New development!  The Lauck Street Ship Yard has announced that they are going to begin to produce the POF Armed Virginia Sloop kit in 1/32 scale once again.  The kit will be exactly the same as the kit in this build log, except the parts are laser cut rather than CNC cut.  If anyone is interested in a fun but very challenging kit, this is it!

I started framing the main deck forward.  I also built some wooden crates for the hold as cargo.  I'm painting the metal bands on the powder kegs copper colored right now.  They will go in the magazine.  These little details won't be easily seen once the deck s framed in and partially planked, but they are fun to build, and I know they are there!

Hi Grant!  I'm building a 1/24 scale battle station and used model railroad track spikes for the bolts on my cannon carriage.  The size# 220 has a "head" of 1/16"  and a bolt shaft diameter of 1/32".  This is perfect for 1/24, but too large for 1/48.  They come in a variety of sizes, so it might be worth checking out your local railroading hobby shop

Been awhile since my last Speedwell update. Work on the forecastle has finished, for the most part. Caulking is black paper. It's a bit more work but a little cleaner than when I use a pencil. The wrought iron belfry is unusual but present on the contemporary model. I twisted 1/32" square brass bar stock with one end in a stationary vice and the other end in a pin vice. Consistent upward pressure while twisting insures an even result.

I redid much of the bow portion of the kit.  I eliminated the bit, whose only function was to support (inaccurately) the bowsprit.  I fastened the sprit to the deck and held it with an iron fitting...much more accurate.  I also scratch-built a windlass to weigh the anchors, and a hatch to lead the anchor line below decks. Notice the boxwood timber supporting the pawl that engages the center gear on the windlass cylinder.   Almost ready to rig.

BTW, the hawse pipes are actually fairly symmetrical.  The photo introduces an optical illusion!

Still working my way back toward the stern; I made the bulkhead partition leading to the officer’s quarters.  I decided that the actual doorways should be a different color.  In actuality, the entire partition would probably have been painted red.  But I like the way it looks – except for that little nick on the left door.  I’m going to have to do something with that.

Here's the finished stove.  I still have to finish the grease tray.  The stove was to have a guard rail surrounding the top cooking surface, but I felt I had to draw the line somewhere.  The hinges and firebox door/oven doors are far from perfect...even in this scale every little error shows.  Still, I do like working in the larger scales in general because of the detail it allows one to add.
