Well, some progress to report. The ensign staffs are done. They were made and tapered using the usual square to octagon to round method. The trucks plus a few inches below them are painted gold. I scored around each staff to act as a stop for the paint: it was too small to mask conventionally. For those wondering why the pace has slackened a bit, I've another project to announce shortly.

Happy Monday! I am now 130 hours into the Naiad. Not a lot of progress this week due to my building a fort in the backyard for my kids. But in keeping with my Monday posting, here is the view of the stern transoms and filler pieces. You will note that I have begun to carefully fair these sections. At this point, I am just trying to keep things at a pre-finished state, recognizing that the final sand and buffing will come much later in the build.

I feel that I have reached a point in the build where I know it will be successful. I say that cautiously, and what I am trying to say is that I can visualize the rest of the build as it should be. The stern and bow sections were especially tricky and despite this not being my first scratch project, I was still unsure as to how things should go.

In the final sanding, the foot of the cant frames will flow into the cut down of the beardning line for a scale 2".

Unfortunately my little camera does not have a macro feature
My darling wife was going to get her super dooper do-it-all camera but decided to try the camera on her new fangled do-it-all cell phone.
It is a sad day, her phone camera is better than what I am using.

Yesterday was a beautiful day in southern Ontario, ruined by spring time yard work and summer-izing the snow blower, taking up the yard furniture from the basement. Spent the afternoon flattening the staples.

Today I intended to blacken them as I read on Wikipedia that they were iron. The photo I posted earlier from HMS Invincible (1758) states they were copper as do a number of other sources. One other states they were iron unless the ship hull was copper sheathed in which case the staples were copper to avoid corrosion of the iron.

The entire fleet was not coppered until after 1781. In 1783 a mixture of copper-zinc was used to manufacture the hull bolts to avoid corrosion. HMS Bellerophon was ordered in January 1782 and launched October 1786.

I must decide, today, whether to blacken them regardless for aesthetics, or leave them to tarnish naturally over time as copper.

and that is only one of places where is jungle in yard. This Yuka stayed, because it is planted in top of old boiler, and limited to grow anywhere around

At the evening, we visited my father (90) still very connected with his excellent brain and with reality. Three generations ... My father, as specialized engineer was first person who ride first former Yougoslavia nuclear reactor in Vincha

Next is very old historical picture found in family archive, from opening of nuclear reactor, my father is sitting on a control desk, after him is President Tito with top-level leaders of Yugoslavia ( Aleksandar Rankovic, Edvard Kardelj, Mosha Piade, ...

Just to mention, my father is author of famous (in that time) "Mostar appeal" about prohibition of bombing nuclear plants, which later developed to international Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM). He had more than 150 scientific works in matter of nuclear energy, nuclear safety, and environment pollution protection. he is retired more than 25 years from now, and very very old

 But still live

 Nice family story

This week I finished up the plumbing, reach rods and the other bits that tie the engine to the main shaft. I decided to go with an oil finish for the wood and was able to oil the cylinder timbers, pittman and flywheel. It gets a little tight with all the machinery and I wanted to make sure I got everything before moving on. I'm leaving the throw-out bearings and bearing caps off until the upper works are a little farther along -- I may need to remove the paddlewheels temporarily.

Bronze cam frame bearings and caps added.

Cam rods in to determine the length of the reach rods.

 Reach rod handles.

Engine just about complete. The steam exhaust stack will be blackened. Next week, on to the boilers.

 Feedwater pump and pre-heater.

 Starboard side.

 Port side.

I did a lot of photos during work.
1st pfoto - test milling of pears
2nd photo shows error of combining parties in turn. I had to change machine coordinate search technique for more accurate processing

I finished production of Juno head figure for model Oliver Cromwell in scale of 1:48 from boxtree.

Technological chain of next - 3D model, then CNC milling, then hand finishing.

First time I tried 4-axis milling. It was harder than I thought, but I coped
