Tigerdvr got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Confederacy by tigerdvr - Model Shipways - scale 1/64
Work on the gun deck continues. The last Limewood planks have been scarphed and laid. Lime wood was used more to gain experience with other than basswood. The Limewood is harder than bass but was a bit prone to splintering along the edges. My new MicroMake belt sander was used for some of the scarph shaping. The sander has worked quite well so far.
My right hand and wrist get sore quick using a twist drill. Too many hours teaching on the range I guess so I’m going to use the MicroMake high speed drill to do the treenail holes. The test strips have come out okay. The drill is variable speed through the power source and very controllable.
So next comes the sanding, treenails, eyebolts, Captain’s cabin flooring, and finishing. The deck will be kept light as the crew has been manning the holystones every morning before breakfast.
Cheers, Harley

Thanks everyone. Well, now I can say this project is really finished. Here she is in her new home.
I am really happy the way the case turned out. My full size woodworking skills leave a lot to be desired, but this project I tried to be a lot more precise.
One thing I did over the last few days was to remake the cradle. I had originally made it a few years ago using 3/16" walnut for the supports. In all the moving they suffered a few dings and breaks that looked terrible, so I took them off the base board and remade them in 1/4" walnut. I am much happier with the result.
That's it for this project. Thank you all who have followed along through the journey. I have certainly learned a lot and I much appreciate those of you who built this model before me so I could learn from your experiences. I also hope this build log will prove useful for those who build this model in the future. I would highly recommend the experience. Just make sure you have a big enough place to put it when finished.

Thanks guys
Of all the worries I had yesterday, damaged kits wasn't one of them. I was worried whether you guys would like the kit when you opened the box, never thought for a second they would arrive so beat up!
Also, it's mad that the US and Canadian guys receive their kits before the UK orders, I do not understand that!
I should be getting a quote for thick cardboard sleeves sometime today.
I did have some tiny boxes arrive today, for the figures, looks like these will be quite safe.
ETA - the Alert manual is a3 size, I chose this size because I knew I could just about fit the Alert 64th scale profiles on this size, so I could have everything, instruction and plans-wise all in one manual. Plus, I always hated how small the text kept getting in new kits, needing a microscope to read anything - I wanted to redress this...
Speedy will probably have an A4 manual and separate plan sheets for profiles and mast, yard and rigging, as that's a little bigger.

Trying to finish the rear compartment. It is by far the most difficult to realize and set in location. One of the reasons is that I am trying to make it more complicated than it was designed for. The second reason is that I am trying to power the shafts and allow the propellers to rotate. Finally, the capability to take apart and insert the starboard half-hull makes all the assembly very tight and delicate. A lot fo sanding has to take place to allow the insertion of the half-hull in the main hull.
I think that once I put together the entire rear compartment, I am going to glue it (with just a couple of points) to the main hull and get the shafts coupled permanently. It is necessary to file the main bulwark to allow the insertion of the cover-hull:
Lots of complexity for not much additional results. We will see how this goes.

Hello All,
I did quite a bit today for father's day. Spent most of the day in my man cave.
The only model kit that I can remember growing taller after each sub-assembly was a model of the Apollo Saturn V. This thing just gets taller and taller! It looks imposing. The pictures don't do it justice. Also, please forgive the lighting. Obviously I will get better pictures later on. Hope you like.

Update: Not a lot of progress but a very important discovery. I have been really bothered by the CA glue "frost". Especially on black. VERY unsightly. Even if you don't show any glue marks, that outgassing of the glue does. I started doing some touch up but had an idea. Here is a picture of the results and they are great! I sprayed some clear semi-gloss lacquer in some of the areas and it worked! The picture is of a really bad area and the most dramatic result.
BEFORE:
AFTER:
I should explain something. The first thing I did with the Pontos set, was wash it, de-grease it, and then spray it with clear lacquer, so spraying more on top of the "frost" must allow the coat underneath to kind of "swallow" the frost? I have no idea, but it makes a huge difference. I might just end up spraying a clear coat over most of the ship as I'm working.
Also tonight, I worked and finished the "starfish".

Please excuse this if it has been previously addressed, what adhesive and method of application are you using. Your work is truly outstanding
and sets a high level for us mere mortals to strive to emulate.
Thanks, Harley

Hi guys,
First thing I did was make sure the parts fit each funnel, which is why I'm surprised they didn't realize they had to also change the other parts of the assembly. I fell asleep thinking about scratch building and I have an idea.
Harley, I've always used Pacer Zap a Gap products. For some reason, it just doesn't seem to work as well for me anymore. Worst of all, is it loses its strength with time. If you glue your fingertips with a tiny drop from a fresh bottle, it's pretty hard to pull them apart. But from a year old bottle, no problem at all. I recently got some Gorilla Gel CA and it's almost all I'm using. Stuff is dangerous! Problem is, you have no time to fit the part. It bonds immediately on contact, so you have to have a steady hand. Removing something after it's bonded will usually destroy the part. The biggest drawback by far is the "frosting", especially since I'm gluing on black. The "frost" shows up like a sore thumb! I hate it. I'm going to have to figure out how to get rid of it.
Thank you again for all the encouragement.

Here are some pics of contents, the second pic shows all of the laser and PE sheets for Alert.
The laser has made some black marks on the acetate sheet, but this is just confined to the protective film, the actual parts are perfect.

I did lots of annealing in my days, but only with glass. I used to "make" laser tubes, that required some minor glass blowing and joining, and then annealing. Ahhh memories!

Salt, my friend, I think you just killed my hobby budget. My Commodore has been after me to do a "don't paint the PE" project for some time. She just saw your latest project which, if I may add, is outstanding. She really likes it and I'm getting that look. We all know what that look means🙄
Thanks for sharing your log

Great weathering job. Was she really that beat up? The B-24s must have gone after the paint factories while hitting the oil refineries.
Thanks for sharing your methods and techniques.
