As "Newsboy" is currently in storage awaiting my time to set masts and rig her, I have added a few summary pictures.  Thank you for your interest.

After a debate with myself as to whether or not to add the cabin details I decided I would.  So here’s a start on the cabin.  I’m building it as a separate unit.  I plan to put a stove in the recess on the port and a sink in the shelf on the starboard.  Now that I’ve told everyone I stand a better chance of doing it.

I have not posted for a while but I have been working.  I constructed the railing around the hull.  That was more of a task that I expected, but I am reasonably satisfied with the results.  I also put in time making lots of little fittings.  The fittings for the bow spirit a real challenge.   Plenty of little tiny pieces of brass hit the workshop floor as I screwed up several versions before I made acceptable pieces.  Same can be said for the pumps.  I am getting practice on my brass and solder skills.....which did not exist several weeks ago.  I kind of like the looks of my fresh water barrel.  Finally, I tapered the main mast and have it positioned in the hull.  It has not been permanently attached.  I guess the next project will be the push boat and fittings.

I have been away for a while.  Had to have a bit of surgery and that threw me behind at work.  I was able to continue working on the Willie, but did not take as many pictures of the progress as I should have.  I am enclosing a few pictures of the model which I have moved out of the workshop and into the house.

This was one of the most difficult modeling projects I have done.  The basic building of the hull, masts, etc. was not too difficult but working with the brass parts and the rigging, etc. I found to be very difficult.  While you get a lot of help by looking at the other builder's; you can also find the quality of their work somewhat intimidating.  Some of the other builders of the Willie are awesome.

Well I hope you find my build adequate.  I really enjoyed the Willie and recommend it as a first build......it has a bit of everything.  I will be starting a new build soon.....just purchased the Sanson.

Good bit of progress today despite being slightly hungover from last nights work Christmas party.

Managed to complete and install the foremast gaff. Spent a while shaping walnut dowel to fit one of the gaff jaws and tapering to 2.5mm. Glued the gaff to the jaws piece and pinned in place to add strength. Cut three strips of black paper about 1mm wide and added to the gaff to simulate iron bands. Finally drilled a hole to take an eyepin once it has been stropped to a block.

Made up the rest of the rigging gradually over the afternoon and fitted to the gaff, including the parral beads at the back to fit to the foremast. Gradually iterated the rigging tension until the gaff was in the correct position and all lines were correctly tensioned. Belayed all four lines to belaying pins and painted with dilute PVA to fix in place.

Currently putting some coils together to finish.

Some good progress on deck planking last night.

I'm using 120mm deck planks, sanded to size and to give a smooth finish, then a coat of satin varnish is applied to the edges and allowed to dry before using a sharpie to colour the edges black to simulate caulking.

I've started with the centre line of the deck and gradually working my way out towards the margin planks. The margins are not yet glued in place as I want to be able to cut the nibbles and 'caulk' the margins outside of the ship before fixing in place.

Made a start on nibbling the foremost margin plank on the starboard side. Using test deck planks for the moment, but got the first three nibbles cut in place. Used a heavy duty x-acto blade and VERY carefully cut the nibble. I used the test planks to mark the two points at which the deck plank 'intercepts' the margin to mark out the size of cuts to make. The test planks were then shaped to fit for a final check on the shape. Minor adjustments made using a needle file.

Happy so far with the process but it is quite stressful the more nibbles are cut as there is more work to lose if an error is made. If in doubt, cut less and then file to shape.....!

Once all the nibbles are finalised for each margin plank, it will be varnished, 'caulked' and glued in place. The proper deck pieces can then be cut to fit and glued in.

    Hello Gaetan.

    This is not exactly true.

Elsberry is in Germany also Swiss-pear tree named.

It was a Company that made wood ship model kit probably in the late sixties and seventies years.
So consider that the level of the kit can be disappointing for a new modeller, since are absent the laser pre-cut components and sometimes the metal cast accessories.
In addition, the wood will be very old.
The Companies: Augusto Carta, Tris Model, Aeropiccola has ceased to exist since many years.
They belong to the "pioneer period" of the wood kit models.
When those above Companies closed, some of their projects were purchased and used by Mantua and Corel, too (and upgraded).

Thanks Tom for looking at my Longboat.  I would like to see a picture of your Pinnance with the stand.

I completed the forward platform using the method that BobF used on his Longboat and here is a picture of what I have completed.

The forward platform is made of boxwood that I purchased from Jeff Hayes at HobbyMill.  I am going to miss Jeff when he retires and closes his business as his wood makes my work look much better than if I had used the kit supplied wood.  Here is a closer look of the forward platform.

I am working on the rear platform and will post pictures when I finish that part.

    Hey Andy,

Here are some photos of my WVH as she stands today - I built her between 2002-2005 using mostly kit parts - single planked with the walnut wood provided.  I followed Corel directions as to where and how to start your planking run.  It turns out well - - as you can see the wales are placed on top of the planking after she's fully planked -which is not correct. You see a lot of kit models constructed this way - because its easier. Wales go on first to determine your planking run - then you plank from there.  If you want to paint your hull off white though - you can cover up the inaccurate run if you choose to follow the instructions.

I also attached some photos of the main deck - I milled my own holly for deck planking and tried to do a cut away to show the lower gun deck - which at the time seemed like a good idea - but now looks wrong to me - there would have been a few more beams here.  I also scratched my own gun carriages - because the ones in my kit were metal - i understand they have replaced these in newer kits.

The good news is I did a lot of research - Corel's plans are strong. I did some research secondary sources and the other sheets of plans I ordered to research the WPV. Some things are simplified - but overall Corel did a nice job.

Look forward to seeing your progress,
    Chris
