Hola Michael:
Sure, if I can help you in anyway don´t doubt to ask. All the stitches were made with my wife sewing machine after marking previously the lines. About your specific question, for that sail i didn´t put any reinforcement, but I put it at the foremast lower sail. (picture) I took several pictures of the sails and don´t remember which of them I sent it to you, please tell me if you want any in particular.
Saludos, Karl

Baskerbosse – thanks for your insights as well as taking the time to post- Very interesting. Your Vasa knowledge is appreciated.
Karl – may I ask for your assistance? I’m at the point where I need to decide on the sails. I want to try making some, and then decide if they will (in my case) improve on this build.
I have been looking at yours and Frank’s logs for ideas and help.
May I ask how you added that great detail? – see your photo. -Thanks in advance Karl -you are always so helpful.
Mates, as always thanks for your likes and visits.
Cheers,

Hi Mates,
Minor update–working on finishing up the first sail (lower main)
Then noticed (first pic of 1/10th) that a shoe block is used where I had already laced two deadeyes with a single block in-between.
PS: I know that you know where that is, just having fun adding red circles here and there……
Looked at Syren, and elsewhere could not find this type of block – so trying to make some. Prob. too much time spent here – may just use the single block instead. A work in progress ----======================
PS2: Joachim thanks for the post. I remember that extra extension. I saw it when I bought the lathe, but passed on it. I looked again at Proxxon and elsewhere no longer seems to be available (even eBay did not have one)
Cheers,

Hi Michael,
interesting making of your blocks.
The Proxxon-Part cannot be bought on a regular way, but you can write an e-mail to Proxxon service and ask for this as a spare part (the part no. of mine was 34114-2015). Then they give you an offer with a price and you can order it. Me and some of my collegues did it this way.

And here is my weekly update again.
Planking the decks will take much more time as I thought in the first place. Though the strips are from Caldercraft, the sizes are all different . They go from 3.2mm up to 4.8mm as you can see on the picture.
I used a dart and hammer to make little holes in the strips. After using Artesania-oil, it gives a nice (nail)effect.
I also made some doors, we all want our privacy, do we.....
Looking at my ship now, I am quit satisfied how it goes so far. Had to do several modifications to get it all fit and as I see it, many mods will follow. But its part of this hobby...

edmay reacted to smatsik in Steel's Naval Architecture
Just a head's up for people like me that have been looking for it for some time. Google Books now has a copy of Steel's Elements and Practice of Naval Architecture available. I don't have a link as I stumbled on it during lunch at work the other day. However, I found it easily with an advanced search. It does not have the plates of ship plans but seems to be otherwise complete. In particular it has the tables of scantlings and body data for all the various sizes of ships.

edmay reacted to schiffebastler in Amerigo Vespucci 1931 by schiffebastler - Mantua - scale 1:84 - Italian sail training ship build
Bevor I will start with the gangways, I had again a look to the doors of the bulwark. On the picture you can see, the existing one based on the kit. But I don't like them and they are absolutely not corresponding with the original ones.
So, I teared them off. Then I build new ones with a ledge arround, added some hinges and metal composite, and of course the exterior side was painted.
The Amerigo has three doors, one at the starboard side and two at the other side. Although I intend to show the model with fully sails, I like to show at least one of the gangways in extended version, another partly extended and the other in 'closed' version. Becourse of this, the back door at the larboard side will be closed.
And now I continue, analysing the pictures of the Amerigo, in order to understand the operation of the gangways, which will follow after being ready.
Regards, Joachim

Ditto what Mark said. Just think of "likes" as people who are enjoying your work but don't feel like they have anything significant to add to the discussion at that point. If you have a general question about some aspect of the hobby (planking techniques, for example), you can try asking your question in the relevant area of the ship modeling techniques forum.

Hello Hennie ,the walnut stain makes the deck really stand out ,very nice ,the main thing to me is your smile of enjoyment ,just like your profile , research ,scratch additions ,using stains and different paints to improve the look will in my opinion produce a masterpiece, following with much interest, in 1959 I did the Nimagan march 100 km sorry for spelling , had the best time in your country, the most generous and happy people, was in brit mil then ,Edwin

Very nice work Jesse. I enjoy seeing the detail you are putting into your Syren. Where did you find the information on tying down the binnacle?

When fitting the stern davits they didn't fit as good as they should. found that I needed to add a strip under them made them sit at the right height much better. I didn't feel the pegs beneath the kit supplied cleats were deep enough to hold well when rigging is pulling on them so I snipped them off, drilled them out and glued wire pins in that will sit deeper and grab the wood better. Stern davits and cleats on and painted.

Added the ships wheel that I built last year and rigged it up. Again I have borrowed from others research and made some adjustments to how the instructions showed it.

In a little conflict about the belaying pins. Would prefer to have wood ones but It would take so long to try to turn all of them. The brass ones are all uniform and the same so I'm trying painting them with one thin coat of Testors Wood color then 1 thin coat of flat tan over that. I will see if this works ok seeing how most of them will be covered up with the rigging tie-offs and coils. If it does not work I will try to turn them from toothpicks or something. The brass ones will have the most strength.
I'm making sure the anything secured to the deck (especially where there will be additional pull or pressure from rigging being tied off has metal pins underneath for additional security.
Overhead look at the progress so far...

I don't like building small ships, my eyes are too bad.
Best of luck on your build. May the seas be fare and the rum be flowing.
