  1. Thanks Kester, that calms me down a lot.. yup, Margarine Plank will be put in place first.. Sorry Margin, Margin Plank!! .. I have a few different width wood strips here so that was indeed the plan should things go a little Pear Shaped (did I say 'Should Things..' I mean 'When Things..' ) Hey There Nils, thanks for dropping by and for the compliment, believe me they are appreciated! feel free to offer any advice or tips as you see fit ok. That goes for everyone remember ! All The Best Eamonn
  2. Thanks Bindy, Lawrence and welcome along Joe (you already know of my joy at seeing a Prince D.N. here ) Well I have the Joggling Pattern drawn up and fitted onto the deck (paper template type thingy) and the Deck Plank terminations (where they are cut into the Margin) match up with the Plank Butt Joints too II would imagine that the joggled planks have to end at a Deck Beam to enable them to be 'nailed' into it) Main worry now it slight inconsistencies in my plank widths (I notices slight differences when doing the hull planking.. it might not be much but it threw the symmetry out slightly!) Next Up.. Attempt to cut the Margin Plank using my Paper Template as a guide, each side will need to be broken up into around 3 separate sections due to the curves involved.... Tell me again why I decided to do this!! somebody !! Now as soon as I Pick Myself Up From Rocking Back And Forth Whimpering To Myself In A Corner I Can Begin.. .. before I begin though, 'is there one 'S' or two 'S's' in Therapy?' 3. Thanks Dee_Dee, I snapped the Bow Sprit off my Dad's Gaff Rigged boat many years ago putting her into a tight space 'Med Mooring' style, bit embarrassing, but I was only 16 ! that's my excuse anyhoo... it was definitely pivoting by the time I was finished with it ! Sail 'er Easy Eamonn
  4. Take care ok , you'll be back building again in no time Jan. All The Best Eamonn
  5. Hi Kevin, I was enjoying where you 'picked' an Admiral, Captain etc or Event relevant to the day and did a kind of mini Biography/Breakdown of them and so your Idea to pick one item from each day & linking it seems perfect. All The Best Eamonn
  6. Looks fantastic Gregor.. I've only just spotted the 2 carronades down aft ! .. nice addition ! All The Best Eamonn
  7. Have to agree with Grant above Nigel, always love reading your explanations. Keep them coming Bud.. All The Very Best Eamonn
  8. Hey There Mike.. thanks mate.. just don't look too close ok, preferably from across the room Eamonn
  9. Wonderful stuff as always Dee_Dee, could you elaborate on the Pivoting Bow Sprit.. haven't heard of that before ! (sounds like something from a modern ocean racer, with there adjustable stubby version of a bow sprit ) Agreed the MBLS looks like a sweet boat to sail, either with the authentic or the 'chopped down' version of rig! All The Very Best Eamonn BTW What's next for you?
  10. Never a worry Kester, didn't know there was a horse up there too, down aft yes! (was going to say 'Neigh' a worry.. Horse ...Neigh .. No.. just me then ) E
  11. I was kinda figuring it was to do with Nelson Sherbourne will look fantastic in front of it ! I think charts make a wonderful backdrop for model boats, the actual plans look great too if you can get them! Next stop is Fore Stays for you then ? All The Best Kester Eamonn
  12. Just read your fascinating piece Dee_Dee & Bob.. To have sailed a boat under (submarining) is definitely an indication of being over canvased for the conditions, especially if you run into the back of the 'next' wave, modern boats could handle that better (in the right hands) and would be an exhilarating ride.. but older craft especially work boats weren't built to be exhilarating but to be functional and safe when handled correctly. Photos #2 & #3 unfortunately show a work boat being used in a 'modern' racing boat sense.. ie fully canvased and tearing along.. you would get away with it up to a point , but cross that 'point' and you will have problems that even a hugely experienced sailor would struggle to rectify quickly. Dee_Dee take a look at your models bow section and see if there would be much 'Reserve Buoyancy' were she to be pressed down forward in a gust of wind and in a following sea due to being over canvased (MBLS's seem to have a narrow entry, which wouldn't like being pressed down I would think) Shame to think of those absolutely beautiful boats being ostracised due to possible ill handling. All the Very Best Eamonn
