Aerosol paints
Q A's Revenge replied to Q A's Revenge's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Hhm, you've got me thinking now John. I have an empty 7 litre scuba cylinder and also an empty CO2 extinguisher bottle, perhaps these could be charged from my compressor? I wonder how long it would run an airbrush? -
Aerosol paints
Q A's Revenge replied to Q A's Revenge's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Thanks for that John, I'll bear that in mind. I already have a 2.5 HP compressor but it's far too noisy to use for paint spraying really! -
Edge bending certainly seems to have worked well for you Bob!

Just looked at this thread again and have to say your planking is a tutorial in itself, really excellent work Bob. Thanks so much for posting and with such clear pictures.

Kit difficulty rating??? (Moved by moderator)
Q A's Revenge replied to Q A's Revenge's topic in Wood ship model kits
There's a model shop a few miles from me so I think I'll go along and ask to have a look inside the box of one of them, probably Ranger or Rainbow. -
Why do you think this plank on frame Endeavor kit is only 2 star. http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/amati_endeavour10.html Whilst this resin hull Endeavor is three star. http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/amati_endeavour50.html Must say I'm quite confused! Especially as I've slowly been coming round to the idea that perhaps a resin hull would be better for a first build as it's easier! Any thoughts much appreciated. I should add that whilst I like the look of the Endeavor there are other resin hull Yachts that are only two star... http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/amati_rainbow2.html http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/amati_enterprise.html

I don't know if it's possible with sail material but I saw some impressive needlework at an exhibition the other day where selective threads were removed. As I say, not sure if it can be done but if so may look good?

Given how cheap they are these days there's no reason not to have a pair - I have three of them! They used to be very much more expensive though. My best pair is made by Mitutoyo and retailed at £160 when I got them many years ago.

Sanding Block
Q A's Revenge replied to Hexomega's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Double sided tape is handy stuff to have around and can be used to fix sandpaper to any small bits of wood you have to hand to make sanding blocks. -
sharpening blades
Q A's Revenge replied to gulfmedic1's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Not tried it myself on craft knives but you should be able to maintain an edge for a while with stropping. All you need is a small piece of leather stuck to a piece of wood and some fine abrasive paste. Some folks use Autosol. http://www.thepolishingshop.co.uk/acatalog/Metal_Polish.html Another is the blue stuff on this page. http://www.thepolishingshop.co.uk/acatalog/Polishing_Compounds_180gm_Half_Round_Bar.html -
Looking good so far Mike. I've long admired this model so nice to see a build log of one. Out of interest, do you know why they chose to make the model triple planked?

Been six months I know but any updates on this? The St Roch is on my short list! Update: Just had a look at the plans and F100 are the lights and it lists only two which is correct, one port and one starboard. F113 are vents but can't see where they are fitted. I think blocks below decks is a good idea for the masts. Second update! Just looked at photo's of the original and there IS a third (white) light pictured but not sure Billings mention this?!!!

Looking good Sarge. I noticed this kit being sold by several shops. In the description it says: "The kit has been carefully engineered to provide hours of modeling enjoyment. It includes precut keel and frames; internal planking in hardwwood strips; external precut and preformed planking; all the accessories in wood, metal and resin, mast; building instructions and plans. " What do they mean by "precut and preformed planking" or is this a typo?

Thanks for that Wayne. I'll add it to the list of possibles. Everything I like the look of at the moment is a bit ambitious or not available in the UK!
