ScottRC reacted to DORIS in ROYAL CAROLINE 1749 by Doris - 1:40 - CARD
Thank you a lot for your comments, dear friends, I am pleased you like my work. There is still a lot of things I should improve in my work so I have motivation to learn and try new ways....

Numerals are printed on matt photo paper (using ink printer), then oversprayed by acrylic clear varnish and after drying the numerals are cut out and placed on the model. It is necessary to achieve as thin layer of paper as possible so I separate bottom layers of paper using knife and tweezers.

How did you know? You are absolutely right, I really work as a teacher at high school and I like my work a lot. Here is a pics -  me (in the middle) among some of our students:

    Kind regards,

ScottRC reacted to J11 in CSS Alabama by J11 - Revell - 1/96 scale - PLASTIC - kit bash 90% historical accuracy
Here's the update images on the dead-eye's. These are very fragile and time consuming to install and build from scratch. Even break when installing them and have to bond then tightly to the plastic and wood before final drilling can commence. The detailing along with angle placement is exact per three sets of historical prints, rigging will be multiple colors along with historical accuracy. But will be awhile as the hammocks and davits are next along with the extension spars. All will be scratch built for proper sizes and accuracy. These are work in progress.

Since she is at the half way point for the build I'll keep this brief for a start. Research in depth along with custom and scratch built parts is in progress. Rigging and masts per BlueJackets model plans. I am changing some colors for a show model style IE mast colors and other smaller boats along with deck detailing enhancements.

    Cannon's:

    Ship deck detail (In progress):

    My humble dry-dock (Mobile):

I'll post updates periodically, any questions please ask. The kit was found in shelf perfect condition and is a joy to build. The best CSS Alabama kit out there I feel is the Bluejackets model of her but was to expensive for me to purchase. But I do have the plans from the kit which are historically excellent. Time to complete is another 4 months.

    Hi Rob,
Your documentation of your rigging process is going to be invaluable for me since I am interested in working in the smaller scale.  Everything is looking very refined.

After the sail was dry, I shackled up the sheets and reefed in the clews.

Still have to add the reef points,  the leach lines, clew lines and the downhauls.

But I'm getting there...and then the mast will get stepped into the hull.

The masts are ready with all their equipment. I want to emphasize that the foremast incorporates a wind vane in its crowning. Another aspect on which I draw your attention is the network which appears in one of the two coves situated for this purpose behind the mainmast. In this case, I took the license to dye the net greenish, to accentuate the contrast. Although the model goes up the masts upright, on one of the photos that I present, the mainmast is shot, to see how the boat would be able to fish.

The hull of the ship is already painted. I decided not to paint any element of the deck and leave them all in wood.

You are right Marc. There is an another point  ... considering my son (Hothead) is last four years in Novi sad ( 80km from Belgrade) on his study od architecture, and he is at home 7-10 days in winter and 1-1,5 months at summer, he is factually almost gone from home. So, it seems that my single life, as my final life story, just begins, and I have to adjust and adopt myself to this semi-new situation. This is, let`s say, multilayered situation, in all fields of living and working. Home organization is quite different now, my day time also, by all means. Of coursse, I do not intend to spend the rest of my days alone, and I continualy do some steps in this direction  , but life is life, adn we will see what will be on this field. So, on some way, there is a bit of time required to put myself in shape, and to make adequate, so needed in 60th year of life, regular day routine
Life is nice, and let us enjoy in it !!!!

Sad times but good times to see the children set out on a life of their own.  I'm relearning to enjoy the life after the last year and although there's stumbling blocks, my goal is clear.  You seem to have that point also, my friend.

So after several coats of primer/putty/sanding, the hull is smoothing up nicely.

    Jim,

When I read you first post, it sounded like you just took up painting as a hobby for retirement, then I saw your work and thought man, you didn't retire, your on a career.  You have all the chemistry for good nautical illustration than so many professional illustrators seem to struggle with.  Most important, you have mastered perspective, depth of field, and scale.  That is very hard for a lot of illustrators to do, for out of scale features stick out and throw the scene off balance.

    I really like your work.

Maybe only cover a small section of each wing, fuse, and tail?  It would be a challenge, especially masking and painting the markings and adding the pinking so everything lines up and then the transition from the covered section to the exposed section looks balanced.

Good to hear that the ailerons actuate for its really looks great.  Balsa USA will probably the kit I go with, they have a great reputation and support.  In building for RC, I cheat go go with servos for I do not trust my rigging skills. At present I am building a 1/32 scale plastic SE5, my first one, and find that rigging a bipe is much more complicated than I thought as compared to a square rigged ship.

    Hi John,

Sorry about your father, I lost mine a few years back and he was like yours in that he support me both through my hobby and my career.
I have been following your detailed build log  because I have love of bi planes and am planning on building possibly a 1/4 or 1/6 scale Sopwith in a few years.  I see you share your workshop with a set of Ludwigs. I also share mine with a Ludwig Standard and just purchased a complete set of Pearl Sessions.
To your build, I am amazed how strait everything came out without the use of jigs.  Since all the rigging is so detailed, maybe I missed it, but do the ailerons operate?

About to start my first wooden ship- the Rattlesnake. Over the last 50 years I've built 3 sailing ships that I can remember. My first was the Golden Hind(no rigging and given to my grandmother). The next two were plastic 1:96 scale. Not sure what happened to the first and can't really remember how far along I got. I was a teenager with lots going on. The second was a few years after I got married to a woman with cats. One of them loved to play in the rigging.
Now I plan on learning with the Rattlesnake and then I'll do one more Constitution. One thing I'm thinking about for the Rattlesnake is a diorama. I see few models of sailing vessels displayed this way. It's something to consider.
One thing I do plan on doing before I start the Constitution is to go up and actually see it in MA. Not sure if my wife and daughter-in-law will go but my son said we could go for a couple of days.
I don't plan on putting a build log on here, mainly I doubt if there's anything I could show you guys besides my mistakes, but who knows down the road.
When I ordered my the kit from Model Expo, I had a chance to talk the the guy there and he directed my to this site. Seemed like a real nice guy and I'm glad he sent me here.
    Looking forward to the experience.

Michael...I would think that a natural sail is not set tight like a drum head..but is rather over sized...and as you suggested...they slightly stretch.

My experience with paper is that if you only cut the sail exactly the right size...the surface used to create the billow will indeed rob from the length....making the sail short.  So experimentation has proven this to be true.
