Hi Mark, Napier also devised a way of spooling the thread.  It is a square board with a nail in each of the four corners around which he wrapped his thread.  It allowed him to immerse the thread in a pan of hot solution so the dye could reach all of the thread.     Duff

Hi Mark, fantastic work, very inspiring.

For rope dyeing, you might consider getting a copy of "Valkenisse" by Rob Napier.  On pages 156 to 158, he reports good results with Pro Chemical & Dye in Somerset, MA.  He also outlined his method.

BTW, his book is book is a treasure drove of tips and information. This is one of my 'go to' books.  Duff

You bring up some excellent points, Chris.

If the instructions are poor, come to NRG-MSW.

If you become bored or de-motivated with the model, sell it and get one that stirs your imagination and passion.

If the kit has poor materials, replace them with better.  If there are too many issues with materials, then scratch build it. You can use the bulkheads and keel and hopefully some of the fittings.  You can buy decent wood from Crown timber already milled to your specs and suppliers such as Bluejacket have lots of fittings.

And, you are quite right - us modelers are problem solvers.  We have to figure out how to hold parts, how to shape them using the tools we have, we decide the type of materials to use, the best glue and mechanical fasteners, the best finishes, etc etc.
You are the artist and crafter, so you decide how you want your model to look.                                                             Duff

All very good comments and suggestions.
I can not remember what got me started as it was a loooong time ago.  I do think about why it still holds my interest.  So here are a few more thoughts:
    1. this hobby of wooden ship building requires many skills - working with wood, metal, plastics, paints and glues.  So practicing the various skills and learning about the various skills and chemicals is challenging and rewarding.   It seems that there are so many skills sets to work on, such as carving cherubs.
    2. the process of building a model ship (wood or plastic) is a journey - one that has its own rewards.
    3. selecting a ship to model must have some meaning to you, whatever it is, such as your granddad or great uncle sailed on it, or you read a story about it that stirred your imagination.  If you have no passion for it, then you may never want to finish the build.
    4. and the ship of your choice must be fun to build.  (No one wants drudgery in their hobby.)

Keep building and above all, have fun~!                                Duff

A lathe is not required.  Decent spars can be made with a drill (corded or battery) and sand paper.              Duff

Nearly all of the foregoing are great/

For me. back in the 1960's, when I was a teenager and had already built the Revel Cutty Sark, Thermopoly and USF Constitution, I stumbled across a book in our local library - 'Ship Model Building' by E. Armitage McCann.  I keep a copy in my library (of 120 maritime books) because he grabbed my attention and moved me into scratch building.

Although his work is crude by today's standards, he captured my inspiration and kept me involved in model ship building.

So my point is to read widely, and fine what moves you.

Hi Jim, your Connie is looking great!

I think you're making the right choices and getting good input from this valuable website.

Just remember, you are making an illusion, so everything you make must 'look right'. just as you did with the coppering (and confirmed by others). Viewing distance lighting, choice of paint, fidelity to scale, and others all affect outcome.
    Nice job.                        Duff

Arrrhg me maties!  Have fun with your build, Kim, it is your ship.

Pirates would capture what ever ships they could and use them to capture more ships and booty.

I dare say we don't know about every ship ussd in piracy so use your imagination and enjoy the build.

Hi Kimberly, prior suggestions on paint are all good.  Be sure to wash off all release oils before painting (warm water and a little dish soap).
Should you have to remove dryed paint, dip the item into power steering fluid until the paint falls off.  Really.  The fluid does not harm the plastic but eats the paint.
As for straight edges when brushing or spraying, Tamyia sells a high quality masking tape. Blue painters tape should work too but may not sit down tight over raised detail as well.
    No dumb models.
    Have fun.

Richard Griffith got a reaction from jchbeiner in Stowing anchor rode in 18th C.
Hello Capt Al, you are right that the rope would not be stored in bilge water.  Preventing rot was a major effort on sailing ships. so the bosun had to do all he could to protect cables, sails and lines.

The Bounty had a ceiling (the planking that covered the frames on the inside of the hull) so nothing could be stored between the frames.  She was 230 tons burthen, 70' length of keel, 24' 4" breadth and 11' 4" depth of  hold.  She did not have an orlop deck but she did have platforms fore and aft and the midships was the hold.  Ships of this size were assigned 4 anchors: a bower, a sheet, a stream and a kedge.  The bower and sheet anchors for Bounty had 4" (circumference) cables, at least 2 maybe 3, of about 85 fathoms each which could be spliced together as needed. Smaller cables were supplied for the other 2 anchors.

The Bounty as outlined by John McCay in his AOS book does not show a cable tier or a manger which suggests to me that the cable would have been coiled on top of the barrels in the hold.  (Larger ships would have had cable tiers.........)    Hope this helps.
