    Jeff, spending the rest of your life tying little knots is one of the joys of rigging a large sailing ship! 
     
    Actually, clove hitches are very quick and easy to tie and will help your model to look really authentic.  Tension on the shrouds shouldn't be a problem as the ratlines are slightly slack and don't pull on the shrouds.

    That photo was taken from one of the boats.  The ship isn't moving very fast in the light breeze and if you look closely, you can see a line leading back from the whisker boom - no doubt a painter to make sure the boat didn't get left behind.

    Bruma, this link to a photo of the 'Cutty Sark' taken in Sydney during her working days may be of use to you. It's from a glass plate negative, so is very fine grained and can be enlarged quite a bit.
