The second year of my build is almost over. Not much progress this year, but I hope that I can post a last update at New Year's Eve.

It's time to say Thank You to all who followed my log, to all who wrote their own log I where I found so much hints and inspiration and to the crew of this wonderful forum for their great job..

    Thanks Ed and druxey.
I have to look, how to do this part. The deadwood and transoms will be much more complicated at my sloop than expected.

During the work on the Deadwood, I found an interesting detail on the original drawing.

David wrote in his book, that the knee will end under the lower filling transom. If I interpret the line right, it looks that the knee also sits in front of and under the other transoms. Is it possible, that this part looks similiar to the keelson or the stemson? Or show the drawing smaller parts of timber which are sitting only under the transoms?
Perhaps someone can help me how to interpret the line correct.

Yes, Christian. On this draught the sternson knee (extension of the keelson), extends up to the underside of the wing transom.

A follow up:  I did a quick check some other few drawings - among them Plate X in Steel, and (as a refresher) the Naiad drawings.  This dashed extension on other drawings is the underside of the keelson (actually the keelson knee) that continues up to the top of the false post. It caps over the forward ends of the filling transoms.  Is there not a drawing that shows the keelson?  This should answer the question.

A good question, Christian.  The line appears to be dashed, suggesting a reference line rather than a continuation of the knee, but I can add nothing more.

Thanks for the reply, Christian, and everyone for the likes. Good to be back at the dry dock!

I found a small error in my layout of the deck clamps. While I was carefully reproducing what was in my main reference, AOTS: HMS Diana, I forgot that I was building the HMS Triton! When I was dry-fitting the planks it soon became obvious that there was a problem: the butt ends were hanging between frames! So, I had to rework the measurements and cut several new planks that now go from centre-to-centre on the frames. Good news was that I could still use parts of the first planks.

Cutting the planks accurately was 'interesting'. After carefully marking out the shape I used a CMK resin blade.

I glued up the pieces and clamped them into place. After a few hours I checked them out. I had to fix up a small mistake on one end...a small gap that still doesn't look perfect but I will try to fill it once the glue dries thoroughly. I don't normally say this, but it is something that will not likely be seen by anyone! (Shhhh...it will be our secret!

    Hi,

Another day of ups and downs. I cut the flat futtocks and used the scroll saw to cut the guides for the keel and keelson slots

Then used a flat carving knife to cut the excess and prepare the pieces for the mill so I have nice squared, flat surfaces

    And after the mill

Next phase was the chocks, I cut the edges for the first two of the "C" frame

But was can be seen the one on the left suffered a fatal accident. I was cutting the angled face with a x-acto blade and because I was cutting parallel to the wood grain it just cut the egde off. Basic mistake...

I still used the other edge to make the other chock

It came out better then I was expecting for the first one

Now to redo the flat futtock...

An interesting strategy: I hope this works out well for you. I suppose another possibility is to not glue one side of the spacers so that the frames 'float' with any dimensional change.

So a small piece of rising wood has been added before the aft section for frame 10 fore to be mounted to, then the next surviving section of 8 frames will be installed.

Now I'm thinking of leaving the floor fillers around 10 fore out, this will give room for the wood to move and hopefully help avoid the issues I had on the original build. I shall repeat this every 8 frames so it will look consistent and it works out to be the correct amount for the amount frames left to complete the framing.

Today I finished the standing rigging.

Once the ratlines were done I only had to rig the topmast shrouds and the topmast stay.

Even though I have shown the topmast backstay on the plans,  I did not rig them.  I just wanted to show what they would look like.  Only under rare conditions were they used.  I have never seen a contemporary model with them rigged and the straps on the side of the hull are always left empty.  So I decided to follow suit.  I think it ruins the look of the model a bit as well and this is more in keeping with what everyone is used to seeing.

Next up I will start the running rigging.   Its getting close!!!!

Some additional lifesaver rings are assembled

    Simon,

    very nice build.

If you cut the parts of the components for the stem, you have to look to the grain of the wood. It should be always in the longitudinal direction of the part and not perpendicular as seen on your stem. Take this for the future and don't changeit on your model, after coppering not much will be seen from this.

Then I redrew all the lines. So aside from some minor shaping I plan on doing by the transom, the hull shaping is essentially done for the 31 pounder anyways.  Note the lovely curve at the edge of the hull which curves slightly upwards at the bow and stern and note the pencil line on the bowsprit where the deck is supposed to line up. Next up is going to be the beginnings of adding planking lines in preparation for the planking. Crew added for dramatic effect, that guy in the front though... "metaaaaahhllll!!"
