    Hola olliechristo,

I made the (AL) HMS Endeavour a couple of years ago and it is a good kit. As you already now there a lots of information about this bark and also many pictures of the replica, so you can do a great model.

I agree that your workmanship on the Cutter Mermaid indicates that you can build any model you set your eyes on.
As to what woods to use:  I like to avoid painting as much as possible to let the workmanship show through (even though my workmanship is not as good as yours).  So on my current build I chose boxwood, which is yellowish, and holly, which is white, to create a hull that has the same look as the recommended painted model.  If you want to go that way, look at the color of the original ship and choose woods that are (about) the same colors.  (On my next model I have to look into ebony to replace the black wales.)  If you like this idea, the Hobby Mill web site, "http://www.hobbymillusa.com/milled-wood-strips.php", has a great selection of different wood types.
    Just a thought.

Ok, repairs continue after the cat tipping incident. The back end of the bus! I have used Chuck's fantastic lantern kit. Next back to the front of the bus to fix up the anchors.

My model room can accommodate her, Mermaid under final rigging on right..

So i may start building a building board or slipway to help construction go straight and forward..

Hi everyone. Although I generally like to tread the less trodden path, I can't help but want to build the famous Endeavour.. I was born and live not far from Cooktown.. This is what ship came to mind at first, way back..  But i needed a warm up kit..

I wanted to scratch build without caring about time, but i no longer have a shed at home, and i want to complete this one in a matter of years not decades.. i also realised that severe kit bashing is almost scratch building anyway.

First I decided that this is the ship i want for my second build, this could be my last until i retire..  I heard that Artesania Latina's version of this ship has fairly accurate hull lines etc...

I am a bargain hunter and quite frankly I think most model ships are very expensive considering what is really provided.. And i will rebuild most of it anyway.. I just need all the vital parts..

So I found a ebay auction I liked the look of and won a shelved kit from the 80's I'm told...  ($160 incl postage from Florida) I was a little dubious about what it would look like in the flesh (my last cheap shelved kit wasn't much good)

I inspected it all today and all is well, all parts seem to be there, plastic still around planks etc...Impressed at the way its held up over the years of sitting.  And the original quality looks good.. Walnut dowells look good and other walnut profiles..

The saving i have made allows me to replace all the deck and hull veneers and replace any other fittings i like..

The FIRST question I had to answer..... Was the keel straight ?!?

Looks good, thank the lord of decent plywood, this is manufactured before laser wood cutting, most parts seem machined in some way..
I laid it down on a piece of glass and sits flat

I hope you all can help me with tips for wood that will suit best and learn a bunch more along the way. I hope to meet some new friends on the journey as well as the amazing folk from my HM Mermaid build..

It's a BIG model and it's going to be a BIGGGER journey!!       Ollie

olliechristo reacted to Modeler12 in what is the ideal modelling table?
Alas, I have to create saw dust in the same area where I do the ship rigging. But one thing I did right. I used part of sheet of 3/4 inch particle board covered with a white laminate for the table top. It gave me a really hard and flat surface and I can find little pieces real easily. In fact. I even painted the floor around the table white also.
Instead of an island, my main work area is a peninsula with lots of tool storage underneath (similar to what Remco showed above). This gives me access to at least three sides of the model and some place to put tools and supplies towards the wall on top of the workbench.
In a way I wished I had incorporated some kind of 'Lazy Susan', or turn table, because I have turned the model around soooo many times during the rigging. But then again, I use this space for other projects that are more 'rigid'. Meanwhile I just have to continue turning the base and duck every time it comes around.

Be sure to add plenty drawers, big ones for drawings, shallow ones for tools. If space isn't an issue make more that you think you'll need and you'll probably end up with just enough

And check the thread with all the members's workshops, you catch some ideas there too.

I have to go along with Jud ....... make it a walk around bench.  But I have seen some 'lazy susan' arrangements here on MSW.  The problem with a walk-around (I have one) is that the plans are up on the wall but some feet away.  Vacuum line is a great idea.

Forget the swivel top, walk around it instead. If you tilt the top, which may be handy,  you will need a separate  tool table on wheels so you can easily take it with you as you travel around the main table, might put some sort of a fold down seat on the tool table that allows sitting at the required height. If you have air, run a line in there with your overhead wiring, lights and vacuum, all offset from the table at one place, close but clear of the table. That should be enough to cause you to rub a bald spot in your hair.

    Hi All..

Another Photo Update..   all go in the Ballahoo camp eh?

I gave the Hook Scarf a few go's with limited success (I'm afraid my measurements aren't up to scratch Nigel, I'll try harder next build !  ) some of them can be seen on the deck, in fact all of them are on the deck (being used as scrap timber to keep the deck planking tight  ) have to say they looked rather well right up to the point where I put them together...  so I just used a regular Scarf instead, never thought I'd be relieved to be doing a plain scarf join!!
I've noticed about 1mm of asymmetry creeping into the deck planking which I'll address tomorrow by running a slightly narrower plank on one side.. this is rather annoying but I have come to expect it and will deal with it easily enough (Hopefully that is)

    Ok tis Photo Time..

I think your model is a really good piece of work.
One question, is the model painted on one side (starboard) or does it just look that way in the photos?
Personally, I like the natural look better.
    Great job.

Leanne,, I"m glad i can return something, for all the help i have had is what has made this build what it is.. The whole MSW forum is a godsend..

I look forward to seeing your build log surface

John thanks for the compliments, i have a tendency towards wanting perfection, which can be a downfall at times, i came to the conclusion that ratlines were probably not perfect anyway..

Anyway the second time they have come up neater, although i did redo a few to get it right, too much sag on some.. also had a flame up and two rungs burnt out that was exciting/scary..  one has gotta be quick with the flame if burning fuzz..

When i stand back and look at it all, the ratlines and shrouds are really making it look close to done..      Onto back stays next..  steady as she goes, as i want to soak up the last parts of this marvelous journey..   Ollie

olliechristo reacted to shipaholic in HMB Endeavour by shipaholic - FINISHED - Eaglemoss - 1/51
I have been building this since the start of 2011, here is a re-post of some of my progress pics. For those who didn't follow my log on the old website, this build is using wood from Eaglemoss partwork (same as the Occre kit), it has some nice fittings, such as the stern decorations but most of the parts and materials supplied are not accurate so a lot of this ship is being scratch built and I am using a lot of parts and materials bought separately. I have already built the Artesania Latina Endeavour a long time ago, and I wanted to build a 1:48 one. This kit was advertised as 1:48 but when you measure it up it is actually 1:51. I think this kit has used K.H Marquardt's Anatomy Of The Ship - Endeavour as a reference in its design. I am using the original 1768 draughts and quite a few other references instead of relying on just the AOTS as being "gospel" because I believe the AOTS is just one person's expert opinion on what the Endeavour could have looked like and it disagrees in some aspects with many of the other reference sources. There are two 1768 draughts, one dated April 1768 (3814) and one dated July 1768 (3814c) and they are different. The July one (which is the one most often referred to) looks like the date was added later, and could be a draught drawn when she was refitted AFTER Cook's voyage. If someone can clarify this point please do. The reason I am using the below draught (3814) is that the position and number of quarter deck rail stanchions match up with Sydney Parkinson's sketch showing the stern of Endeavour, whereas the other draught (3814c) does not.
Anyway here are some of the more recent pics plus some old ones
