today......it was the upper hull that got focused on. I need to mix a special black, according to the TRMA site
I had noticed that there was raised lettering where the name should be. I trimmed it off and sanded the area
the final hole was drilled through the pedestals. they are ready to paint.
I didn't want to use Testor's gold for them.......it would be too shiny. I decided on the Billing's gold paint. after they were dry, gave them a coat of dull coat.
the props were painted with it as well. I'll later give them some green patina....perhaps a touch of flat black.
now......I wanna warn you...the next two pictures will scare you {they did me}. I had mixed light gray and a touch of med green to what was left of the flat black I had on the table......until I had what matched the last example on the chart. I took these with normal light,,,,I think the camera adjusted it as well.
I thought I had painted it with battleship gray.....or something! it had time to cure when I put on the overhead crane light for these next photos. I felt better about it when I saw them
I did a little bit more to the cranes.........work in progress

Tuesday, I began work with the bottom paint. I kept my fingers crossed I was right about the spray primer.
it wasn't........I did a review of the color chart on the TRMA site.
it seemed a lot redder and flatter, than the rustoleum example. I added some light brown to it, and fiddled with the paint I had decanted into a 1/4 oz bottle....I knew where I'd be going with this. especially when I saw how this paint looked, after I had touched up one of the screw tunnels.
I lost some of the red tint, but I got closer to the rustoleum......and the Floquil examples. the only thing to do now, is touch up the other tunnel, and paint the entire bottom.

Ditto on what Patrick said Bob! There's still quite a bit of talent there as far as I can see!

Bob,
You haven't lost your touch at all from what I can see.

Hi Bob
Love those eggs! Apart from what Carl said above, there is no doubting the talent and skill that you've shown with your models. I still look at your rigging and all the metalwork fixtures on your masts and hulls and shake my head in the knowledge that I'm nowhere even close to meeting your standard. So, yep, without a doubt, your models are a cut above the rest as far as I'm concerned!
Hi Carl- I've sent you a PM.
Cheers and all the best
Patrick

Bob,
That first set is increadible, the second ... I wouldn't be able to do that either ... I have to admit that the finess and sharpness does diminish when age increases ... however, isn't it the joy and pleasure we find in building models which are the motivation to do so. To strive to do as best we can... I've seen my father drawing all his life, even in his last lucid moments, untill his death last Sunday morning ... he continued drawing because he loved to do it, even if that sharpness faded ...

It will be a two part mould because of the shape of the hull.

Hello everybody,
At this moment I have done a lot of work for this model allready. Lots of work will not be vissible when she is ready but is inevitable to get a realistic model. But how good is the feeling when you have (after all the work) a fysical hull in your hands wich look svery good. On the pictures you see the wooden model of the hull. They call this the plug and I will use this in the future to make a polyester mould arround it so I can make multiple hulls out of it. I do this because I want to make two of the same models and maybe I can sell some hull later to other modelbuilders.
The pictures
The templates are ready to trace them on the wood
The wood (triplex 3,5mm)
All templates traces on the triplex
The gluing of the longitudinal cross-sections. I pay attention that they are on the correct line and place according the drawings.
And here all the sections together and the top-part glued in places
And then with the help of several powertools and a lot of sanding by hand sanding the shape of the hull. I have to do this very carefull so I wont sand to much. Most of the finishing I do by hand because you have more feeling and it gives a better result.
(Okay I admit. The sander was not even turned on. My wife made an ACTION-picture. But you can see I lost weigt tough )
And then after a lot of sanding and filling (lots of times) you see the result. Its nice and smooth and ready for further finishing.
Thank you for watching, like-ing and reply-ing. The build is on and more updates will follow soon!
Kind regards, Kees

Fam,
You are doing very well, both in model ship building as in English!! Sorry to hear you have to do without for such long periods. Take care!!

Jay,
Wonderful work, not to say craftmanship. She really looks superb ... but what else could you expect from a born and bred 'Rotterdammer' ...

OK I've got it now...
I'm sorry but my knowledge of English language does not get to these levels ;-)
I've plenty of them in my tools box, probably one of the most useful and flexible tool in my entire inventory!!
In the meanwhile I've got a PM even from Chuck, also suggesting to take pictures of the upright hull, directly from the side, from the bow and from the stern.
I will, as soon as I go back home (one entire month... how can I resist so far from my toy??! :P ).
Thank you very much and bye
Fam

Hello Nils,
thank you for your positive response.
Currently I build the long boat for the French corvette. This is the largest boat of La Creole, with a length of 8.5 m.
The following pictures show the first work steps:

cog reacted to Dan Vadas in Cutter for HMS Vulture by Dan Vadas - FINISHED
Thanks George, Mark, Russell (you didn't have to wait long ) and Janos .
Ribs
I used the plug to form the 1/32" square ribs, once again using Tamiya tape to hold them in shape while they dried. The Tamiya tape holds onto the resin plug very well, and is easy to apply using the tape holder/cutter. The tape is 1/4" wide :
A couple of hair clips hold the rib in position whilst the glue dries :
The aftmost rib. The tops of the ribs will be trimmed when they are all fitted :

Planking
As suggested in the instructions I've planked the hull of the cutter without the ribs - they'll go in later as most of them would come off the planking when the hull is removed from the plug. This pic was taken with a couple of runs left to do. I'm using Tamiya masking tape to hold the planks in position while they dry :
The cutter removed from the plug. It came out very easily :
Some pics of the outside. The planks need a "rolling" bevel both fore and aft to fit to the stem and transom :
There was very little excess glue inside the hull. These pics were taken before I started any cleanup :
You can see a couple of wedges in the bow which I inserted to ensure a tight fit to the plug. Isopropyl alcohol made removal of them easy :

She is finally finished.
It only took four years with major interruptions, to be sure.
After some minor repair work, adding the boats and making the mahogany base, I hoisted the flags and let her sails fill with our family room air.
One final touch will be a small brass plaque with the name and date mounted on a piece of the wood hopefully coming from our USS Constitution sailor friend. It will go inside the case in front of the bow.

Looks great Dennis. Whats you plan for the lighting? Any plans to light position lanterns/lights?
I would imagine there were outdoor lights for Leo and Winslette to take a romantic stroll at night. Some fiber optics maybe?? I'll go back to my corner now.

Oh, I'm sure he'll add the glazing. The real challenge will be the brass porthole rings.
