    Hi Robbyn,

Your SF 11 looks really nice with sails. A little tip I read of many years ago re belaying. Pass the line to be belayed through the hole in the pinrail etc then push the belaying pin in the hole. It will hold the line secure while you put on your couple of figure of eight turns, nothing more annoying than losing your hold on the line and it unraveling and slacking off. Can´t be seen once you have put your rope hanks on,yeah,I know that´s cheating

    Regards,

Such a nice era, sail to steam, when they didn't trust the steam so they kept the sails.

    Hi All,

When the Hoga was at Pearl Harbor it was all painted a dark gray and the detail is hard to see.  I thought I should show you the hull before it gets painted.  I will be painting the hull dark gray but the decks and cabins will be a light gray so people will not have to strain their eyes.

Tom,    you have good eyes.  The hawse lips are wood.  I shaped the outside of the lip, glued it in place and then drilled the hole.  The anchor holes are the only ones that have a lip on the inside, at present.  After the outer lip was glued and the hole was drilled, I glued on the inner lip and then drilled through the hole from the outside.  Trying to make the completed lip before gluing it in place was impossible for me but gluing it to the bulwark first held it all together while drilling.

Piet, John, Popeye,  Thanks for looking in and cheering me on.

I don’t know but I wouldn’t call that update “small”.  I call it fine work.

    Got the yards shaped

Managed to get all the blocks attached to the yards...yowsa, I really need smaller fingers for this part

now working on serving the final two stays, then it is time to check the plans for any other items that go on the masts and yards before I attach the sails.

Omg, I can't believe I am talking about attaching the sails Wow, I think there really is an end...a part of me feels a bit sad, but more of me feels a sense of completion and is ready to move on and finish that little longboat so I can have a clear desk to begin the Syren...ugh plank bending is in my near future again

Thank you all for your kind comments, really appreciate it.

On this particular day I managed to make only the four needed shroud turnbuckles.  They are a little out of scale but don't tell anyone
I used some copper tubing and brass rod as shown in the photos below.  It doesn't seem like much but it was slow going and tedious work.  Yes, I should have used the smaller tubing and thinner brass rod but at the time I didn't realize it.  Oh well, next sloop model better.  So far no one has noticed except me and you wont tell

I used a small piece of copper tubing and filed some metal away to leave just a thin portion holding both ends.  Then i cut two small pieces of copper tubing to fit inside as a reducer and bend two eyebolts to fit inside the smaller reducer bushings.  All this will be soldered together to make one part.

This shows another position of the same parts.

This is the completed turnbuckle.  The US penny is 19 mm in diameter.

    Cheers,

Brian, the ambitious part is the scale; it's smaller than 1:96. At my age, I can't work on her too long before my hands start to shake. Fortunately, I didn't commit myself to a time schedule on this project, but I don't get paid until I deliver the goods!

Crackers, I've decided to employ the Cutty Sark kind of shroud set-up (no channels). My source, Harold Underhill, in his Masting and Rigging the Clipper Ship, plate 21, page 118 shows that wooden ships did indeed have deadeyes set up on the main rail; they're supported by chainplates which I've omitted. Furthermore, I'm trying not to alter the original model too much beyond what it was. I'm making a few small corrections here and there (I'll be adding ship's boats to the top of the house), but it's still folk art.

    Thank you very much, Hamilton.

Now here are some more pictures of the rig:

The rig is done now. At last there are some finishing touches in order. As you can see, all the belaying pins still need some rope coils.

well........let's see......hmmmm.   in your earlier post Mobbsie,  your spelling of  'lanteen spanker'  could lend a lot to the imagination.  since the  'head' is located at the bow of these ships.......that would make for some strange goings-on, for passing ships to observe

it is uncertain which end of a ship would go under first.......I guess it would depend where the damage was.  if the stern went first,  it would give you a  'head's up' that indeed,  you ARE sinking......and should the bow go under first,  well......I guess your going in  'head first'.   I actually think the head would be like a  'Bedae',  in a sense.   in early times,  modern products weren't invented.......so one must have had to rely on the ocean spray,  as the primary method of choice.  one thing that this ship doesn't have,  is grating at the bow...I haven't seen any in the pictures.......so that tends to make one wonder further.   so.......what do they do......hang over the sides of the bow?  it may be true.......since this practice has been carried on by high school students,  who wish to convey a message to other passing motorists.
I wish they had a Marty Feldman emoticon

........."your Egor?"       "no.........it's Igor.........is your name 'heir Fraunkenstien?"
    "no........it's Frankenstein."     "suit yourself...........I'm easy!"

anyway................it's all good Kester.......I'm sure some folks have wondered where that terminology came from.   bet it would be fifty lashes for the one who actually did it
"I swear........I didn't know!    I followed the signs!"  {several sailors hiding behind some cargo, snickering}  "I told 'em ta folla the signs!"  {the others start laughing}.

I know Andy.........I thought I had scurvy or something.   I got more laughs from the M&M and lobster boat builds.  I love levity....I got levity all through me......I gotta come up with another crazy build.   who could resist this famous line:

"you take the Blonde........I'll take the one in the turban!"

I never tire watching Mel Brooke's  movies    I do apologize myself........kind off went off the beaten path.   I am glad that no one brought any critters with them.......anything but that     movies,  music,  and bass guitar is good.....sports is not.......I'm not an athletic supporter.   I like anything Monty......but not a full monty........been a fan of the Python crew for ages

there........I think I muddied things up a bit ..........soon I'll have another update,  and all will be right with the world.

Larry........I didn't forget you!    thanks for the good word.......I haven't used that magnifyer much,  but on this build,  it has been nice to have.   just when you think you have all the blocks your going to need in place,  a few more are needed during the build.   it makes it real easy to see the holes i've had to drill.   get better my friend,  so you can put your back to work again.....I miss watching your progress
