Welcome back to our crazy world.  I have studied many different kits, and I believe if I were to build this model I would choose the Model Shipways Constitution.  Depending on your skills you can really build a very nice replication of this famous ship.  There is also a lot of help available on this site.  As for tools, I'm a bit prejudiced as I am a Proxxon Dealer.  I truly believe no matter what brand that the DB-250 Lathe and accessories is a must for ship building.  I offer a combo deal on my website for the small wood lathe and all accessories.  Not trying to sell - just advising.  PM me for more information or check the website.

Hi Tim, I just saw the post and thought I would comment.  I am a member and sponsor of MSW as a Proxxon Dealer.  Mill choices seem to be made depending on the required work one expects to do with it.  The Sherline are excellent tools but pricey.  I've had both Sherline and Proxxon lathes and mills in the past and there are more accessories available through Sherline.  I've found that the Proxxon MF-70 could do everything I needed without spending so much for many tools I didn't need.  Being a Proxxon Dealer with many MSW members as clients, perhaps you could give me a chance to quote your tool needs.  PM me with a list.  If not, either tool would be an excellent choice.

Agree with the rest, it is only a question of cost. If one can afford Sherline instead of Proxxon - there are very few reasons to advocate for Proxxon (well, maybe speed, but that's it).
However, if cost is an issue, Proxxon seems to be on the level that is decent enough and problem-free.

But may I respectfully disagree with this note about the cutters?
The proxxon mill accepts cutters with the shaft diameter up to 3.2mm, so there are plenty of aftermarket bits that can fit into it. And even the proxxon cutters are quite strong and sharp, I abused them a lot and haven't managed to break even the 1mm one. I am talking about this cutter set:

Hello Art, this is a very good question. I have investigated both models, and recently finished the Charles W Morgan which has 7 whaleboats. I have a good library on whaleboats. There were many variations of these boats as they were basically expendable. The Model Shipways to me seems to be the best choice, and the details are up to you as to how detailed you want to build it. I have a section on whaleboats on my website with a page called "New Bedford Whaleboats" and also a build log from another modeler who is building the MS model. Personally, I would go with the Model Shipways, and it is built in the USA.

Hi guys, I served on the Kennedy from 69-72 EM3, E Div #3 Engine Room.  I looked for years for a model and never found one, even tried to convert the Tamiya Enterprise, but never finished it.  There is a Chinese company unfortunately that makes one now in 1:350 scale.  You might also be able to convert a 1:350 Nimitz since they are kinda...sisters..sort of.

Well, my belt sander came in Friday and I've completed the base, mounted the ship to it, and I have a 3/16" scale Sperm Whale that I sculpted to go alongside the ship along with a fully fitted out whaleboat complete with sails. the whale has been harpooned and lanced and tied alongside. I am now officially finished. The base is a slab of wood cut from the Bowsprit of the real Morgan, obtained from the Dupont Preservation Shipyard, Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT., rough finished and Satin Varnished to protect it.

    I'M DONE!

Anyone interested on the steps to accomplish this can find all the details in my website BUILD LOG - PART VI at the bottom of the log as well as a lot of photographs.

Hi George, I do not intend to cut and trim it, only to sand certain areas with a belt sander and keep it relatively rough and irregular, highlighting the light and dark areas on the outside surface, with the flat sanded surface to the bottom. I did this to make a mantle at a previous house with Mesquite wood. It is a real unique look and irregular....not the normal base for ships. It'll look a lot like a dark moderate sea with some wood colors coming out of it.

I almost forgot the Flags....Got them done today. The American Flag w/26 stars and the J&R Wing Co Flag (they owned the ship for over 50 years) on the Main Mast. Now she's done...I also fixed my scratch on the hull. The flags have a piece of aluminum foil inside them and I am going to attempt to gets some furls in them hoping the foil will hold them in place???? They were tricky to make since they are not part of the kit.

Hi guys, I just wanted to post an update for any one who might be interested.
Even though I am still working on downsizing and liquidating my collectibles, which as of 9-8-2016 are still available, I still have the urge to build something. I have had the kit for the New Bedford Whaleboat by Model Shipways for a while now,  and I have decided to go ahead and build it too.  I have started another Build Log page on my website to document it's construction.  I probably should have done this prior to building the whaleboats for the Morgan so I would have had a better understanding and appreciation for what these little boats meant to a whaler.  I wasn't sure I was going to even attempt building this especially after making 7 boats for the Morgan and when finished with them I was burned out with the duplication.  The model can also travel with me and I can build it in my 5th Wheel much easier than a full size scale ship model.  To go to the log use the link below and  maneuver around to the page:  "Build Log -A- My Whaleboat".  I'm doing this build on my website to complement it and not wanting to duplicate it here as there are already several great build logs.  Anyone wishing to follow my whaleboat build please use the below link.

Hope all is well with everyone,
    John

Well, I have returned home and re-opened the shipyard. So far, all I've been able to do is set up the Morgan on the workbench TV tray and set the whaleboats on the boat bearers to see how they look and take pictures. I'm waiting for a new drawplate that is larger than the Barnes to trim down the small dowels I have to a smaller diameter for the oars and harpoons. It should be in next week, then I'll start making the parts. The Barnes is too small a diameter for what I have. Here are the boats sitting on the boat. They are tilted too far outboard so that they won't fall off. The proper stance is to be attached to the blocks on the Davits and have a natural "hang" and then they are lashed to the Boat Bearers.

Hello guys, I'm back in Texas.  I'll be working on updates shortly.  We have to go down to Mercedes, TX for some dental work, so I'm actually not really home yet.  Just a brief note, I received a backorder from Proxxon for extension beds for the DB 250 Wood Lathe.  I had many inquires for these and special ordered them from Germany and they arrived last week.  I'm offering these to my MSW friends on a first come first serve basis.  I had 5 available, but now have only 4 available since one has already sold.  Based on past interest I expect these to only last a few days, so if you need one please act quickly.  Check it out if you have an interest.  Here's the link.  More on the Morgan to follow shortly.

Managed to get the first boat finished today (6 more to go). It is one that will mount upside down on the Shelter Roof, so not much details other than on the exterior. this one has a blue stripe on the side. Each boat had a unique color so they could be easily identified and monitored from the ship as they were either catching or chasing a whale.
