.  A photo of the short sections shows them about 8 feet wide but I had to reduce it to about 5 ft since the kit boats appear to be a bit long compared to the real.  I fabricated a couple of short sections and set them in place with a few davits to see how it will look.

Of course I managed to add to my stash of extra holes when I set the drilling template too far aft for one of the short sections.  By the time I’m finished I’ll probably have enough extra holes to do the next ship without any drilling.

I installed the two propulsion shafts, made of 4 mm brass tube. The sacrificial anodes have been applied to the shaft holders as well as some more PE rivets around the stuffing boxes:

With this, I am coming pretty much to a conclusion about what can be done on the stern section. Introducing the diving planes and rudders would be foolish at this stage, as they are by far too fragile.

Nice to see you were able to do the work you hoped to get to Carl. Looks like you haven't lost your touch, the railings are all nice and straight and the jackstaff and flagstaff are just right.

Me thinks you need to get some spectacles, mate ... there is enough room for improvement on that wobbly line, an' please don't gimme that crap about being my worst critic ... on the other hand, most ironbuilds are fitted with the PE railings (but for RGL's) and those do look really artificial

These are the 3-D printed parts I designed for Speedy which will be resin cast to keep the detail and proper size, 4-Pounder and half-Pounder barrels and small main bitt winch (There is a photo etched part that fits into the end of the smaller barrel):

I would like to see that much extra as well. BUT $200,000 can go all to quickly also!  I do admit it would be fun for at least a little while though.
