BANYAN reacted to Chuck in HM Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Chuck - FINISHED - 1:48 scale - kit prototype
Yes I did....right out of the package. These Albion tubes are so thin-walled there is no need to anneal them. They are very soft and pliable. Just a few light taps on each side is all you need. As you can see in the photo they start out much longer and after you tap them they get thinner because they stretch so easily.
Yet when completed they are still stiff enough that they hold their shape real nice. I dont worry about making them perfectly the same width or length. It goes so quickly that it takes about a 1/2 hour to make several dozen. Then as I need them its easy to find a bunch that came out the same if that is what is needed.
I used 1.5 mm tubes for these.

BANYAN reacted to Mike40 in Shop Made Dremel Drill Press- Not my idea
John: It won't have to be rechecked for square so long as the mounting bracket stays attached after removal of the Dremel. I just need to eye the end of the bracket mounted to the DP to make sure it hasn't change position on the DP quill. The bracket doesn't interfere in any way with regular drilling operations. The only problem I've had so far is that I sometimes turn the DP on or off while stupidly expecting the Dremel to go on or off !

BANYAN got a reaction from mtaylor in Pennants Flown from Mastheads c1770
Thanks B.E. Yep agree and have established she had the Red Ensign and Jack forward - but it is the other pennants I am trying to determine. Do you think she may have also flown the common pennant (tricolour) if assigned to other duties (scientific exploration)? Interesting that the Commissioning pennant was at main mast - if nothing else i will consider fitting this one. The period is too late for Streamers, so it is possibly 1 to 3 pennants.
cheers

BANYAN got a reaction from mtaylor in Pennants Flown from Mastheads c1770
Hi folks, in trying to finish my HM Bark Endeavour c1770 (all the small things ) I am trying to determine what pennants would have typically been flown from the mastheads (in addition to the Jack forward and Ensign aft).
I am assuming one would have been the commissioning pennant but I am unsure of its size and colours; this would probably have been flown from the mizzen?
In a recent painting of Endeavour she is depicted with a pennant flying from each of the mastheads, with the mainmast pennant being fairly large (long).
Any information re positioning, size, structure, colour etc would be most appreciated.
cheers

You have a real talent for micro blacksmithing Glenn; the stoves looks superb!
Nice to see an update but we can understand that you have been a little distracted with the shadow-build.

Nice work on the rigging, especially the crows feet mate; it's a wonder you didn't turn to something a little stronger to drink

BANYAN reacted to ggrieco in Brig Mercury rigging by Igor Capinos
Igor, I have been admiring your 3D models for awhile now. I just wish I had your ability. As an engineer, I have no problem modeling mechanical parts but I'm amazed at your combination of engineering and truly artistic skills. I would love to be able to model a figurehead to mill but, I just have trouble with organic shapes. Your 3D models are incredible.

Thanks to everyone for stopping by and all the likes.
Chris, It's nice to hear that you'll be getting a work space. Look forward to more updates.
Michael, Thanks so much.
Druxey, Much appreciated and I can't wait to start back up.
Bob, Thanks and checking on you from time to time helped with the withdrawal.
Ben, I'm glad to hear you're close to sarting to build again.
Pat, When I started stripping it I was pleasently surprised at the quality of the wood.
Grant, "Play" is what the Admiral calls it everytime I say I'm going to the shop to "work".

Have you ever noticed that it's often put: "You're going to go play with your boats again?".

So, now we have a name for the hair-pulling rigging.... "Crows foot"
Then, I assume what I've been wrestling with would be called "Double Crow's Foot".
Whatever we call it, I came to the shop this morning and, after careful study, concluded the entire bowsprit rigging had too much slack and had to be re-tensioned.
This took four cups of coffee and almost as many hours.
Still not perfect, but as good as it's going to get.

BANYAN reacted to popeye the sailor in Syborn by popeye the sailor - FINISHED - 1:33 - trawler
I wasn't to photogenic with the block pulleys........I glued the other side to them.....let it dry, and cut them up. I still need to sand them and finish shaping them.
almost ready for paint........the holes are drilled for the pulley pins
I took a larger dowel stub, and cut it into slices. these were glued to each end of the short dowels. the dowel is a hard wood........there may be a threat of splitting. it didn't happen .......I used one of the small gears to center the holes. I wasn't going to drill all the way through.........but I did.
I made some hooks as well.......fashioned from larger eye bolts.......I decided to make two more block pulleys. I'm not sure if I'll set them up on the bulwarks or the deck.......I still have time to make up my mind.
I'm going to use the metal frames after all.........I filed the edges to smooth them out. I hope to have assembled soon, without so much disassembly this time

I'm back at work today.........it was inevitable. all good things gotta come to an end........I'll plan another one real soon
I started to make some of the parts for the gallows winch.......like the beginnings of these block pulleys.
I wanted some larger dowel for the reels.......I hated to use this one.....I have a set of three, which would have made great masting, the grain is awesome. it will be cut up into short lengths.
it was also time to get that other ramp on the fish box.
I was so miffed........this one went on perfectly !
.........and they both work quite well
I took a couple more shots on the deck
all that's left are some small additions I think would add to the look
