The New Year brings with it ....... a small update!

There are two bulkheads under the quarterdeck.  They are constructed from laser cut pieces and laminated:

Here they are, laminated and the blackened brass hardware affixed to the doors:

The farthest aft of the two encloses the Great Cabin.  It, in combination with the deck beams I've put in, pretty much covers the checkerboard floor.  But we'll still be able to see it as only 1/2 of the quarterdeck will be planked:

Another view, showing the first of the hanging knees installed:

There will be both hanging and lodging knees installed for each of the deck beams as we move forward.  I've installed wire inserts to simulated the bolts in the knees.

Here's the aft bulkhead taken from the front.  I've also added the mizzen mast cap, some eyebolts and the speaking tube (only temporarily).  It's made from painted brass tubing and extends up to the quarterdeck just where the ship's wheel will go.  I'm not sure what the helmsman would communicate to those down below but I can't shake the mental image of John Wayne at the helm bellowing down "Engine room, more steam".

We'll be moving forward now to install that second bulkhead.  But first some gangway railings and the capstan need to be installed.

Best to all for 2015 !

Part 102 – Planking and Wales continued

With the announcement of the forthcoming book(s) on this model, I’ve got to keep my nose to the grindstone – giving up some of the leisure I enjoyed before making the book decision.  So much to do, so little time.

In the first picture the wale upper strake around the stern has been installed.

All of the wale planks are 6” x 6”.  This first strake transitions in thickness from the 4” common plank thickness.  In the next picture the first full thickness wale plank has been fitted around the stern and is being levelled off with a file.

Some of this levelling was required on all planking but especially around these curves.  The planks were slightly oversized to allow for this.  This wale plank borders right on the “knuckle” – a transition point in the aft hull shape.  Planking below this will butt into this strake as shown in the next picture.

The two strakes shown above will be pared down to half width after gluing.  There are chocks between the stern timbers to allow the ends of the lower strakes to be bolted.  Lacking documented practice, I have assumed that these planks would be cut into the last circumferential wale plank as shown below.

This was the common practice for the ends of planks that butted into another plank where the angle would require excessive tapering of the planks.  Maintaining a minimum of one-half the width and cutting into the margin plank as shown above would permit these joints to be caulked.  This could not be done with a full taper on the planks.

Additional planks have been added in the next picture.

In this picture the surface is being sanded with 220-grit paper in preparation for treenailing.  In the next picture additional strakes on either side have been boiled and clamped in place to dry.

These planks do not have the extreme curvature of the circumferential planks but do curve up at the ends and twist to follow the hull shape.

The last picture shows the starboard planking while the ship was uprighted for some dimensional checks – and for inspection by Christmas visitors.

A lot of exterior planking remains to be done – down below the waterline on this side and a few strakes below the channels on the port side.  There are about 20 strakes in the wale itself plus some diminishing strakes and common plank below that on this side.

Revenue cutters were fast because of the great spread of canvas they could carry, not because they were lightly built. They were rugged and robustly built, not lightly framed. I suspect 'double' framing was most likely. The dead flat distance might include part of the space as well as siding of the floor timber. I vote for your Option 1, for what it's worth.

Thanks all for helping me to sort this out.

Jan, 0,5 mm copper rod scored with a sharp blade made the screw head.

Sorry Grant, no way I can make working screws on this scale

So that said, the gudgeons are made, again from brass strip and bar silver soldered together and formed to follow the hull curvature. I'll probably use some castello shims to compensate for the missing hull planking. Some adjustments are still needed before I can bolt the gudgeons permanently to the hull. Somehow gudgeon #5 ended up under the transom planking

I checked all the scales against each other.  I made sure that all pdf's were printed at same 100%. Could have been that the last few frames from the basswood I milled was a little off.

Having said that, I did something wrong and will do a lot more inspection and spend more time with dry fitting.  This first go around was a familiarization and testing effort and I used basswood so no great loss.  The next build should be better.

I will post and we will see.

For now, I have to mill some Boxwood and Swiss Pear to get started.

    Thanks

I felt the need to post some pics to celebrate the completion of the gundeck 'treenailing'.The aft section still needs sanding smooth and I will then apply a coat of thinned poly to protect the deck during future work.A rough count up shows well in excess of 3000 fixings Some sanity has been retained thanks to the music of Vangelis and Hans Zimmer

    Kind Regards

due to the small boat fabrication there has been a Little pause in the rigging sequence, but now ist time to get the Yards and the square sails under process.....
Wish you all the best for your heath for 2015 and happy modeling with your "Triton"

First bit of planking is done with Swiss Pear.   Just the counter so far.  I've hung the stern post and rudder blank for position and to make sure I made the hole right.

There will be a bit of ebony trim over the exposed yellowheart after the rest of the planking goes one.  And "above" the counter and below the lights I'll be putting in the shaped trim strip after the rest of the stern has been planked.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased.

    Hi guys,

Well, after going through nearly all the stages of depression due to my illness, I am slowly getting back on my feet. Thanks first and foremost to the Lord Jesus Christ, in Whom I find my strength and salvation, and of course, thanks to all you guys who have given me support in one way or another

This ship is included in my bucket list so I figure it's time to devote a bit of time to the shipyard, which as can be seen, needs a bit of tidying up

Anyway, I thought I'd share what little I have accomplished these past several months:

First off, I encountered a slight problem brought about by my haste to get the hull done quickly

As previously mentioned, my hull is a combination of bulkheads that I made from the NMM draughts as well as from MSW plans.
Below is a printout of my CAD work showing the NMM plan juxtaposed to the MSW centerboard plan to illustrate the problem:

As can be seen in the close up, MSW bulkheads number 6 and 18 fall directly on gunports:

I had several options to solve this, but being the lazy guy that I am, I decided on the simplest one and that was to cut off the affected bulkhead extensions and just reposition  new extensions away from the area of the gunports:

I also managed do a bit of planking and used cherry strip to mark the sheer so as to make it easier to position the second planking later on. Cherry was also used to set the upper and lower borders of the gunports since I plan to use this wood for my second planking:

I've also been doing some CAD work for my stern lights and stern fascia:             Once I'm done test fitting/tweaking cardboard printouts of these, I plan to send the files to Chuck for laser cutting. He makes some beautiful laser cut parts as seen in the discussion below  :   http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/8923-laser-cut-deck-beams-from-syren-ship-model-company/?hl=%2Blaser+%2Bcut+%2Bdeck+%2Bbeams     Last but not least is the long and excruciating work that I've done during the Christmas holiday, and that was..... drum roll please........                             ....to frame a pair of gun ports       Now I just have to complete 24 gunports on the gundeck and 6 gunports on the quarterdeck, which should be finished in another year or so             That's it for now, thanks again guys

Thanks for dropping in again, and your kind comments John, Nils, Allan, Richard, Maury and Frank.

Richard, I'm not using a "professional" setup. I use a pencil torch from Bernzomatic, which uses butane. The solder paste is a medium melting point from Fusion.

Maury, I cut the plates to length after soldering and before drilling the holes.

    Ratlines

Time for the "fun" job of tying the lower ratlines. I printed out a spacing template using AutoCAD and taped it behind the shrouds :

The lowest 6 and uppermost 6 ratlines don't tie off to the outer shrouds. There is some minor adjusting to be done which I'll do when they are all completed.

I have all of the deck beams fixed in place. Need to give them a light sand then the deck will belaid on top andit will be all hidden. This has been a good practice for the top deck, I may leave this open to show some exposed beams. Will have to decide when I get to that stage, and see how good the joints are.
