Dan Vadas got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Bismarck by Dan Vadas - FINISHED - GPM - 1:200 - CARD and PE
    Thank you John and Carl.

All the portholes and steps are fitted. The closest set of steps are about to be painted :

There's another Boom near the bow :

The main entry ladders are made from PE. I scratchbuilt the platforms :

It's now time to fit the screws and rudders which I made 5 months ago :

The final things to fit are the two flags, as I usually do. It signals the end of the build . I de-laminated the paper to make it look a bit more realistic, and glued the pieces back-to-back :

I only need to glue the model to the base, which I made a while ago. It's just been given it's final coat of lacquer (I'd forgotten to do that earlier ). The final pictures will be posted a bit later today.

I've fitted the one boat that sits on the davits. I used 0.2mm wire to simulate the lowering cable, and some 0.4mm wire for the support bracket that holds it to the middle of the davit :

All the railings are finally completed, apart from a bit of touch-up paint for the port side ones :

Because I was two lengths of railing short I've had to use a some that was left over from Amatsukaze. Unfortunately it's only a 2-bar rail, but I managed to have enough 3-bar to get to the aft cleats so I did a bit of a "fudge". Unless you look carefully it's not really noticeable, and it'll do me :

There's actually still quite a bit to do to finish this model, things I'd forgotten about. I'd left off fitting the portholes and steps to the hull in case they were damaged any time I had to move the model (which was a lot ). I've made a start to the steps - there are about 70 of them to fit. I'm using 0.2mm nickel-silver wire for them :

Yes, I've noticed the bit of grey touch-up paint needed near the bottom . It's not the only bit either.

Thanks for the replies guys .

The four anchors are fitted. I used 15 link-per-inch chain for the main ones, and 40 lpi for the auxilliary chain on the foremost one. The rather poor quality printing really stands out in the different red colours, and that panel didn't line up properly either . More touch-up will be needed :

I've also made the fore and aft flagpoles from 1.0mm and 0.6mm brass wire :

Now i'm onto the railing for the main deck. This should take me a couple of days - there's over 2.5 metres of it .

It's been a while since I last posted to this log. Life got in the way a bit, but I've still managed to do some more work on the "House". These pics are of the staircases and windows on the seaboard side :

Next step was to make the smallest of the three buildings. Here are some of the parts needed :

Some assembly pics. The instructions are a bit sparse in some areas, a fair bit of guesswork was involved but it all came together in the end :

The building fitted to the base. I'll straighten out the wrinkles at a later stage :

This model is of the iconic Sydney Opera House. The kit is from Schreiber-Bogen, a German kit publisher. When finished it will measure 730mm x 470mm x 230mm :

My thoughts on the kit are that it is not printed as well as I'd hoped, with no "weathering" at all and fairly simplistic colouring. The card is of reasonable quality without being exceptional, and the instructions are fairly basic line drawings which are easy enough to follow. The design of construction could have been better, but it's workable.

On with it. I started the model 3 days ago, and have completed the base to the stage of adding the vertical sections. For bracing beneath the base a number of square sections are used, some of which are integral with the upper surface and others are free sections :

These pieces are ready for fitting to the main section :

First thing I can tell you is that the lines DON'T cross over at the fore end of the bowsprit. You must have the flying jib line way too high.

Check out this pic of an overall side view - different ship, but the rigging is pretty well the same for any brig :

    .... continued.

I repainted the deck, fittings and cabin and painted a red stripe down the side to cover my repairs to the bulwarks and also to make it "sing" a bit more :

And five minutes ( ) later I had it all re-rigged. It actually took me about a week, as I've had a bad back and couldn't spend more than a couple of hours a day on it :

For my efforts I'm going to charge a bottle of a nice Single Malt Scotch - it sounds better than asking $80 for the work on a decorative model they bought in a garage sale for $5.00 .

Note ; please don't follow any of the rigging I've done on this on your own model - nothing is "authentic", but it looks OK for what it is.

Well, here are the final pics - she's all complete. Apart from the accident with the mast the whole build went according to plan, and I am very happy with the result. So is my partner - after all, I built it as a present for her :

Meanwhile, back at the model ……….

The stern after the aftermost frame was ripped out, leaving a mess on the sternpost and glue matted shallow frame rebates.

The sternpost was cleaned up and fillers fitted into the rebates.

The wing transom has been fitted. This transom is a straight line from sternpost to frame, but the transoms below it will be curved.

Meanwhile the hawse pieces have been fitted and the bow roughly sanded.
