albert reacted to ggrieco in Heroine 1838 by ggrieco - FINISHED - Scale 1:24 - Western River Steamboat as she appeared before hitting a snag in the Red River
Hello Everybody,
Sorry for the lull in posting, I'm still playing catch up on the second model and progress has slowed on the first. I've also been wiped out with Ragweed alergies for the last two weeks. I'd rather have the flu!
I was able to assemble the pilot house and notch the roof trusses in place.
Cathead, I wonder as well how the original was done. This method seems to work but it is only as guess. With the trusses notched in place, they seem very rigid although I wonder if I should have added two more vertical timbers midway between the center and the ends. I'm with you about the poor stewards that had to deal with the chamber pots.
Yes Kurt, I wish you could have been here as well. I'm also dissappointed that I will have to miss the NRG conference this year as well. I will miss seeing everybody.
WackoWolf, thanks for the comment, except for the ragweed, everthing is fine, just a little slow with Heroine 1. I think things will pick up this next week so I should have much more to post. I'll be taking a break from the Glass Wreck on the weekends so I should have some time for posting.
Steven, I wish I had the time to do a build log of Serce as well. The shape of the reconstruction has evolved a bit and we'd like to get the info out there. Maybe when the Heroines are done I can post what I have. I hope no one minds that I put up two photos of the model. I was a little light on Steamboat photos.
The pilot house. The four moulded panels were milled and the planking added. This is only a test fit. It will sit slightly higher when the hurricane deck is planked and canvassed.
Test fit of the roof trusses.
Two photos of the Serce Limani vessel (Glass Wreck) 11th Century Byzantine Merchant vessel. Possible preview for future Build log.

albert reacted to Modeler12 in USS Constitution by Modeler12 - Cross-Section - Bow Area
This gives me an idea where the side cut-out section will be.
Hopefully the pencil marks line up with what I have been saving along the inside. To machine part of the frames away is another challenge.
I just want to make sure some of the frames will show. But time will tell.
Now that I look at that picture, I am again surprised that the section I chose includes more than I had anticipated. The channel, for example, fits just inside the boundary and that means I can include all of the dead-eyes required for the fore-mast rigging.
Next comes the other side and the cut-outs for the canonades. Didn't I say that before?

albert reacted to AON in HMS Bellerophon 1786 by AON – scale 1:64 – 74-gun 3rd Rate Man of War - Arrogant-Class
Friday 07 OCT 2016
Made my very first frame today. Frame 28-Aft. A short frame that runs from the stern deadwood to the lower group of transom pieces.
Turned out better than I thought it would... but it is scrap. Everything is perfect except for the fit of the foot to the dead wood which you can see in the photos. The head mates perfectly. The thickness tapers perfectly. It is just the fit down below.
I can't even hide it under the keelson as it stops just before frame 28.
Let's see what I can manage the second time, eh?

Thanks for the comments, Alan and Steven, and to the others who clicked the 'like' button.
(Steven ~ I'm glad your jig works!)
Hammock cranes -- Part 3 - - - Poop deck starboard side.
Used the same jig as I did for the waist cranes but just had to fit another fence with a slot angled at around 87 degrees instead of the vertical slot. (Of course, just for added fun, none of the cranes here are the same dimensions as any of the others.) >>>
. . . with ropes fitted >>>
I made these cranes to the dimensions shown in the drawings and fitted them in the positions also shown in the drawings, but when I saw them on the ship I began to worry that the netting would interfere with the mizzen mast shrouds/lanyards. So I mocked-up a dummy mizzen mast, channel and shrouds to test if there would be any clearance between lanyards and hammock netting. It looks like there should be about 1mm to 2mm space so hopefully no fouling between these items.
In the hope that there WILL be clearance later, I went ahead and fitted the netting >>>
Starboard side nettings all in place >>>
. . . hammock cranes/netting - - - just parts 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 to go . . . . .

Thanks for looking Mike40.
I am still waiting to get into the winter months where I have control of my humidity levels to start framing again, as per Druxeys advice that he always does his framing during the winter.
