  1. The Swift was my first build and I didn't pay enough attention to he bulkheads. The result is....my model has a slight curve to it.
  2. It looks like a pretty credible planking job for a first timer. Planking is one of the hardest things to do on a model. The best advise I got was from an old hand who said "....treat each plank as if it's its own model." With a little filler yours will look just fine. You could also cover the first layer with a veneer. Don't forget...when your ship is finished only you will be looking at the bottom. All eyes will go to the deck and rigging.
  3. While I'm making deadeyes, chain plates and siezings....I installed the ship's bell. It's eight bells now, so I have to run.
  4. Believe it or not....I think I have a few tricks up my sleeve...experimental of course....if they work, I shall reveal them. If not I will confess and start over doing it another way. The standing rigging will be installed on the ship. I would make a catastrophic mistake doing it off. I experimented with the deck cannons and that trick worked.
  5. I want to thank all of you for your concern. I shall take it all in and proceed down the path of least trouble for my thick thumbs and shaky fingers. I picked up a few tips at our new club, "The Arizona Shipwrights" that will ease the way for an amateur like me.
  6. Brian, Thanks for the pic. They will be siezed. The lines between the deadeyes have been painted with 50/50 PVA to make them keep shape.
  7. Nice work on those chain plates! I'm jealous since I haven't figured exactly how to attack my chain plates. History shows that chain plates evolved very fast in 50 years.
  8. I'm attempting to mount the main mast permanently. I've been playing with not mounting the masts and keeping them straight with the rigging and I'm not happy with that approach using my limited talents. I'm using two levels and a jig to get it straight and with a 3 degree rake.
  9. Bob & Brian, Your suggestions are very valid, but I think I figured a different way of skinning this cat. I had a heck of a time doing it the traditional way on my first model. Time will tell. Thanks,
  10. I'm starting a deadeye factory since I give up trying to weave them on the rigging and still getting them even.
  11. My shipyard is open, but the workers are fat and lazy after 11 days cruising the Sea of Cortez.
  12. My Admiral is making me close my shipyard for twelve days so we can cruise to the Sea of Cortez and do some snorkeling.
  13. By the way...we just had the second meeting of The Arizona Shipwrights and I always learn something there since most are master builders. Today's tip was....use a straight nail clipper for small clipping jobs.
  14. I never did either, but when I went to the sewing shop....they had them. You can go on E-Bay and see them also.
  15. Well, I bought two types of beading needles. Flexible with a big collapsable loop, and open eye which is two needles welded at each tip with a big center opening. They both worked very well along with the CA tipped line. Thanks to all I now have three ways to thread the blocks.
