    Guess What???

    IT'S NOODLE TIME

I bought this having an idea for something, not knowing wether it would work or not.  So far it seems to be working fine..........

I cut a section of the noodle of and using 3M spray adhesive attached different sand paper to it. It can be change out easily with another if needed.

Here is the smaller 80 grit using it on the spacer after the drum sander on the dremel

Here is a slightly bigger one with 100 grit sandpaper. I cut an old broom handle and inserted it through the hole in the middle for better gripping.

This seems to work fine. With the bigger diameter of the noodle, I will have a better chance of not sanding flat in the frame sides.

One of the most USEFUL tools I ever bought was this reeving tool for deadeyes. I have used this many times over the years and still use it. It makes rigging deadeyes a snap.

    Just an update here.

I have replaced the limber boards with new ones and have drainage holes on them. I think they look okay. Also I have now finished all the toothpicks (treenails) to this point and have applied one coat so far of Antique Oil to the planks. Will have about 3 or 4 coats in total.

I have also decided to redo my deck beams. They were made of Douglas Fir and now they will be made of Oak. The Knees and Carlings etc. will also be of Oak. The Douglas Fir in my opinion is too soft to use, the Oak will be better for the joints. Working on cutting the knees etc. now and sanding and setting the camber on the new beams. Will update later.

Checked on the second batch of bending the beams. They turned out okay.

Meanwhile, marked the treenails holes (360 holes).

Drilled 180 holes by hand and installed natural colored toothpicks in most of the holes. Toothpick forest. I'm almost halfway on the treenails...

Will be installing toothpicks for a while and then sanding them all down flush. Will take a while.

Found out that my frames are made of Oak and the planking is Douglas Fir. The wood was from an old recliner that was taken apart. Meanwhile, my neighbor has given me some solid maple and some nice looking Yellow Cedar. He says that I can get all the wood off of him for free, he is a cabinet maker.  Cool. I like saving money.

Mark mentioned in his Bellona post that he had had some difficulties aligning the strips of gratings during assembly using the traditional technique. I've attached a few photos of a simple jig I made to keep the grating ledges in alignment while gluing up the gratings.

The jig consists of a square of wood with slotted recesses for the ledges.  On two sides stops were added.

The gratings ledges are placed in the slots.

The battens are now glued in place. I use dilute white glue as they are a press fit.

The assembled gratings are removed. The round up has yet to be added.

Just a little more to post at this time. I have been cutting my lumber to size for the planking and such and have the beams cut to size.

I made a little bending jig by gluing the frame drawing to a piece of wood and hammering finishing nails along the beam edge and then I soaked the beams in hot water for about an hour and mounted them in my bending jig. I will let them dry for a day or two before removing them from the jig. I think it will work just find. When that is done I will repeat the whole process for another set. Thanks to Snowmans idea.

Hope I don't get any mold on the wood or I will have to do the old bleach trick on them.

Well, back to work, still making planking..

I have soaked the wooden toothpicks in Dark Walnut stain for a week now and just looked at them today. It seems that the stain has soaked right into the core of the wood.

I might end up soaking a bunch and use them in my build. Haven't decided which way to go as yet. Natural or dark?

While the toothpicks were soaking I worked on my frames. Which in my opinion are not very good, but I will be using them the way they are. You can see where I filled in the gaps with a sawdust-glue mixture and some other sloppy areas. But, overall I think they will work and I think I will not have any of the frames showing in the end product.

Sorry for the quality of the pictures, taken with my cell phone.

I have also cut some lumber for the inside planking and have my beams cut. I will be soaking the beams and bending them soon. After I do some inner planking and treenails of course

    That's it for now.

Thanks for the tea idea. I will have a cup while I think about it.

I mounted my frames today and decided to do the treenails on them using plain old wooden toothpicks.

    Frames mounted.

Treenails installed by freehand. Not to good. But, they won't be visible later.

Sanded down and ready to mount the Keelson.

More pictures to come after I do a little more work.

It depends of the width of the planks.
For the planking of the hull I found: if the planks are less 8'' width there is one treenail, if the planks have a width greater than 11'' there are 2 treenails
For the deck planking I found the following:
Planks less than 6'' width one treenail, all other two treenails.

Perhaps someone can verify this with another source.

Hello Ron.I have been playing with stains for the toothpicks.I had no luck with stains. So I thought that a tree contains a lot of water. Why not use water based dyes.I made up a very strong solution of" TEA".Four tea bags to a small amount of boiling water.I then added the toothpicks and covered them with the tea bags.I let them stand till they sunk to the bottom, water logged.Took about six hours.I reheated the water several times in the microwave.Let dry(add sugar and milk makes a tasty snack    )I think the wood stores have wood dyes and there is Rit Dyes if you need a darker color.I have not tried these.

    Daniel,
glad to be of help to you.
The gun assemblies are finally complete, time required:10 weeks. For a first attempt at this stuff, I'm  satisfied with the result. This model was supposed to be finished for my sons last birthday, I'll be lucky to finish in time for the next one. Still, haste makes waste.

I've been busy in the garage making sawdust with my home-built mini thickness sander. I had a setback when the sanding drum broke on me and I had to make another one. You always build a better one the second time around. As I mentioned before the wood is from an old recliner rocker that I ripped to size and then put through my thickness sander.

    Thickness Sander

Once I got the wood to the right thickness, I put masking tape on each piece.

I then cut out all of the frames template pieces and then ran some paper glue on top of the masking tape and laid out all of the frame template pieces on each board.

This is the glue that I used. I used masking tape on top of the wood so that after I cut the frame parts out with the jigsaw and sand them to the proper shape, I will be able to just peel the masking paper off and leave clean bare wood. No scraping glue off of the wood I hope.

Here is a picture of all the frames template pieces laid out and glued onto each board ready to be cut.

    Closeup of same.

Well that's all for now. Next step will be to cut all of the pieces out and do some sanding and then make the frames. I will post as I go along.
