Alright, looks like the end of the Druid-X mast photo series (I think).  With the completion of the topgallant mast I believe this section is done.  I do not count the eventual sealing and painting.  I do not think

Now for a close-up of the topmast - topgallant junction.  Thought this was done awhile ago, but then I remembered the bolster.  Then I remembered the eye bolts, etc etc.  This is actually pretty small, this close up really brings out the details (ugly warts and all....).  Also a  retrospective of the topmast.

This has been a great learning adventure.   Oh, the fighting top is still in the raw - back to the workbench and at least one more set of pics......

Well of course I woke up at 3 in the morning with the realization I had skipped over the cheek blocks on the top mast.

Thanks everyone.  I never knew I would be spending this much time on the masts.  Lots of learning.

Going through my notes and looking forward I realized I had not accounted for the jeer slings yet.  I had already put on the drying strakes so I had to do some modifications to the as completed mast head.  I came up with a solution that I believe is workable:

The last (I think) requirement for the main mast itself was the iron hoops for the woolings.  I used pretty much the same method as I did for the mast head.  I did notice that as you wrap them around the mast sometimes they would not follow an even course, opting for climbing or descending the mast.  To avoid this I first wrapped painters tape around the mast at the point the hoops are required.  Once triple checked, the paper mast band was added pushed up against the tape.

It didn't take too long to get the rest of the hoops into place:

Over at the Plastic Modeling site, the was a Group Build to see if you can build a model in 48 hours.  I started this kit a 7pm on Friday this last week and completed it at 6pm on Sunday.  I thought it would be an easy kit,  WRONG!  Soft plastic masts, poor molding and hull fit, and the only use for the instructions was to be a drop cloth.  But that did not deter me.  I normally do not use kit masts, spars, or sails, but in the short time frame I punted and used everything from the kit.  I wish I hadn't because it made rigging an absolute bear.  But its finished.  Now I can actually say I finished a ship model this year, or in fact, this decade.

Thank you Mark.  I will definitely check into the Magnus hitch.   What I’m doing now is using a spacer made from a 4/5 card to locate the knots (see the first photo below).  I tie the knots on top of the spacer and adjust them up and down with tweezers if needed.  I check the shroud tension when the first half of the hitch is in place and redo it if I’m pulling the shroud.  The second photo below shows a rat line in progress with three shrouds tied. When I’m finished tying knots I pull the spacer out.  Make any adjustments pushing the knots with tweezers.  If everything looks good  I hit the knots  with a PVA and water mix.

I redid the first set because for me they were too loose.

kruginmi reacted to Mike Dowling in Santisima Trinidad Cross Section by Mike Dowling - FINISHED
    Hello folks',
No I have not been idle all summer but very slowly progressing with the OcCre version of the Santisima Trinidad cross section. I didn't start a build log so none of you will have been able to follow my progress. Part of my reason for this is that there is already a wonderful build log on this kit on msw already and it seemed silly just to duplicate everything.

It will not be a surprise to you that I am an OcCre kit fan and the quality of this kit was up to their usual standards. I can't complain about them, only my own mistakes and 'shortcuts'!!! although I have to say their instructions were not as good as other kits they make.

The reason I wanted to build this one was to practice and try to improve my rigging skills which I feel I have. My shrouds and deadeyes especially were much better than I had done before and most of the rigging I am pleased with. I know for the keen eyed that I did make one bilateral mistake and belayed a couple of ropes to the wrong places. By the time I noticed it was already too late to undo so I will live with it.

I think it is a strange thing to do in some ways - a cross section - and I wouldn't do another one because for all the effort involved it never was going to look complete in a way. I wouldn't even dream of doing the whole ship which OcCre also do as not only is it huge but I think I would lose patience with it quite fast.

Anyway, I will post some pictures of my efforts for you all to see and love or hate as you wish.

My next project is going to be my second stage coach which I know is not of interest on this site but, fear not, I shall be watching you !!!

I am thinking of doing the RMS Titanic afterwards !!!!!!!! Watch this space !
