BLACK VIKING reacted to Overworked724 in Sultana by Overworked724 (Patrick) – FINISHED - Model Shipways – Scale 1:64 – Solid Hull – First Wooden Model Ship
Sigh. Well...got a bit more done. The volutes are on! 😎 Not perfect, or especially pretty...but better than a sharp stick in the eye (as mom used to say...she was a charmer).
...also got the ring bolts (used thin wire...easy) on the cross planks which cover the loading hatch. (Sorry...I know these aren't the correct nautical terms but I'm tired!)
see below...moving on!

BLACK VIKING reacted to maaaslo in Hms Victory by maaaslo - DeAgostini/Modelspace
Hello, olla, ahoy friends and collegues.
i think the time just come, that even i create a thread with my work. Not that there is much to show, hehe...
i am building Hms victory, as title of the thread would also tell you.
by no means i build with much of, what you would call skill, its just mere attempt to finish off what i started as a slightly younger enthusiastic modeller with no clue.
i have already described my attempts at building this ship elswhere on this great forum. For those who did not catch it, it whas where i described it as a kit for learning (that for learning what i can and cannot do) and that it is sodomised. The latter i still stand for. In the pictures you will see, why i say so.
my appologies for the choice of surrounding for the pictures. My and the admiral we live in a small flat and i dont have a dedicated workshop.
for those building the same model, i am on issue 69, building and fitting out fore mast.
The gallery sits on slightly out of allignement. Nothing i can do now, and i have learned my lesson. Next one will be built a lot better.
You can see, i had to use a lot of filler. It does not bother me, first planking job. Because of that, i had to settle for painting, to cover the botched job.
Also, i dont think this was entirely my fault, but bow looks different to what it should. I have faired it to the point where all the planks were sitting flat. Maybe i over did it...
Main mast was done according to the instruction, which are btw very, very detailed. Just not correct. Very schematic and simplified.
Main yard. Instruction called for twisting the wire into coil and attach it to the yard. I hate the way it look and will re do it using just thread. Should i stiffen the thread using ca glue or pva?
I tried to imitate the cannon tackles. Looks so bad... good thing is it wont be visible. Those blocks are just way too big for the
scale.
Also, i have not had bees wax just yet, when i finished the railings, thats why the line looks so not hanging much...
I will take any criticism, altough its too late to fix much of it. For encouragement i thank you in advance.
next update will be after the finished fore mast fitting out.
one question: what kind of primer to use on hull? I know car primer, but which one?

Part 2 of attempting to build and install catharpin for the lower main. First attempt was wrong, and out of scale.
Referred to Anderson, but the jpg that B.E. sent made it much easier to understand.
Again B.E. thanks for always being kind enough to also let me know when I’m doing something really wrong – always appreciated indeed.
As mentioned in an earlier post this bit seems to be an English type of construction. Though it is installed on the Vasa 1/10th with this type of assembly.
Put a positioning cradle to help with the install, and secured it into position. Then laced the middle ropes - on each side - to allow for proper tension as well proper alignment.
Then removed the basswood cradle and attached the other eight lines.
I’m very happy with this extra detailing – It was a stretch but nice bit of learning.
I looked up the word cat-harpin, apparently, it is – of course- nautical in nature (any number of short ropes gathering in shrouds near their tops) - but the etymology is uncertain. Hmmm.
=================
Standing rigging is coming along – hope to attach bowsprit mast this coming week.
A few more detail shots of latest rigging work
As always – thanks for your kind words, likes, and dropping by.
Cheers,

BLACK VIKING reacted to Tallshiptragic in Sovereign of the Seas by Tallshiptragic - Sergal - 1/78
Thanks Hans, a few more details to add including the chocks on deck but once complete it should look the part.
I've finished the port central turret now, and have attached pics of the finished version and painted alongside the kit offering. Now only five to go. I've used the cupids from the kit for atop the central turret, though I may change this later. There are also two lanterns on the two astriding turrets on each quarter gallery. Though the kit versions are too large so these will definitely need replacing.