  13. Thanks for all the Likes and comments folks.. it really does help keep things rolling along ! Nigel, she has only had 1 coat of Red Ochre so far, I'll sand it back and re apply tomorrow hopefully.. yea Joggling don't know what came over me there, but I'll give it a whirl Nice Picture of Mordant in Latest Full Profile.. by the way, somehow a simple 'like' doesn't seem enough with work like that (early stages and all, she's gonna be a beut.) Hey There David fancy meeting you here hopefully you'll soon see what Joggeling & Margins are over here on The Ballier. Tim.. alas I can only take credit for popping the stand out of its surrounding frame as it is the supplied Kit Stand.. emmm, though I did glue it together Hey There Kester, Yup, the Ports will be getting the red look shortly, though am tempted to leave the outer hull planking edges natural (so there would be 1mm or so unpainted) not 100% sure yet, that's why I left them till last as it might not be possible, tis rather tight in there to say the least Sherbourne looked deadly over on Latest Full.. and yea, she is crying out for her Fore Stays are you going to exhibit her with the Map in the background, cos it looks flippin brilliant ! So Long Folks and Thanks for Popping by. Eamonn
  14. Stick with it Tim it'll be worth it , you'll see! I left the bulwark area of my Ballahoo 'natural' so took my time also, but I am painting the lower parts so wasn't too particular there (that said the end result looked the same.. go figure ) Sail 'er Easy Eamonn
  15. Hi All.. Just a quick Photo Update to catch things up .. Gun Ports are filed out properly (almost that is) bit more to go there as 2 on each side have to be cut to meet the Capping Rail, the Transom decoration is in place, and I.ve got the 1st coat on the bulwarks. More work required on the black paintwork (another coat) and remember it isn't finished at the lower part, I need to get the waterline in first ! Just about Deck Time Folks.. I've decided to give myself a load of work and go with Joggling the Deck planks into a Margin and all the fun that that involves (have to say I do like the effect !.. lets see if I'm still saying this later!! ) Ok Photo Time.. All The Best Folks Eamonn
  16. Coolness.. nice simple solution there Ollie, but check out how ropes would be coiled after being 'made off' around a cleat (just found a nice demonstration on You Tube here .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Brx_Swi9FiA ) This is a 'modernish' method but no doubt would be the same or similar in the past , Belaying Pins would be similar if not the same.. Worth looking into for authenticity . All The Best Mate Eamonn Hope the Link works
  17. The Sticky things look the Business Ollie.. ermmmm wots the big white thing on the stern though? (in the last photo) All The Best Eamonn BTW I'm happy to confirm through my vast knowledge of such things that the Tall Stick Thing is in fact a 'Mast', wait for a 2nd opinion though ok.. Place still looks way too clean bud..
  18. Brilliant update Mike, good to see this cracking boat again ! All The Very Best With The Knee ! Eamonn
  19. Thanks Jason & Nigel, I'm just going over to Caroline for a quick looksee.. I may be some time ! E Edit : Just back from Caroline, found some photos on or around page 13 , I have some square profile that would do that job Nigel, else I was going to do similar to what Jason mentioned with 2 or 3 x 1mm to represent the Waterway on top of the Margin Planks. Hmmmm will have to think about this guys... what does everyone else think? any suggestions.. ?remember Ballahoo is circa 1804 if that makes any difference. E
  20. Thanks Jason, Ah yes, The Passion Of St. Tibulus.. Classic !! I have begun the Inner Planking as I was going to do the Joggling Thing.. nothing like making it complicated eh? admittedly I was going to put a Spirketting around it too, you mentioned that this might not be appropriate, was it only done on larger boats? (hope not ) Thanks for stopping by bud. Eamonn
  21. Warning Extreme Peg & Clamp Photo Follows .. Viewer Discretion Is Advised.. First Strake done on both sides of Inner Bulwarks ! Woo Hoo.. All The Very Best Eamonn Photo Below !! Careful Now.. Down With That Sort Of Thing..
  22. Thanks Nigel & Lawrence for the encouraging posts, and to all the Likes. Am about to begin Planking the Insides of the Bulwarks now, remember there will shortly be Plank Joggling questions, so brace yourselves (I understand the principal and what needs to be done but are there any 'Do's & Don'ts' tips! ) Bye For Now Eamonn
