I am building mine inline with Van de velde's work and the builders model. The gunport quantity position was already been addressed when I cut them. The stern balcony arrangement will be added when I add the stern framing.I never intended to build as Euromodel intended from the start. The actual hull shape is correct OOTB,the stern involves lengthening the hull sides by around 15mm above the counter.Tweaks have also been made to the sheer of the top edge of the hull. The hull around the beakhead is also correct,it is how this area is enclosed by the 'three step' arrangement each side that changes things. If your search 'Mordaunt 1681' on the NMM website, you will see all the pics which explain things clearer. The area under the foredeck is also enclosed,a curved bulkhead featuring belfry is missing from the Euromodel kit.
The bigger question is,which way are you going to build yours Crackers?

    Kind Regards

P.S. I hope you start a log, kinda lonely being the Mordaunt builder on here

LOL sorry to dissapoint but I just love the halfbuilt look. It triggers my imagination and I also like the look and proportions it gives her. A fully rigged model would fit the case, but probably look a bit cramped.

Hey all! Last days I've managed to do some more details. The railing was less problems to get in place than I imagined. It fitted very well to the shape of the ship. It was a good advice to do it last Nigel as its fragile by it's nature. The ropes holding the anchor and the others hanging will be corrected when the model is positioned on the stand and I can tell how it should hang.

And with this it turns out I'm done with the model. It's a mixed feeling as I'm happy to have reached my goal but also feel a little sad as I'll miss working on it and talking to you all about it. It has been a great inspiration and source of knowledge, so thanks eveyone for the help and support!

These will likely be the last outdoor pctures of her and I will now start on the case so more to come.

Matti.....you built the perfect cliff hanger!   I was expecting to see the start of the second stepping of the masts.  I go back to work,  from my holiday vacation.........and return to hear you are finished!   AWWWWWWWW!

I'm not sad though.......I got to see the most detailed build of this vessel....than I perhaps have ever seen!  you have created such a masterful piece of art.   I have the Billing instructions for her  {someone else was building her at the time}.  to go full mast,  she would be over 31 inches tall.........think of the case you'd need to build!  she's a mammoth 38 1/2 inches long, as it is..........just with what you've done....that equates to a very large case!!!  she's a beautiful build,  my friend..........can't wait to see what your next subject will be!

congrats in building a very interesting ship.......it's much more than  "just a model"!

Hey all, here is an update finally. I've done the other side of the mainmast and made the portside of the mizzen mast. I found it difficult to imitate the sagging curves of the original, but it was easier on the mizzen as the shrouds are angled straight up. First a reference pic I took at the museum:

Thanks Buck! I used straws from an old brush to get it in scale. CA glue it to the stick and then trim and it to shape. I did two tests before I managed to get it right.

And yes, my fingers where hairy afterward.

Here is a part of Eendracht by Willem Van de Velde showing two svablar and the look I tried to make:

For me brush works better on a wooden shipmodel. I work with washes and drybrushing alot and also pastel powder. I use the airbrush once in a while when I need to add a thin coat of varnish to make the pastels stick.

I paint everything before assembling them. You need to be sure of the look you want early though.

But this is preference and imo there are few wrong or rights in modelbuilding.

Hey all! Here are some progress pics:

I've put the ropes on the anchors. I based them on the description in Landströms book.

I want to have a svabel so I scratched one.

And here I have rigged one of the anchors, the svabel. I also made and positioned the penterbalk but it's not showing on the pics.

Thanks Mike and Law! Earlier in the build before I decided to make her in this halfrigged stage, I planned to use the display case to keep her in during the later stages. Therefore I allready bought one and thought through how I wanted it. Now hopefully I just have to put it together, if I pull it off.

i`d have to go with the others on this one. Using a brush is alot better for fiddly tasks. For painting the hull under the waterline i would maby use an airbrush.  I take a look at the stages of construction in order to see what needs to be painted before assembling parts. ie, hard to reach places etc. hope this helps you out.

I agree with Matti. It's a brush & water based acrylics for me every time. I found airbrushing too fiddly & time consuming, at least with acrylics you can clean your brushes quickly in water!

I,like Matti prefer a brush. The biggest issue with wood, especially basswood,is that the first coat lifts the grain.I tend to apply lots of thin coats by brush with plenty of flatting back every couple of coats. You are gaining very little tooling up with an airbrush as any imperfections are sanded away anyway. However I do spray everything with clear polyurethane afterwards.
Painting areas that will be hard to reach as you go is highly recommended.
As Matti says though, there is no right and wrong,we just find a method that works best for us.

Hey all! I did the anchors yesterday. I planned to scratch them as the kit version was to round in shape and they where the same size. When looking closer I realized they could be reshaped to a better shape and that one could be resized quite easily so that's what I ended up doing. The plastic was easy to work with.

I made the wooden parts out of wood instead of the plastic ones that came with the kit.

The rings are rope with CA to make it hard, with smaller thread looped around it.

When I was working o the rigging the other evening I used a lamp to see the details. When we looked up on the ceiling it gave a pretty cool shadow effect.
