lmagna reacted to Overworked724 in Sultana by Overworked724 (Patrick) – FINISHED - Model Shipways – Scale 1:64 – Solid Hull – First Wooden Model Ship
Breakthrough!!!! I finally got my technique down for making a decent boom rest (wrap around) for the main mast!
In truth, the process is easy...just needed to step back and rethink it. Used a compass and a 1/32” basswood sheet. Cut the inside out, then filed to fit the mast, followed by trimming and rounding the outside edge. Eureka!!!!

I know that the brass is pretty but, they still look better somehow painted when they are in their proper place. Kind of like brass cannons just don't look as good as blackened cannons on period ships.

I build launch ways. They are sturdy, the model is very stable and removable.

I think the cat is probably smarter than the dog and keeps playing him as a sucker then sits back and gets a good laugh. It is kind of becoming my favorite indoor pastime watching to see what trick the cat is going to play on him. Kind of like The Three Stooges he keeps coming back for more! They are a riot. You could be right though the dog may just be another squeaky toy as far as she is concerned.

Thanks Orlin
On this model painting is a requirement rather than an option as there is so little known about the Providence that almost 50% of the authenticity that makes her THE "Providence" is the colors. Thankfully I won't have to copper the hull. One researcher suggested that the reason she was so fast was that she had a copper bottom but I pretty much discounted it as there is virtually no supporting evidence.
Works for me John. Mosquito's bite A LOT more people than Grizzlies do! Besides we don't have Grizzlies here in the PNW. At least none that anyone has found. But then they can't find the Sasquatch either.
There won't be a second planking below the wales. Above the wales is a plywood piece that will have to wait until the deck is planked, and it will be planked both inside and out.

@mtaylor
Dear mtaylor,
My wife doesnt have one.But last time I was planking I "borrowed" one from my daughter ..... as she found out 😰 wuao she was going to kill me!😁🤔
So I think I better buy a proper one.

lmagna reacted to MESSIS in Anyone using electric plank bender?
@lehmann
Yes dear lehman you are obviously right
.The thing is that you first got to have a soldering iron (I do have one) and then you have to have a round piece or a cylinder or something, which youll be able to attach well on that iron So I mean the investment for a new e-bender (€ 20-30) worths the inconvinience even of having only to modify a device you allready have. I think so... . though its very correct all what are you saying.
Thanks for sharing this.

I'm one of the curling iron brigade... have two old ones from the Admiral, a 1" and a 1/2" . They seem to work pretty well. If you're frugal (ok... cheap like me) you sometimes can find them at 2nd hand shops or garage sales.

Timberheads completed, just a layer of black paint is left. Usage of pins appears to be really good move. Most likely without pin, timberheads will be very fragile parts. I have left few spares (with inserted pin) just in case something gets horrible wrong..
I have made plenty of plan copies so i can cut it and trace to the timber if needed. I had to make two holes in stem (not quite sure what technical term will be for these two holes), cut and traced the shape ..
.. with a needle point tool made marks on the stem and then drilled holes with 0.44mm. First with 1mm drill bit and then with 1.3mm the holes were widened. A bit of file sanding and work completed.
On this picture it is better visible that length of the stem is not quite appropriate and extra patch will be needed (or planing ahead and have longer stem at the beginning).
Cheek knees.. another small and tiny parts to deal with.. now, i red Chuck' practicum ahead of time. During the making process i broke three knees. Most likely the wood is either tiny or i was not following wood grain but i ended up using "laminated approach". I glued three planks (1x3mm in size) lengthwise (like this ---), then glued two planks on the top of it ( --) and two another planks on the bottom ( --) getting it all in layers.
This should be strong enough to take abuse by #11 knife and other shaping tools.. Since knees will be painted in black visible layers will not be an issue..
Started to carve...
Completed for today; tomorrow a bit more carving...
Happy modeling.

It would be much better to get them in one piece but i did not pay attention to that. Following kit plan to the letter get me to this stage and not reading Chuck' practicum ahead of building time, just added a bit of spice to it.
If i would do the stem again, i will make sure i have extra length. This goes into my building notes for future references.

Lou,
Haven't you heard the "Dogs have owners, cats have staff"? In your case it's possible that the dog is part of the cat's staff as a playmate.

I know what you mean Sam.
The first time I took my wife back packing there really was very little in the way of "Ultra light" gear. After I packed up the gear I needed for the two of us for two days my pack weighed over 70 pounds! While I was much younger than I am now I had not carried that kind of weight since I was in basic training in the Army! I made it but my legs were shot, and my shoulders were almost raw. A mosquito could have landed on the pack and I would have collapsed from the extra weight. I took the pack off and for the next hour I felt like I was walking on the moon! With the gear I have now days I can do the same thing and my pack is not even 30 pounds at the trail head!
I will try and get time to try out the iron as an edge plank bender, possibly Sunday, I'm booked up tomorrow with an event, followed by a bunch of honey-do's. Monday at the latest.

Hi Mark
I have used that method in stuff where I wanted to create a radius for a cabin wall or stuff like that. Works pretty well on plastic also.
My tighter bends in the wood strips, were not the edge bending needed at the bow, but were at the stern, where the wood needed to bend very quickly to meet the counter. On those bends I used an old pencil style 25W soldering iron and the bends were very easy to achieve. The only problem was that I had to move the iron fast or it would scorch the wood. This happened a couple of times anyway but some scraping with a thin blade took it off.
I tried the iron on the last couple of planks that needed edge bending on the bow but it twas too hard to control. I may have been able to use a hair curler like some people say they use, or possibly the Model Expo plank bender with the larger head but I don't own either so I finally chose the alternative method saving that particular battle for later.
Later, after switching to the alternative planking method, I though about a small portable steam iron I own and that it may make a very effective edge bending tool. It's of course flat, produces steam, and the heat is adjustable. I may just give it a try on an extra plank just for future reference.

I haven't raised them at all! The cat is about a year old and the dog is only four months old. they either are sleeping, getting into everything, or rough housing with each other all over the house. We are just here to feed then as far as they are concerned.
