marktiedens got a reaction from NMBROOK in Royal William by marktiedens - FINISHED - Euromodel - scale 1:72
Update - moving right along,I added some cat heads to the catheads . Then I added the staghorn cleats to the quarterdeck bulwarks. I am pretty sure the hull is now complete except for the stern lanterns, which will be installed later .

Hi Greg - I have taken a bit of a break due to catching a cold a couple of weeks ago & feeling lousy. I am much better now & should be up to speed soon. I have made a little progress on the bowsprit. The dowels were tapered & shaped according to the plans, then the top was cut from the supplied 1mm plywood & planked on both sides with a 1x3mm strip glued around the outside edge. The trestle trees & cross trees were then cut & shaped to fit & glued in place. The whole top assy. was then painted black. The chainplates were made by bending some .8mm brass wire around the deadeyes & soldered shut. The lower end was flattened in a vice & holes were drilled for nails. The design of the bowsprit is a little different than I have seen before - the top is offset to one side & the jibboom goes through the top rather than under it.

Excellent. It has always be my feeling that the easiest and quickest way to ruin this kind of ships, is paint it with shiny colors!!!

Howdy to all
as mentioned before I did not want to use the metal parts used as belaying cleats. So I asked Mr Mondfeldt - his book of course - what I could do better. I found a description of the "Kleines Kreuzholz" which is the same as this kind of belaying cleats.
I tried to carve them with basswood and I think the results are quite ok. The connection bar is from walnut. I made two sizes of the cleats (midship a little bigger, forecastle small).

marktiedens reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Thanks for the comments and the "likes".
Life and other things continues to take my shipyard time.....
So.. some replies first, update next.
Eric,
I was tech writer for 25 years in a previous life (the one before I went into IT work)... I still get caught on such stuff.
I did some manuals in my previous life for equipment used by the Brits. I had to learn a whole new language for them. I believe (and am probably wrong) that it was Winston Churchill who said "We're two countries, separated by a common language".
After sorting out how the deck was planked by referencing other French frigates as much as I could, used the cross-section drawing as my baseline. Licorne is definitely an oddball in this regard. The references show the traditional planking that follows the waterway and tapers. Some use nibbing at the bow, some use hook scarfs. Others... nada. Towards the stern... there's where I ran into headaches. Some use drop planks, some don't. Some have parquet floors in the great cabin. Some don't.
So.. decision time. I went with the spirit of the beast. No drop planks, no scarfs or nibbing at the bow, There's two wide planks thicker than the rest at the waterway.. much like binding strakes. Then theres 3 stakes of "normal planks", a very wide binding strake, and 5 "normal planks. None of the works showed hook scarfs in the binding strakes like the English used.. So.. I'm going with what I have.
I began by doing a reference drawing (actually reworking what I had done already) with actual dimensions to account for errors in building with respect to width of the area to be planked and beam placement. I then added tic marks along the centerline of each beam for the plankwidth starting at the 0 station line (dead flat, widest point) and scaled them to both the stern and the bow. Next came drawing in the planks. The cutting part was the easy part and am now installing the aft planking first.
The first picture shows the result of this work in the great cabin aft of the mizzen mast. The drawings and cuttings were tweaked to account for the kerf of the laser. Also, the planking that showing is actually the bottom side of the sheet. Given the way the kerf is, this provided a natural beveling. I lightly sanded the char but didn't remove all of it as a) there's little glue used on the edge of the plank and it gives a nice (to my eye) simulation of caulking. There's also another plank laying on the beams ready for installation.
The second photo merely shows the planks cut and still held in place in the sheet stock. These planks are from where the existing planking is to the waterway. I left a bit of extra meat on the outside plank goes by the waterway for fitting.
I'm having a lot of fun with this once I figure out what needs to be done. The "how" is just as important as the "what" in this case. Frustrating at times, but very satisfying when it comes together.
As always, feel free to point out errors, misadventures, etc. This is pretty much virgin territory for me...

Good Morning All, Thanks to all who have visited, for the likes and the gracious comments. Much appreciated.
Not a heck of a lot going on but having fun doing it, just a few pictures showing what';s going on:
The windless with it's poles(is there a proper name for these?)
The next few pictures are showing the process I used to make some demizanas
This one is showing the tools I used
This is showing what I have been mainly busy at this week, making shooter glasses. Normally I wouldn't show this but being we are drinking rum out of these so I thought it was a little nautical. It is a 60th birthday party with a Jamaican theme, hence the colors and Appeltons rum.
Here is the final demizanas, the small one still needs some refinement. They are about 30 and 10 mm tall.
And to end with, I have the port side deck rail installed and the top timbers re-installed. Now onto the starboard side
Thanks again for stopping in and have a Good One

Et voilà, c'est complété.
It was a nice week end project to build.
For the next build, knowing that the better the plans, the better are the chance to produce better results.
What are the better set of plans available on the market?
I guess I could build the same as the next project of a member of MSW.
There is also another important factor, the model must be nice to my eyes.

Hello friends,
Thank you all for the compliments and the likes and welcome to my build log.
@ Django - Santisima Trinidad is a fantastic looking ship when finished. Good choice.
@ Marcus - I think my Halve Mean is sitting on other people's mantelpiece (or maybe even in the mantelpiece )
@ Wayne - With popcorn you are allowed to make a little mess, as long as you clean up afterwards.
@ Hennie - Don't worry about Sjors' netting, it is still a work in progress. Three more to go. Oh, before I forget, I need netting to. Isn't that convenient.
@ Ulises - Yes, she is indeed a beauty. And to keep her beautiful, I decided not to use the bright colors OcCre used. I will use the Admiralty paints yellow ochre, red ochre, dull black and French blue.
And now it is time for an update. Enjoy.
The deck came in four parts. Glued two of the parts together and planked the starboard and port side separately.
The lined sections of the deck were glued onto the structure of the ship.
Reinforcing parts glued in place on each side of the false keel and on the bow frame.
Glued eleven gun ports to each side of the deck and started the lining onto the interior of the frames.
Thank you for watching.

marktiedens got a reaction from mtaylor in Ralt RA 5 Plank bender
I have one of those & it is great for plank bending. It was made by Aeropiccola, which is no longer in business. I wouldn`t give mine up for anything. As far as getting one, keep searching ebay or maybe a site called Craigslist. It`s a great tool - I sometimes wonder why no one has continued to make one like it. Maybe the patent for the design is still in effect.

What a beautiful ship. I have put my eyes over her several times, specially because her history is somewhat related to México.

Hi Anja,
Great that you started a new build(ingblog).
Poor Sjors, now his netting will never come to an end :D
Many years ago I also build a Spanish Gallion (1607). Just a plastic one, but oke...
I took a picture of it, but with the Agamemnon in the background, it looks a bit poor....
