Court fines you $100 for falling asleep at the wheel. The boat is coming along nicely!

Derek, nice job on the planking, I also noticed you were being judge by someone in the background.
Didn't know you invited Judge Judy for inspection of your build.

Derek - Among the many reasons I really like kits designed by Chuck is how he handles the Rabbit. As I mentioned this was my first build. and when I was cutting the rabbit the first time I went all the way thru to the other side. MS had to send me another keel. Also being my first build I wasn't sure how deep to make the cut. and I also use the same clamp you do and it was very weak.
I have another suggestion for you. Some years ago someone showed me his hull "clamp". He took a large sock. Like a hiking sock that was almost knee high. He filled it with rice. and then used a zip tie to close the end. As you can tell this was a very expensive tool and if you create a pair of them you can get it to just about any shape you want. The Admiral will be very happy you did not take one of her pillows and impressed how frugal you are.

Derek, I've just finished reading your Mare Nostrum log, and then this one. I really appreciate the 'warts and all' approach you have; you don't try to hide anything, and I'm learning a lot from your travails. Sorry that I don't have any brilliant advice to offer, but I just thought you'd like to know that your logs are really helping some people.

Looking forward to seeing that deck finished. And noting (want to say, "filing away") your method of cutting scuppers

I know this might sound harsh, but the ship is/was just some sort of folk art. Not worth anything appart from it makeing a nice mantle piece. That said, i would not hesitate to try to restore it myself. I know i did something like that too. My and the Admiral used to go to local car boot sale. I walked pass that one boat so many times, its been made for a kid surely as rigging is just sewing thread, the only sail is attached to two spars(one bottom one top) and dont even let me start on the planking... no curves, just angles... so i obviously didnt want it as i walked pass many times. But the admiral noticed my obsession with all things nautical and her being her good heart she got it for me. I was just like why on earth would you buy this piece of rubbish... when i saw how saddened she was with my reaction i changed tone and went on to fix it. And you know what? I actually had fun. It was a nice little project, that got me back to modeling, as i had one of those periodes when i could not be bothered to do anything.
so all in all, even it looks like crap and people will probably tell you dont bother, please do. If nothing else, for the experience. And for the fun too.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes. What a great group of folks!
Hey, Dilbert I named dropped the Corel Sloup hoping someone might say it was OK for a beginner. Thanks for that. I'll check out the links. When I'm not doing what I enjoy then I'm often reading about it.
Dr. Per, I'm quite interested in knowing more about the club. Maturin is too. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
My tag line going in: Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want

Greetings, All
Checking in to say hello. I'm semi-retired, like Shaunzy, and I can't wait to start modeling again. The Admiral and I are selling our house of 20 years, so no model-making for me until we get that settled.
Most of my wood modeling has been w/ stick and tissue gliders, but boats and ships were my favorites in plastic. I grew up around Lk Washington and I spent a lot of time hanging around the marinas, this at time when tugs were pulling logs to mill and mine sweepers were moored nearby. I've been drawn to working boats ever since. My choices for first build are the Chesapeake Bay Flattie and the Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack. (I followed Popeye's and Greg Spring's builds from each.) I'd really like to tackle the Corel Sloup, but suspect the planking might be a bit much for a first timer. Looking forward to connecting w/ you all.
Best regards,,

Hey, Shaunzy
Welcome. I'm in the same boat--same age, semi-retired, and looking to start my first build. I'll keep my eye out for your building log.

basswood will give you a somewhat rough finish......but if your looking for a look that's a bit more weather worn, try Obetchi. might be a strange wood to do an outer planking with, but it has a very rough finish in it's raw state. sanded down when planked, it will smooth out, but it will retain the striated grain look. Billing Boats sells it......other kit manufacturers may supply it as well in some of their kits. super job on your first planking...looks great

Welcome aboard Mark. While you are waiting to get into your new shipyard, take a look at the framing and planking guides and tutorials available in the forum (link below). There are some very good You Tube videos in there. You'll need to decide which method and tools you prefer to bend planks and there are very experienced members here (not me ) who will be happy to answer any questions you have. I'm on my 3rd build and don't think the Corel Sloup would be too much for a first timer who's done this homework.

Mark,
Now I truly can say ,
I am also part of a modelclub in Seattle, well put it Northern Seattle but still.
We are meeting once a month, I am more than happy to help you connect with our president.
As for the sloup, I don't think you would have any issues with that kit.
We all beginners is various stages, and no question will be left unanswered.
A song popped into my mind, an old disco song "We are family"
Text has been altered.
We are family
I got all my siblings with me ( I had to change the text here, from sisters to siblings as we are a group both of women and men)
We are family
Get up everybody and build
We are family
I got all my siblings with me
We are family
Get up everybody and build
Everyone can see we're together
As we build our ships
(And!) and we glue the stick together
I won't tell no lie
(All!) all of the people around us they say
They are building ships