13: Quarter Deck and Waterways.
Need to close up the gap between quarter deck and the bulwark a bit, then the boat is ready for painting.

I think you have a fine looking project going there. I'd recommend the PVA for rigging if you have time to wait for drying. Gun rigging looks fine, I know what you mean about blocks too large. I need to see some pics of the real rigs to see what the proportions would be. Maybe you can go smaller on the upper ,more visible decks.

I must agree with Ulises I don't think that filler will fix that the best way to go is to buy a much simpler kit or do a part work with comprehensive instructions so you can cut your teeth on getting the hang of how these kits come together . Hope this helps

BLACK VIKING reacted to md1400cs in Wasa by md1400cs - FINISHED - Corel - 1:75
Hi Mates,
B.E. thank - made those just not installed -
Finished all of the ratlines,
Happy to leave clove hitches behind - Now continuing with the various needed stays. Started with the mizzen topgallant stay.
Needed a mouse – (according to Corel), then a double block is attached at the end of the stay – which then slips off to port and starboard main lower mast shrouds with four blocks. So served a line added a loop and then the mouse bit.
But then decided to look at the 1/10th Hmmm (not before ha ha)- NO it’s a double line from the top of the mizzen topgallant top. Grrrr
Then looked at the Billings sheets that Karl sent – seems to be missing altogether. I then reviewed his log and these are in fact on his build.
So the work bellow was a waste of time (though these “mouse” bits are getting easier (;-)
So back to square one with this bit.
PS: The mouse can’t be saved – I already had cut the rope – too short for the fore topgallant stay.
Cheers,

B.E.,
Thanks for your kind thoughts as well as your always very excellent advice.
Yes those blocks are indeed out of scale (and wrong). I woke up in the middle night, and my mind kept me awake thinking about how to do this correctly. I knew then that all of it was of the wrong scale.
I actually wanted to return to my earlier pleasant dream of living a Gauguin style of life in the South Pacific, but no! my head kept spinning around the catharpins rigging issue.
I don’t have access to your source. I did Google it, available reference, but not that specific page.
My Roth, Mondfeld, Mansis, and Peterson sources were to no avail either, Anderson being the only one. Yes, in fact a deadeye is called for. Staring at the 1/10th I kept seeing triple blocks then squinted and saw the correct deadeyes.
I’m determined to (after two work sessions) to see this detail through. As a rigging novice I was stymied.
I will follow Anderson’s procedure. I think that I understand this now – my working vocabulary is still limited Hmmm. Ironically enough his explanation and drawings are perfect – I just did not understand all of it. I will also use one continuous strand through the deadeyes to the shrouds.
B.E. thanks so much for still following along and always helping when you see something really wrong – so appreciated - As always,
Regards.
it at first read.

Popeye, thanks encouraging indeed. Yes exclusive of the hull and its details, the rest is indeed a bit of a mystery. Certainly of most ships up to the late 1600s. Then it got all more "modern" with plans and all that were repeated over and over again. Along with technical and operating improvements with each new build.
Dave - thanks as well. When I complete the rest of the standing rigging I will post some photos - I have a lot of evenings now totally open for seat-time. The Admiral knows that she cannot
"interfere" during Dodger games ha ha (I do, however, go into sports hibernation when Dodgers are off season - and wake back up in April each year) (:-)
Mates - as always thanks for dropping by - always appreciated !!
Cheers,

Looking forward to your build Hennie I built the Deag Sovereign a few years ago as I am really interested in 17c ships. On the go at the moment is the Vasa from Corel and the Solie Royal on the back burner so really interested in what you are going to do to her

10: Stem and "false keel"
Welp. This certainly was something. As other have noted with the new Mare Nostrum the stem doesn't actually fit at the top, extending too far ahead for the bulwark to connect. Deepening the front "socket" a bit and modifying the angle slightly allows the stem to fit to the rest of the boat and a short session with filler and sandpaper makes this change largely invisible. At least to me it does.

@Scott: thx
@Anton: thx Using fillers will be difficult because that gunport is in the way, but I wil try to put an extra frame (45 degrees angle) in it. At this point de Agostini did a better job.
