Keith, Totally agree with what you’ve voiced. I was very impressed with his framing and how precise it looked. I was very disappointed last night when I read his unfinished log. Rick

Keith, Thank you! I’ve been looking at Niagara logs, but haven’t gotten to this one yet. Thanks again! Rick

That’s a good one, Roger! Rick

It was a build log that I found last year here on MSW. I saved a few pictures but not the log. Stupid me. Rick

All, Thank you for the warm welcomes and the advice. I’m planning on a build log and hopefully I won’t hit too many snags. One of the reasons I got the Medway Longboat is the subject, but mostly because of the outstanding instructions that Chuck provides and the many informative build logs. To that end, I’ve got the Cheerful waiting in the wings. I’m very excited to get going and have been messing around with some “stuff” to scratch that itch for the moment. Yesterday I bought some paint and I’m going to try Chuck’s method of many watered down coats on some scrap. Is there a thread on how to post pictures? Thanks! Rick

Hi all! Been lurking on this site since I retired a year ago and have seen many awesome builds that are very inspiring. But first a little about me. I’ve been modeling ever since I can remember and started with plastic. Being my father was an avid R/C modeler, I quickly followed in his footsteps, so building is in my blood. I’ve won several modeling contest in plastic and a few at National R/C trade shows, mostly in scale helicopters. Back in my early 20s, I tried to build a I believe a Billings Cutty Sark, of course with no ship modeling skills, I failed miserably. I never lost the burning desire to build ship models and built several R/C boats, including submarines. Now that I’m retired and more patient, the time has come to dive into this world. For my entire working life, I worked in the jet engine field as a supervisor/manager mostly in overhaul and repair for commercial and military engines. It was a fantastic career for over 40 years. With this being said, I’ve decided to start with Chuck’s Medway Longboat as it ticks off a lot of boxes for me. I think there’s enough complexity without being overwhelming, new wood working skills and mostly some simple rigging will be a great starting point. Plus I just love the subject! I already have the kit and have read all of the logs, and will be adding mine. I’ll probably start after the holidays when things settle down and I look forward to making new friends here! Best Regards …. Freebird, aka also known as Rick

Rusty, Thank you for the reply - much appreciated! Now the question is, where can you find holly? It seems to have all but vanished. Thoughts? Before starting on Cheerful, I need to get at least 1 build under my belt, and that’s where Chuck’s Medway Longboat comes into play. More to come later. Rick

Hello Rusty! Beautiful Cheerful build! I’ll be using your build log when I get to mine which is waiting on the shelf for me to gain more experience. I do have a question, what wood did you use for the deck and is there a finish on it? I just love the bleached look and I’d like to go that route on my build. Thank you for the info! Rick

Wipe On Poly Techniques
Freebird replied to Freebird's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Glenn, Thanks for the input! On Syren’s serv-o-magic, which is cherry, I’ve applied 3 coats of satin WOP with 24 hours between coats, no sanding. The finish is baby bottom smooth (no doubt cause it’s a pretty hard wood). I’m impressed with the ease of using and the results of WOP. Rick -
Wipe On Poly Techniques
Freebird replied to Freebird's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Bob, Thank you for the info, much appreciated! I'm currently building Chuck’s serving machine and using that as a test bed for using WOP. I’ve got 2 coats applied without sanding between coats and the finish is pretty nice. Rick -
Hey Guys! New member onboard here! I’ve been reading (more like studying), some of the incredible build logs and I’m just so taken by the awesome models and techniques. My first build will be Chuck’s Medway Longboat and I have some questions on using WOP. First, I’ve never used WOP before, and I’ll be using MinWax Satin WOP. I see that you can use a cloth or a brush to get into nooks and crannies. Does WOP need to be sanded between coats or just add the next coat after a couple of hours? Is there a preferred technique to using WOP for best results? Really looking forward to starting my project on 1/1/21 but need some guidance using WOP. Thanks guys! Rick

Glenn, Awesome job you’re doing on your Cheerful! Congrats! I’m new to this forum and have been reading and absorbing knowledge like a dry sponge and looking for more. Earlier in your log, you mentioned that you have a method for ripping/milling planks. Could you explain and post some pictures as this is an area I need to learn. Many thanks! R
