cdogg got a reaction from Scottish Guy in For Beginners -- A Cautionary Tale
I have a theory that may apply to Chris's post. When I started building my first log, I came to conclusion that my boat will never look as good as most of the builds on this site no matter what I did at the time. This led me to find myself at times thinking, "If I do this, I'll never be able to post the pics on MSW". Now that I have four kits under my belt I feel a lot better about posting to build logs. Unfortunately I do not have the time these days like I did 4 years ago to work on my builds. My Scotland Kit is over two years old now, still trying to get one whole day to sit down and get going on it.
These people may have finished their boats but chose not to continue the log because they felt it wasn't good enough to share. Some of the people on this forum are 30 plus year veterans at this hobby and they make such beautiful ships that it may drive away novices from posting.
Who knows where these build logs have gone, just saying my theory could be valid along with people just losing interest.

cdogg got a reaction from DmitriyMarkov in Scotland 1775 by cdogg - Corel - 1:64 - Baltic Ketch
It's been a busy time of year, finally spent a few hours on the boat
Here I measured and placed the pin rack and the grating on the deck
The wonderful kit provided posts were too small for the 1.5x3mm walnut pin rack so I went to a 1mmx3mm walnut piece, worked fine
The grating was a pain in the a*s, first time making one, at least now I know how to do it correctly. lol

cdogg got a reaction from EricWilliamMarshall in Model Shipways Ropewalk
I just got this in the mail, I am 90% done with it and am going to start creating ropes tonight. Only problem is I have no idea what I am doing other than reading how to operate it via the instructions. Anyone have an advice or tips on rope making with this thing? Thanks! - Casey

Went out of town this weekend and picked this small kit up to kill some time. The rigging was a little tricky but this was fun.

Just so I understand, you put this on the rigging lines (PVA/Water/Soap) as well as the knots?
thanks

Did you start a build log? That is the best way to get help , take pictures of each step, people will help along the way, some members are more helpful with hull building, some with rigging, some with planking, etc

cdogg reacted to EJ_L in La Couronne by EJ_L - FINISHED - Corel - 1:100 - 1637 Version
Thank you to everyone for all the nice compliments and the likes! This has truly been a great build for me in it being both my largest and most complicated to date, (soon to be passed by Soleil Royal) and most importantly, the first to have been started and completed on this site. Like most of us I have been building models for a very long time but to be apart of such a great community to learn, grow and share with, has made it all the better. All of the encouragement, tips and just knowing that there are people who are interested in what is being built enriches the model to a point where it is not just a model, it has become a journey that plays out in these logs like a story for everyone to read and enjoy.
I am currently working on the rope coils and hope to have them done either tonight or tomorrow. Once they are all in place, I am hoping to take her outside where I can use the natural light to take some finished photos. Those pictures will be the last of the build updates on here.
Koen, please do use what you can to help your build! Let me know if you need any pictures or information and if I can, I will gladly help you out. Also, let me know when you get a log started as I would love to see another Couronne come together.
Don, thanks for the tip to clear the cache. Worked like a charm and I'm posting away again from my home computer.

cdogg got a reaction from Elijah in Mamoli model kits are back
Awesome news! Ala carte parts would be great, also maybe you could bring back the pre colored wood for the Golden Hind kit, they switched to cardboard. In any case thanks for saving the Mamoli Kit line!

cdogg got a reaction from vossiewulf in Airbrush
I bought a Master airbrush kit off Amazon a few years ago around $75, played around with the cheap airbrush until I knew what I was doing. Buying an airbrush is like buying a guitar. You don't know if you will enjoy it, so don't go an buy a $400 toy to sit in a closet.
Once I got the hang of airbrushing I moved to a more advanced "cheap" airbrush, a Master G233. As long as I keep it clean I can do decent work, here is a picture of a 1/72 Bf109 that I finished last October with the Master starter kit.
Not exactly museum quality, but proof that a starter kit can get you a decent paint job. This winter I will buying a badger brush or two for more detailed work.
Don't worry about all the complexities, just buy a starter kit and go from there.

cdogg reacted to Worldway in Mare Nostrum by Worldway - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - Scale 1:35 - Fishing Trawler - First Wooden Ship Build
So here it is. The final pictures of my Mare Nostrum. I finished tonight. However, there is one addition I want to make but the part hasn't come in yet so I won't close off the build quite yet. But for the most part, it's finished. It's not as detailed as it should have been but to me it's a good model. There were some discrepancies between the plans and the picture on the box. But I did what I thought was correct. The bench is now empty, waiting for the next build.

Moving and setting up is going well. The new shipyard is almost ready for work to resume with La Couronne in her place and the area for Soleil Royal ready to go. Still have a lot of work to do throughout the rest of the house and the wood shop is no where near ready but we are happily in the new house and hopefully in the next few days work can resume.

I use tanganyika on all mine, it looks great after a single coat of poly. But it is very brittle so make sure you have extra.

cdogg got a reaction from ggrieco in Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack by hexnut - Midwest Products - 1:24 - 1st wooden ship build
Great job on the computers shots! I always wondered how deep the fish hatches went. I know that in the kit the keel cuts right down the middle of the cockpit, I think reinforcing the sides with some wood to the keel will let you gut the top of the keel so you can make a open cockpit? I am working on the same boat right now, more or less learning as I go.
