Grant, I am afraid that may be your order ID. I looked at mine and have 3 different numbers - assuming we are looking at the same thing. And I see I let my membership lapse for a YEAR!!! Shame in me!

Nothing wrong with posting an idea in my book John. As long as people can discuss it like adults. Its when the name calling and such starts that it becomes a problem. I was actually for your idea until some others posted the potential down side.

I am with Chuck, Mark and Brian, I got into this hobby when I was unemployed and looking for something to keep me sane in what I thought would be a long search for employment. Had I been shuffled off to the newbie section I doubt I would have been exposed to the other more skilled builders here, some of whom have inadvertently nudged me into the world of bashing and scratching (sounds like a disease dont it?) Now I have pretty much thrown caution to the wind and am scratching my own masts, I dont think I would have ever attempted that with out looking over the shoulders of the more experienced and the guidance and input of those who stop in to say hey. Are my masts 100% correct? He!! no, but I am having fun.
Ok, back to building my Cross and Trestle Trees, for the 3rd @&@%#$ TIME!! :P

I found the email receipt for my Enterprise......2009!! There have been a lot of reasons why its taken so long; health, end of a relationship, a death, start of another relationship, work. The big one for me is I cant leave well enough alone and have to keep fiddling with things. Then there is that short attention span.

As far as why others fail to finish? I suspect there are as many reasons why builds and build logs are abandoned as there are builders; time, money (tools) skills, poor instructions, overestimation of how long it will take etc etc. Keeping up a build log takes time and effort. By the time I have taken and edited pictures, written a post, edited and re-edited (Gods of Spell Check I thank you) it could be an hour or more. thats an hour that could be spent building. I imagine some decide its more effort than it is worth to them.

When it comes to helping others pick a first build all we can do is give anecdotal advice and hope they listen. When they (ME?) dont then give as much advice and encouragement as possible. I know I most likely would not continued with out all the advice and encouragement I recieve(d)

    grant,
This is such a cool project. You have a talent for finding interesting and unusual projects. The knots are a nice subtle addition as is the wire brush graining. I have done this look on full size projects with a torch and brush or even sand blasting. Its cool to see how to do it at a smaller scale.

    Cisco,
Well done on the hooked scarfs, the addition of the dust in the joint makes a big difference. When I cut the scarfs on my Enterprise I wish I had done something similar, other than on the transom all that hard work has disappeared.
Agreed on the use of hand tools, I love watching what others are doing with laser cutters and 3d printing, but for me I need the feel of making dust myself.

I agree with your choice of "less is more" with the nail holes.  I also love the ragged edges of the board ends.  So well done!!

Shipbuilding is suffering due to a deck rebuilding project.

Replacing 1 x 6 with 2 x 10..  Shouldn't have to do this again for another 30 years or so..
The old 1 x 6's were nailed, so the demolition is 90% of the work.

hi Sam.......yes,  there is a slimming down towards the bow.  it's too bad that the bow section was already cemented in place...........I don't want to remove it for fear of damaging it,  and it would have looked nicer if the chain detail was addressed.  I thought about how to do it,  but I might just scratch it and leave it as is.......just touching it up in paint.   so........the base has been clear coated with lacquer....I gave it two coats.  I probably should have gone over it with steel wool,  but it wasn't too bad so I didn't.

I turned around and got another can of red primer to do the bottom paint.  it's not as perfect as I would have liked,  but it renewed the paint and got rid of all the scratches and chipping.

there is some degree of fading along the sides....not intentional and I left it 'cuz it adds to the aging aspect.   the next step was to mount it on the base.........that went well,  so you will likely see me do this again

I still need to touch up the waterline and the upper section of the hull,  but these are minor and won't be hampered with it being mounted.  I put CA on the nuts inside so they won't back off as I work on it.  I did make a adjustments to the spreaders,  ending up with only using two.  the deck fits on there much better,  and that will be the next step.

Ca will be used here so they don't move.  this is where she sits now......it's a big relief that I was able to pull it off with the decks already on the model.  a couple of bollards have a 'horn' broken off {I noticed}....shouldn't be too big a deal to fix them.  more soon!

    Popeye,
    That looks really good.
Is it the camera angle or does the main deck become narrower about the Fore Castle?
