Mirabell61 got a reaction from yvesvidal in Eagle of Algier 1753 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - 1:48 - Chebec - Nils Langemann
update...
cutting out the floor halves from 0,8 mm ply for the cargo hold bottom (still to be planked...), and attatching the brass M4 thread-plates under the floor for the stand`s two spindles..., also checking out the deck-supporting pillars midships...
Nils
card template halves... will do...
the threaded brass fastening plates are enbedded safely between supporting lugs...
dry fit of pillars, the floor halves can be slipped in through the frame deck-beams...
here one wooden floor half (with overlapping) braces in dry fit

Update...
put some more stringers on, mounted the fancy support brackets for the high poop-deck grating, and am shaping the card template halves for making the cargo hold floor. I think I need`nt remove the deck beams for doing so, the card templates and later the thin planked ply floor halves can easily be slipped in through the frames from above....

Peter,
I`m very pleased to welcome you to the Chebec. In the moment there is still a good drive at it, an looks like the fixture works well...
Build log part 2
setting up the frames /bulkheads with the keel. Unfortunately the outside contour straking can first be checked when the whole framework later on is removed from the fixture. But there will have to be fairing done anyhow. Perhaps I will add a minimum of stringers as well, in order to ease the planking later.
Nils
Keel is in place (not to be glued in)
glueing the paper bulkheads to the ply. The paper will be scraped off afterwards
8 layer ply was ordered but really came 10 layer, total 5,2 mm thick
up to now all is fitting well (in dry fit)

Introduction:
One of the ship types that I`m interested in is the Chebec design. As a model I did`nt want to get it too complicated and too much detailed like for instance the build of the "Le Requin" Chebec would be. So the choise fell on a scratch build model after a basic Amati plan 1:60, that would be enlarged by 25% to scale 1:48, resulting in a new total length of 900 mm.
To give the child / project a name, the ship will be "Eagle of Algier", and representing a (fictive) one one of those Mediteranian, North African fast trade- and pirate- Chebecs of the African Barbary coast around mid 18th century. It would have been "Falcon of Algier", if I were able to find a suitable falcon head for using as an appropriate figure head.
The ships boat will be a 27 Ft longboat / pinnace after F.H. Chapmans Chart PIXLI figure #14 (Architectura Navalis Mercatoria), scaled to 1:48
With this build I´ll be experimenting with the stand up mode of keel and bulkheads, positioned by a jig fixture, from which the framework can easily be removed afterwards.
Usualy I build my models in keel up position.
Because the "frames" will become quite fragile, due to thin sizes, I choose 5,2 mm thick ply for the bulkheads, but with 8 layers, (the delivered ply had even 10 layers !) to provide the required strength.
The bulkheads will be cut out to resemble frames, and the deck beams will be temporarily cut away in order to fit out the interior hull, then replacing the deck beams again afterwards. It is intended to do 1 layer planking of the hull outside shell only.
Enjoy...
Nils
already enlarged Amati plan by 25%
A building instruction with sequential pics, comes along in Italian / English with the plan
little paint can for scaling...
the name giving figure head (metal diecast)
cutting out of the paper bulkheads for further treatment
beginning the positioning gig for keel and bulkheads
fixture progress...
ships boat (may be subject to slight modification, to suit needs)

Looking good. Does the kit use filler pieces between the frames? I don't know why but I always get nervous with plank on bulkhead without some intermediate supports...

last update....
today the KWdG went into it`s glass case in my hobby room....
The shelf was lowered a bit in order to compensate the case hight, an with the admirals help the glass surfaces were cleaned inside / outside before closing the bonet and everthing was fitted into position. This now closes the project...

John,
Thanks for your appreciation on "Pegasus" John,
I have here a sample of where I hand-jigsaw-cut the vertical frames of "Pamirs" Jarvis three winches (0,8 mm brass sheet, and fine metal blade)

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. Now that there is some colour on the model, it really starts coming together. I just realized that there needs to be some white trim added to the hull and some decoration. I will start prepping that while I finish the decks. So much to think about and plan. Kinda fun really.

I used the Zinsser sanding sealer to prep the hull and get it nice and smooth. That took several coats, but with this scale of hull I wanted it perfectly smooth. Then several coats of Humbrol enamel paint were applied by brush. Finally the copper plates were applied to the hull. I picked up the copper tape from a shop that specializes in stained glass supplies. The roll of 3/8" tape is 36 yards and cost me about 20 bucks Cdn. That process was a bit of trial and error, plus more errors and some more trialling. But finally I had them all on to my satisfaction, Good from far, but far from perfect. Anyway, here are some pics of the process...

Mirabell61 reacted to DORIS in HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD
Thank you for your kind words and all the "likes", dear friends.
The cannons are finally placed inside the model; all are movable and able to adjust in height. Now the Royal Katherine looks much more like a warship.
Have a Happy New Year 2020 and plenty of health, love and joy.

Hello Jan,
yes, there is visible only front part of these cannons so I have decided not to make unnecessary details on their aft side. Some of them I even had to shorten because there are reinforcement and stiffeners inside the hull.
On the other hand, the cannons on upper decks will be made in great detail, because everything will be well visible.
