  1. Yes...I broke up the original beeswax...it's starting to turn to pudding.
  2. I've brewed some concoctions to stain the hammocks. Black tea (2 kinds) and coffee. I tested it on similar fabric.....we'll see?
  3. I put small chunks of beeswax into some turpentine....the wax does not dissolve easily. I guess I'll shave thin wafers in next time.
  4. I started a gun rope coil factory. I gave up on the plastic rolling device since it got very gummy fast. I used 50% PVA and 50% water to soak the rope. Then I just carefully rolled the ropes in my fingers to make the coils. I check several models and very strict Flemish coils looked a bit parade like and not the way guns would be ready for battle. So I made them less formal looking. I still have about a dozen to go.
  5. Bill, I guess I'll paint the stuff on. Friction is holding them very well, though.
  6. Also, I think the hammocks are too white...I'll have to tone them down.
  7. Finally the hammocks are complete...all 180 of them. Now I have to figure out the best way to secure them. One method would be bees wax and turprntine...I'll have to find out exactly how to make such a brew. Any other ideas?....only friction holds them now.
  8. Blocks squaring your bulkheads will keep her straight for the whole build. Nice job so far.
  9. I just found out from my newly found friends at Arizona Shipwrights that the grates on a sailing ship should be no bigger than a man's heel. The grates that I struggled so hard to fabricate that were provided by Constructo are big enough to swallow a man's leg! It's too late for me to rectify this major mistake in scale but at least all of you can now check the scale of future grates.
  10. Got this great tip from Frank from our newly established Arizona Shipwrights. Frank said to use plastic lids to hold small parts and bottle caps to hold small amounts of glue for small projects. Good tips!
  11. Finished another bank of hammocks. Only about fifty to go.
  12. By the way...I still have to coil about 36 more rope coils for the deck cannons. I guess I'll do anything to put off the serious rigging of the ship.
  13. In case you're wondering how many hammocks I have to make.....155 not counting the 20 or so rejects. That's a lot of rolling, tying and cutting on a miniature level which is very difficult for a fat fingered, shaky old man.
  14. Nice work. It looks very familiar to me since it was my forst build. Keep up the good work
  15. Bill, Just friction for now in case I don't like the results. When I give my final approval, which means I give up since that's as good as it gets, I'll probably do what you did.
  16. Finished another bank of hammocks. Now I have a regular hammock folding factory. Now I'm about 40% done.

  18. Tim, Here's a picture of the netting Constructo provided in the kit. It was very hard to work with. It came in the box folded in a square. The creases did not want to come out, so I had to work hard to get clean runs for the stanchions. It's made out of plastic. Perhaps some real netting made of cloth would work better.
  19. Bill, You were the push I needed....I'll fill the rest of my hammock nets with folded hammocks. I really like the way you deck looks.
  20. 25.4 is the magic number
  21. I guess I'll make the hammocks to finish the whole ship.
