Hello my friend, thanks for the BD wishes. Just trying to get caught up on all the logs. The floor looks terriffic but should have known....you built it...outstanding and all is looking good.

After considering several methods of creating the Great Cabin floor, I decided to use Chuck's method.  In my experience, doing so is never a bad idea!

The floor will be made from walnut and boxwood 3/16 x 1/32" strips.  A paper template of the area to be covered was made and a piece of 6 x 6 x 1/32" plywood was used as the base.  First, the strips were cut to approximate length and glued to the plywood base:

The curvature you see is created by the camera.  Next, a jig was made in order to create 3/16" strips to be cut with an Exacto blade:

The individual strips were then cut:

The strips were offset and then edge glued together to create the pattern:

The paper pattern was then used to cut and sand the floor for a tight fit.  Here's what we got:

Finally, just some overall shots.  The floor was finished with natural stain, WOP for protection and Dullcoat to give a flat finish:

Although most of the floor will be covered by the (open) upper decking and deck beams, I think we have a nice overall detail.  I'm pleased

Will be closing the shop for the upcoming Holiday festivities (Happy Independence Day to all of my fellow Americans).  When we return, the strains of DECK PLANKING music will be heard in the Rockies.

Oh, we have just passed 600 hours into the build.

sitting on the deck, not glued yet...probably won't attach, until  all  the other parts are all built....then do it all at once knowing how everything fits.  That is the workbench, cooling tank, insulation boards, and rendering bin...

Hello my friend, I knew you could meet the challenge! Mines, and torpedo are awesome as usual. Congrats....we'll all have to think of some challenging projects for the finish! We are in Monterey, California today. Off to Carmel and Pebble Beach tomorrow. Hope all is well with you and Gwen. I've toasted a couple of Leffe Blonds your direction, but internet has been scarce on our travels, so you couldn't see me! Keep up the good work, and Papa would be and is very proud.

The shroud, deadeye, lanyard setup looks good. Very neatly done. That spacing jig is always a good idea.

The main mast (ha!  only mast) is now securely in place - no glue needed.

I had tied the shrouds to the top last week, and this week I got them secured to the deadeyes - nice and tight.  I'm still kind of unhappy with the deadeyes and the chains, but they are secure, and I've tightened them as much as I dare - making sure to keep the mast straight.

This first picture is using the wire jig to keep the spacing correct while seizing the shroud around the eye.

Next is either doing ratlines or working on the upper shrouds.  I'll study the plans tonight and see.

    Andy.

The mines look great Piet. The engravings too, one engraved pulley wasn't enough uh?  Thanks again buddy, although I do hope they don't stand out to much after they are inserted in the brackets. Imagine 200 hundred yeas from now, historians digging up the Dutch National Archives for the original drawings as to explain these strange markings on a contemporary model. That would be hilarious...

Thanks everyone for dropping by and your likes, it's really much appreciated.

Well, the mines are finally finished and painted.  Yuns are probably sick and tired of hearing about and seeing these buggers, well, so am I    On to other things now such as completing the torpedo loading gantries and dingy boom.

I managed to engrave remco's name in the 6 mm pulleys and his initials on a few of the 3 mm pulleys, really!  Some of them were not as good as most but it's the idea that counts.
I blackened the pulleys and some other hardware and painted all the pulley brackets licht grey and started to assemble the pulleys into them.

I also cemented both the forward and aft gantries to the deck.  Now it's just a matter of mating all the parts and pieces to where they are suppose to go.

This has been a very successful day and expect to have the gantries up and running in the next few days.

Here are a few pics to show today's progress on the mines and the pulley engravings.  No sense showing all the hardware because they haven't changed a bit from previous pics, only now they are painted.  I'll show it when the gantries are fully operational.

Here are the 6 mm pulleys with Remco's name engraved on them and only 2 of the 3 mm pulleys with his initials, which are hard to see under the glare but they are there.  Unfortunately they are all very hard to see after I blackened them, but rest assured that they are engraved.

I have loaded one mine in the bin and placed the other on the deck for show.  You can now also see the arming cable.  I thought to paint the fuse tips red for "danger."

Here is another view of the mines.

    Cheers,
