Well, I am currently in Clinton, Ct., and tomorrow will visit the Morgan in Mystic.  Update pictures will follow for the venture getting here, then I will post as many pictures of the real thing, the museum, and the models that I can take for reference for anyone interested in this ship.  I'm going to miss my friend Lester, who is an interpreter for the ship, as he is still a working stiff...lol., but seriously, he can't make it because he does have to work.  so I'm on my own, unlike the Constitution where I had Henry.  More to follow.....

There was a presentation movie going on where the really big model is.....it is about 10-12 feet long and about 7 or 8 feet tall.  Unfortunately most of the backstays have broken on it and some other rigging lines and they have not repaired it.  I couldn't take pictures because of the movie.

Colors.....a memorable experience for an old sailor to participate and witness aboard this mighty vessel as so many noble sailors and patriots have done in the past.....

    You are right, John.
Gives a whole new meaning to the term "Left him hanging out to dry".  Did you see any mangers on the foc'sle or did the meat just drop out of the sky?

Thank you Chuck for the black paint idea.  That's the kind of thing I usually think of when I'm rigging the backstays.  You're a Godsend.  It's now 'on the list'.

    Darn it, folks.......he's GOOD!

The lower decks arent really lighter.  What I meant was that the decks in general were lighter than the hull planking and some prefer to make them that way.  No distinction in the color between decks.   But,  mainly I wanted to suggest painting the sides of each bulkhead black opposite each other so they are more difficult to see when looking down the hatches.  Otherwise they may be more noticeable. Nice work so far.

And now back to our regular programming

She has 3 platforms to construct which represent the lower (sub-gun deck) deck.  They will be barely visible through some hatch openings.

Here is the completed first platform.  It is made of 23 planks of basswood, stained with a natural finish and given a coat of WOP.  The edges of the planks have simulated caulking using a #2 pencil on one edge only (I don't like the caulking too heavy).  I chose not to simulate the treenails on these lower decks.

Chuck states in the practicum that the lower decks were generally lighter in color then the main deck.  I intend to maintain that concept but we'll need to wait a while to see that effect (like about a year).

The planks for the remaining 2 platforms have been cut and will go in very shortly.

    John,
the really large model that you speak of was never completed by the builder (died, I think).

Grant, isn't that the truth. What an awesome site. I just almost did the same thing with Henry (popeye2sea) on the USS Constitution in Boston. Here I am from Texas meeting a guy from Boston and having the entire ship (a National Monument)to ourselves after hours and no one on board except us and the watch. What an event of a lifetime. And Henry was just like an old friend I'd known forever. Bringing people together with common interests from all walks of life and creating lasting friendships. How cool is that! All because of this forum and the wonderful people that are part of it! Next time maybe we can drag in Augie, and all the rest of the "Moose Crew" together and have a conventiion!!!! I am happy to hear you are enjoying your ventures also. Have fun.

Henry, thank you my friend, for the chance of a lifetime, to have that great ship to ourselves, and for your gracious hospitality. Meeting you was like seeing an old friend that I had known forever, and to be able to do this was an event that could never even fathom that I could do. Diane and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you again for your time and the wonderful tour.

Glad to hear you are fever free today and that you are following orders from Anja!

Here is a small picture to brighten your day.  This is the cooking hearth at a local Bed & Breakfast.  Ro (my Admiral) wants me to install one like this in our house....

    OK, they got me!

I arrived at Chatham station (UK) to meet Mobbsie for our tour of Chatham Dockyard, and was delightfully surprised to be met by Sjors and Anja as well. What a wonderful surprise it was too. We all had a great day at Chatham Dockyard where Mobbsie had arranged a private viewing of the model collection. What a treat! We were like kids in a candy store! Then we all came back to Mobbsie's place where his Admiral (Christine) had prepared a delicious roast dinner. We all ate and drank and told tall tales and true, amid much laughter. Had the opportunity to inspect Mobbsie's work first hand - and I have to say it looks even better in the flesh than in the pictures he has posted.

Sjors has already posted a few pics, but here is one of all of us. I'm the one looking like Santa Claus minus the red suit!

What a great example of the power of this forum, to bring together people from all over the world, and on meeting for the first time it's like we have been lifelong friends.

Thanks Mobbsie for arranging it all, and thanks Anja and Sjors for making the effort to come over for the weekend. And of course, thanks to Admiral Christine (C-in-C Home Fleet) for your gracious hospitality.

I also liked the brass cannons and would pay extra to include them in a kit. Maybe kit manufacturers could consider changing their business model to offer options. Standard kit includes white metal guns, option (1) for X dollars adds brass guns, etc. This may open another source of revenue to offer a list of various higher quality upgrades specific for the model being purchased.

The way I look at it, it's a small price to pay for a simple upgrade that does wonders for the final appearance.

    Hi Augie,

The cannons and figurehead look very nice. I will have to look on Chuck's web site to see if he has guns suitable for the Niagara.
