HIPEXEC got a reaction from Mr Whippy in My Process for Planking
    Hi Glenn,
I'm on my second ship and stumbled onto the method you just described. I started at the top and went down nine planks. Now, I'm starting on the bottom. So far full width planks have worked very nicely. I'll probably get upward of three planks when I will have to start the tedious job of tapering. It's great to read your process. It builds my confidence that I will wind up with nice planking.
    Thanks,

I finally got around to building an appropriate stand for my Conny. I had been using the one that came with the kit, but it's a puny 12" thing. Now my Conny rests an a proper 24" varnished stand!

  4. Thanks!

Finished another bank of hammocks. Now I have a regular hammock folding factory. Now I'm about 40% done.

Sjors, I do need any help and advise you care to give. You too Augie. I just put the transom on after using my Dremel to sand the correct angle. One of the balsa fillers they sent me with the kit was missing a critical section. I had to re-build it. Now I'll have to use filler and sanding to finish it.

The plastic mitre box is great. It gives me perfect cuts (if it can last).

HIPEXEC got a reaction from Mr Whippy in Soaking, bending, gluing planks
The harder the wood...the longer I soak them. My Constructo USS Constitution had Sapele planks 2mm x 6mm that always cracked when I bent them. I added Ammonia to the water and soaked them 20 - 30 minutes...then used a hot iron to start the bends and them put them on a net shape jig I built for myself out of 3/4 inch plywood and plastic wrapped nails. I used the cutout from my deck piece to trace the hull shape onto the plywood. Check out my build log for pics.  Even with all this....bending planks is a tedious time consuming task that is well rewarded with a smoothly planked hull. Read all the tutorials on this website and pick and chose the techniques that suit you. The best advise I got from a member is: treat each plank as if it is its own model. Each one has its own bend, taper and twist.
    Good Luck,
    Rich

Hi, I'm Phil.  I'm about ten months into my build.  I've never done a ship of the line before, so this is a learning experience.

I chose to build the HMS Victory because I wanted to do a ship of the line.

I bought it off of E-Bay on an auction.

The kit dates back from 1991.

I've had a few difficulties due to the age of the wood and my relative inexperience (compared to most of you guys) in wooden ship modelling.

I am very patient.  I am very stubborn.  I have lots of experience with other types of models to draw from.

I have finished the rough work on the hull.  Both layers of planking are on.  The stern and quarter galleries are built and painted.  I have the base color scheme painted on.  I am going to be coppering the bottom of the hull.  I have 3/16" copper tape, a pounce wheel and Gene Bodnar's article on making copper plates using self adhesive copper tape (thank you very much, Gene, for writing that, as well as the other articles that you have written), that I pulled off of this website.  I plan on making very good use of all three .

Here's where I'm at right now:

My Spray is finally finished. Engraved plaques and a print if Slocum reading in his cabin. The Spray is shown running before a storm with all sails furled except a storm jib. A sea anchor is deployed to keep its stern pointed into the sea and wind.

Now I have to make title plaques for the base then I'll see if any of the Slocum museums want this display model for their visitors. It's a perfect tool to show folks how Slocum lived for over three years while sailing alone.

From what I've seen of the speculations about what the Ark looked like, you could start with a shoe box or a length of 4x4. HiS models does make an Ark kit. Google Noah's Ark models and you will find examples.

The big mod was creating and building the water cannons. I had to research that a lot. Then I had to build the water cannon out of available components. Then I searched for NYFD decals and had the make sure they were the correct size . Mounting the decals was tricky on wood
Bur basically it’s your tugboat with some bells and whistles

This tugboat kit says it’s for less experienced builders. I’ve been building boats for years most of which  were plank on bulkhead or plank on frame period sailing ships. Two of my builds are now in museums, but I have to say I’ve had some challenging times building this tugboat. It’s not a walk in the park.
