You are doing excellent work! Am very impressed! Two things: First, omitting something that was actually on the ship for fear of hurting someone's feelings is, for lack of better words, is utterly ridiculous. If someone complains or is "insulted" or offended by such, then its their fault for clicking on the link in the first place. After all, the Bismark is a famous ship... Ok, enough ranting! It's just that things are getting out of hand a little. Second, if you are having a hard time finding PE for your model, why not scratch some stuff out of styrene? Evergreen makes a lot of different types - rod, tube, I-beam, etc. - and sheets in different sizes, thickness, etc. That's what I am having do for my Dad's carrier.

Your work is incredible and please don't remove because some may have thin skin!

Kevin;  Just stumbled upon your build, and it's looking great!  I must say, however, if you are creating a great and accurate model from history, as we all are, why omit the swastika?  The symbol itself has been around much longer than the third reich...  It's all a part of history.  If I were recreating a confederate warship from the 1800's I would include the confederate flag, for realism;  history should not be offensive, we should all educate ourselves and our children in order to prevent the terrible mistakes we've made in the past, and as model ship builders we should embrace the wonderful engineering and design that went into these magnificent vessels;  they all were created by great minds that, In My Humble Opinion, were horrified at how the war mongers ultimately used them to satisfy their own selfish agendas.

That being said, I look forward to your build;  I haven't done plastic since I was a kid, but this looks like a great kit, and It's tempting...

    Ahoy Kevin

I use 5 minute epoxy for most of my PE. Your parts will never pop off.  It can be thinned with Alcohol and applied similar to Thin cements using capillary action. Or it can be left on a part for a minute or two to "get tacky" before applying it to the model. Cleaning up any excess is also easy with alcohol.

Whatever you use be sure to scuff the PE

I found this nice set on micro carving tools, US made, great edge. Very handy on bow making slots in filler blocks for false knightheads. (is that right term?)

I got side tracked in "Bowsprint", that turned into a three night project! Very interesting attempting to get "true" hex, taper, flat and round all on one little 6" board! I bought a Cherry and one other 3/8' square 2' long to use instead of Bass. I find Bass too soft to work with because it is too easy to over sand or cut. I can see where a mill would really help!

Thinned epoxy did firm up Basswood nicely.

Replacement parts seem to be a slightly thicker and better plywood. After learning on first go this hull is shaping up nicely.

Not a Jim saw but seem ok for not so perfect work.

Ripped 1/8" Bass to 1/2" cut in 3 sanded to length and smooth. I bought bulk wood on sale a couple months ago just to have around. Finally needed it!

I also ripped some Rosewood to about 1/8". This saw is nice quite, handy for lite work but not really up to level to do major mill work. Maybe with different blade and insert mod it can do thinner rips. It was only $130 bucks and does basic stuff I need today, $600 for Jim saw is too much right now.

I changed my mind and am attempting to salvage current hull after encouragement from Rich and Danny. I did not like the Basswood single plank design, from past builds of airplanes and small boats I know Bass is very soft and does not hold edge. Using ¼” square to reinforce bulkheads in conjunction with my balsa filler for deck created a major sanding project. I was also very concerned with quality and precision of deck support. I also made mistakes on stern and had decided just to order new parts rather than take time to correct flaws. Last I used Howard Sicard’s website as reference and there got very good instruction on how to build stern. Above is 2am yesterday after 4 hours of sanding and adding sub-decking. My new Jim sander helps tons! Getting 100% true edge on filler blocks is great.

It was $179.00 with paint a couple days ago! I have 6 or 7 kits that were 80% off. Every now and then they discount so cheap I can not help myself!

CA is a bugger to work with. I use it only if nothing else does job. There are tips from Tower and a set spray that help. Every time I use it I swear never again. Epoxy is actually much more user friendly, the longer the cure time the better the bond, it can be thinned to use as paint as well. Ebony seems like a real bugger to work with, being a nut I will have to try it!
