    It doesn't have to be a big ship to cause havoc. In 1975 the 7,272 gross ton SS 'Lake Illawarra' brought down the Tasman Bridge over the Derwent River, near Hobart. Unfortunately, 7 of the crew and 5 people in cars on the bridge died. The Master was found to have not handled his ship in a proper and seamanlike manner! John SS Lake Illawarra The damaged bridge just after the collission. The headlights of two cars teetering on the edge can be seen.

    I've been fiddling with making 'raw' deck beams for the past couple of visits to the museum. The model will need to come home shortly to have some finish applied to the inside of the hull, but in the meantime, I can make the beams ready to start chopping some of them up where deck structures will intrude so that things can progress after the model comes home. This is how she looks at the moment with the beams so far made temporarily fitted in place. John

    You have the photographic proof that that's the way she was rigged, so go for it. As for the lack of shrouds on the mizzen mast, in his book "Grain race", Eric Newby describes his horror at having to 'shinny' up the stays of the topgallant masts as they had no ratlines, so evidently not an unusual thing. John
